What did you do with your engagement ring after divorce?

For anyone who got divorced, what did you do with your engagement ring?

Mine wasn't the most expensive thing in the world but still, it's platinum with a diamond. It seems crazy to keep it (plus, it could look sentimental when it's not) but also somehow it seems mercenary to sell. But I've been divorced for 4 years now, separated for 9.

Is it common to sell it, maybe put the money into a S&S ISA for DC, or something?

Mine wasn't worth that much so I still have it. One of the kids might want it.

I got divorced in 2001, my engagement, wedding and eternity rings are still in my jewellery box.
I took them off when I left my ex but never bothered to do anything with them.

GarlicAnything · 26/08/2026 13:25

Sold it, and the wedding ring. Got a disappointing price but I was skint.

I offered all of the jewellery my exh gave me to our DD. She didn't want it as yellow gold. I gave engagement ring to one nice r, eternity ring to another niece, diamond on chain necklace to a great niece. Various rings and bracelets shared between nieces and great nieces. I threw wedding ring into sea from high cliff he proposed to me. It made me feel good to do so.

TheDogsMother · 26/08/2026 13:33

Traded it in with a Hatton Garden jeweller along with our previous wedding rings. The value went towards new rings to be made for me and now DH

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/08/2026 13:43

Still got it somewhere, and wear it occasionally on my right hand.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 26/08/2026 13:46

I sold mine to pay towards my legal fees, as exH dragged everything out and refused to agree to anything, forcing me to go to court right up to a final hearing. I liked it but wouldn't have worn it anyway as I don't want to be reminded of the twat.

Mycatmax · 26/08/2026 13:46

Sold it

Gazelda · 26/08/2026 13:47

I’ve still got mine in jewellery box. It’s never worn. 30+ years ago

We didn’t have DC together but I’ve since had a DD with second DH. I can’t imagine she will want it so I’ll probably sell it at some point. Or get it made into something else.

calbum · 26/08/2026 13:47

I put mine in the bin along with the wedding ring long before divorce.

Yesiamstressedactually · 26/08/2026 13:48

Threw both engagement and wedding rings in the sea!

Doggymummar · 26/08/2026 13:48

I'm three times divorced and they are in my jewellery box

Justtobeclear · 26/08/2026 13:49

I sold mine and used the money (not much!) for a bottle of champagne & drinks for the few friends who were rocks and me to share on a night out once the absolute came through. The marriage ended badly and they felt like bad luck so it was therapeutic to get rid of them.

GreenFootstool · 26/08/2026 13:51

I'm not able to join the conversation from experience, but have any of you who've kept them considered having them remade? Whether into another ring or a different piece of jewellery altogether.

It's surprisingly inexpensive because you're only paying for the jewellers time rather than all the materials from scratch.

Especially if you have lots of unworn pieces sitting about.

PermanentTemporary · 26/08/2026 13:51

First engagement ring: had it resized so I could wear it on another finger. It wasn’t a typical engagement stone so that helped.

Second ring: after being widowed I had it reset into a pendant. Luckily I had a nice chain to wear it on which kept the cost down, but it did cost quite a bit to have it done.

My ‘widowed’ wedding ring was melted down with my DP’s first ring and they’ve been remade into new rings for us.

Mooselooseinmyhoose · 26/08/2026 13:51

Tried to sell mine but despite having a 5k value for insurance purposes was offered 150 quid for it! Went to multiple jewellers, was only offered the weight of the metal (platinum).

I decided to keep it rather than get a tiny amount for it. I'll give it to my kids one day.

DisforDarkChocolate · 26/08/2026 13:52

Left it behind, I didn't want or need it.

DearlyDiego · 26/08/2026 13:53

I used the gold when I got other bits of jewellery altered/made. The stones just went to the cost of the custom job I engaged the jeweller to do.

I looked into selling it but I was only offered scrap value; I got more bang for my buck by it using it the way I did.

Second hand jewellery, unless particularly rare, generally has a low re-sale value.

ImOnlyMakingPlansForNigel · 26/08/2026 13:56

I wear mine occasionally, but on the other hand 😂
It’s a beautiful sapphire, and was custom made to fit my super tiny hand, which means I’m unlikely to ever get much money for it if I sold it.

I can put aside the sentimentality of it, and appreciate it for being a stunning piece. My ex laughs when he spots it on me (in a nice way 😂)

BebbanburgIsMine · 26/08/2026 13:57

I put mine in a drawer when we first decided to split as I wasn’t sure what to do with it. It mysteriously disappeared, so I assumed XH had thrown it away, as he did with some of my other belongings.

I sold my wedding ring, didn’t get much for it but I was skint as a single mum to my daughters. Just got some extra food shopping with the money.

Saturdayisthebestday · 26/08/2026 14:02

From my first marriage I sold the ring and got 2k for it. It felt mean keeping it all so I gave my ex husband half. We are still on good terms for the sake of our children.

Jo1667 · 26/08/2026 14:02

I sold mine as I was skint and was moving into my post divorce flat. It helped pay for removal costs.

buzzbuzzfly · 26/08/2026 14:03

Not divorced but have remodelled jewellery: this is much more cost effective as metals are now expensive and the resale value on diamonds was always low vs price paid but has dropped further in recent years

MelonSorbet · 26/08/2026 14:03

Not divorced but also no longer engaged. Still wearing it on the other hand. I bloody love that ring and it's not a typical engagement ring style so I can get away with it.

NotMyRealAccount · 26/08/2026 14:11

I've kept mine. It's not particularly valuable or particularly attractive. I should probably sell it.

Last time I saw my XH, he was still wearing the engagement ring he insisted on having when we went shopping for mine. We've been divorced for over 20 years.
