Big boss is away on a very fancy sailing holiday

We work for a school trust. The CEO is on her holidays, a very luxury sailing trip in some beautiful places, good for her, but for some reason she's sending regular photos to our work WhatsApp group, the one that's generally only used to wish people Happy Birthday, warn about traffic issues on the route in or say welcome/goodbye when people come and go.

No one else has shared holiday pics all summer. The first message said somehting like for those who can't wait until we get back...

Is is me or is this very odd and quite tone deaf?

Tone deaf in what way?

If people are using the group to say Happy Birthday, I don't see why she can't put holiday snaps up.

Does no-one else get annual leave, is that what you mean by tone deaf?

Anyone who rises to the dizzy heights of Academy CEO is unlikely to have a social conscious. And that can extrapolate out to interpersonal social awareness. She is proving true to type.

The holiday will have cost some of the staffs' entire salary.

I think if you’re envious it’s better to maybe mute the chat if you can.

Oh, in that case then no.

She's allowed to be a high earning successful woman.

We're not all the same as each other so therefore our holidays won't be either.

I earn a fairly low wage and thankfully it's never stopped me being pleased for others.

No I'm not envious, I've done that kind of holiday and wouldn't do it again, but I wonder how some of the low paid admin staff I manage are feeling ahead of their return to work.

So a caravan in Skeggy would've been fine?

Why have a downer on a successful woman who earns more than you?

I think you're doing your colleagues a disservice if you think they're all eaten up with envy.

Bluenotgreen · Yesterday 12:54

You are coming across as envious of this woman. Just ignore it and mind your own business.

Whatmesurelynot · Yesterday 12:54

Possibly because some of the teachers and TAs will have paid for stuff for the kids out of their own money. The TAs will beon minimum wage whilst being expected to regularly go above and beyond. Fine if it feels like everone isin it together not good when it becomes very apparent thst they aren't.

If she's never done it before I would wonder if she'd got onto the wrong group and not noticed!
Or maybe someone has said that it would be great to see the photos and could she put them on there.

However it doesn't bother me. I have the sort of holidays I like and quite like seeing other places by photos.

Yes, I think I'd assume it was a mistake, or that someone had asked to see them. It wouldn't bother me in the least either way. Anyone who is finding it bothersome can mute the group for the duration.

But none of this means the OP can assume they can't be happy for people with more money and success?

Earning a lower wage doesn't automatically turn people into bitter people.

Well no but your boss? Bit different than a friend I think it shows poor judgement from big boss.

bababamama · Yesterday 13:05

I’m guessing she is not travelling alone, perhaps her partner paid even! I take expensive trips compared to my volunteers but they like an old school slide show (via the modern medium of PowerPoint) when I get back, they know I work hard and my dh pays!

Poor judgement why?

Because she's chosen different jobs to them, earns more money and therefore has different holidays?

Goodmorningeveryone26 · Yesterday 13:11

I think everyone is being a bit obtuse, OP. I can see your point

landmarkyear · Yesterday 13:12

I would think this odd too. Not just for her, but for any of the group to share holiday pics to a work WhatsApp. A degree of professional distinction between private and work related messages is usually required for work WhatsApps, in my experience. A message of ‘I’m off on holiday on this date and back on x’ should suffice.
I would just ignore them and hope she doesn’t post any more of them.

The OP shouldn't be getting upset or offended on behalf of other people who might possibly respond negatively to the holiday photos, though.

Oh please can you really not understand why its a bit off. If nothing else flaunting what you have to others who have less is crass. I would feel completely differently if it was a business owner or someone working in business, but in teaching everyone knows teachers are spending their own money to buy classroom supplies. The CEO could do this and save the teachers having to but I would lay money she doesn't she spends it on holidays instead.

LlynTegid · Yesterday 13:16

Holiday photos should be when you are back home. Not giving burglars an invitation. Or someone on the staff with a grudge.

So you’re worrried about the low paid staff and you personalky can afford these luxury trips.

sure,

NeverDropYourMooncup · Yesterday 13:19

Sounds like she hasn't got anybody to share it with IRL and can't distinguish between work/personal. It's sad when somebody's entire identity is dependent upon their job to that extent.

Oh, well.

But why is it 'flaunting' rather than showing holiday snaps?

Would photos of a caravan in Skegness be 'flaunting' or just showing holiday snaps?

The fact is most people's holidays are relevant to their earnings, and this woman is allowed to earn more than others and spend accordingly.

If the OP has a problem with that, it's her problem.

I think it sounds quite boastful.,, especially since it’s not usually a channel for holiday photos

BatildaB · Yesterday 13:22

Yes it’s weird. And it’s weird that anyone thinks it’s not weird!
