Cafe in the V&A museum, queued up to order two toasties, a coffee and a no alcohol beer. 36 quid. they had added a 10% service charge! I queried it and it was immediately removed so I guess they are chancing their arm!

I once, back in 2009 (!!), had 2 double Smirnoff Vanilla and sodas at LAX. Do you know how much it cost me? $40. $20 each for a mixed drink and this was almost 20 years ago. LAX is such a complete third world shithole that I literally didn’t care and just needed a drink to get through my layover.

There is table service, and the request for a gratuity is at the card reader at the bar. I refused every time as I always do.

I was recently in the US and they prompt to tip on self service order machines. So you stand at the touch screen, order it all and they want a tip. A tip for what!!? I did it all!

Completely agree. Will happily tip for good service over the course of an evening or during a meal. Will not tip 12.5% for someone pouring a drink in a bar! Ridiculous.

I've never understood tipping, I do it often, but it doesn't make sense - I can't access my own food and drink in an estabishment, someone has to prepare it and bring it to me, so why wouldn't that be included in the price? I was so glad after covid that so many places went to a payment structure that wouldn't allow them to adjust the bill to add a tip. I don't carry cash, so this feels like a more upfront transaction, they charge what they need to to pay for staff to do the work of the establishment.

I think your point is about the outrageous cost of the 2 drinks, and then asking for a tip or charity donation in addition to that. I agree with you, that's crazy. It's similar to the pricing of properties - the value of a home is wholly dependent on what a person is willing to pay.

The only way that I’d pay that much for a drink is if I had a flight delay! Alcohol definitely makes delays more bearable and it would be money well spent!

Seems steep to me, I “only” paid £7 for cider at a concert last week, and that was a proper venue, a pub even at the airport shouldn’t be more. Unless of course it’s fancy vodka
