Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

For what crime out of curiosity? OP was horrendously rude but this doesn't cross a criminal threshold of harassment or public disorder, does it? Or do you mean just as a warning?

Always feeling got at in shops and restaurants, convinced everyone is sneering at them, accusing people of deliberately bumping into them in the street, constantly looking for a fight, and always terribly pleased with themselves about the unhinged abuse they hurl at people, which they consider witty and clever.

I don’t believe this has actually happened but if so, I don’t see how the shop staff was in the wrong. Maybe she wasn’t polite but you wanted to buy a product that was intended for immediate (on the same day) consumption. If you want a melon to last longer buy a whole fruit, otherwise it’s terrible food waste. It takes a lot of water to grow melons and last time I checked there were severe droughts all over Europe.

Yes, and you should have been more careful. Gravity is not exactly a new phenomenon. Fair enough, accidents can happen but the usual response is to recognise your mistake, apologise and move on. You don’t seem able to recognise that you weren’t careful enough but the reality is if you had been it wouldn’t have happened. It’s didn’t have to be a big deal and it was rude of the sales assistant to comment even if she did think you were being disrespectful of the fact the products you knocked to the floor are there to be sold, but your reaction was still completely disproportionate and unreasonable.

You mauled several pots of fruit, which in itself is pretty unhygienic, then knocked several pots into the floor, again unhygienic, and finally gave a member of staff a shocking amount of abuse. If the security staff had frog-marched you out of the store at that point I would have applauded their actions.

Of course she is. It's a talk forum, why wouldn't she? In real life people like you are infuriating, but they lay it on so thick that ordinary people know there isn't much point in picking them up on it - it would just make a hideous scene that would be mortifying for the ordinary person and water off a duck's back to the rude person.
So its great when the rude person comes on to MN and the ordinary people get to say their piece without being part of some awful stupid kerfuffle in a shop.

To be honest, I think it's a little amusing. OP, you did what a lot of people may wish to do when nitpicked by total strangers but don't have the guts or their polite off-switch kicks in, lol.

If she's just tutted and let it go, none of this would've happened though am sure she'd never had expected to get a mouthful like yours.. She must see annoying people hundreds of times a week, working with the general public, does she comment on all their shopping habits?

When i clicked on the thread I was expecting to read that you had told a member of staff to "fuck off" and that alone would have been enough to get you banned. She sounds officious and bossy but the best way to handle situations such as this is to remain calm, walk away with your dignity and your right to use the shop intact. Having had a rough upbriging is no excuse, I live in a rough area and shop at a massive Asda where all sorts goes on but i have never witnessed customers or staff getting into verbal altercations.

I do when I'm grabbing lunch out and about. People with disabilities do who can't chop melon themselves. Countless other people I'm sure, otherwise they wouldn't sell it.

I think you’re reading too much into it tbh. It’s quite easy to knock stuff over in supermarkets with the way they are stacked. It doesn’t mean op was being careless. The shop owner should have either offered to help or kept quiet.

My DS threw up in a cinema the other week and I’m so glad the staff member was actually nice to me about it.

I really hope you can learn from this. Remiove the c-word from your vocabulary because one day a child will push you to your limit. They do with all of us, but we wouldn't all call them what you called that woman.
