Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

If I wanted the shortest date produce, or any old jacket spud I would do an online order, but they fuck those up too often, I generally treat people how they treat me.
Not sure i would comment on her looks as no one can help how they are born but I would of commented on her snotty behaviour.

Just hand the short dates back to- they do it all the time.

One of the reasons I’ve given up online shopping (who wants 500g of yogurt that has 36 hours left on it?) - that and the fact that some of the substitutes are insane (strawberry scented shampoo instead of a punnet of strawberries, anyone?)

As well as telling OP to shop in Asda or Aldi, because they’ll be used to language like that. Some of the responses on this thread are very telling indeed. I find the Asda / Aldi insult more offensive than OP’s original tirade.

The OP’s language is indefensible (which I think she admits). People are just being twats on this thread.

ilovesooty · 25/08/2026 12:32

You can untick the substitutes box or hand back unsuitable goods.

She was talking to the other non-believers.

Edited

I know someone who ordered a pot of double cream and got two pots of single.

I’m so glad you got my somewhat dated reference 😂

Don’t buy the fresh cheese OP, you MUST buy the rancid manky cheese at the front!

God, M&S are dreadful for selling short dated dairy products. I've had milk, cream, custard all on the turn within a day or two of purchase from them. I never buy from there without a good rummage to the back - I'm with OP on this one and think there have been some nuts comments about the 'right way' to do your shopping. Perhaps some of these zealots might consider the busy people advance buying for a particular event or those who live rurally and are only at their supermarket once a week or less. Not to mention those of us who just don't want to be palmed off with short dated goods about to go off or be less that their best - a supermarket's turn over issue is not the customer's job to manage.

Laurmolonlabe · 25/08/2026 12:49

Anyone would ban you for language and abuse like that- you are lucky they didn't call the police, because they could have.
The staff mamber was being a little unreasonable, but nothing which should have triggered an outburst like she got.
Destroying displays is not acceptable, if you insist on looking at the dates further back you have to make sure you don't knock the ones at the front onto the floor.
As to rights, you have no rights in this matter- a shop can ban anyone for any reason, including destroying displays- you could have been banned even without the outburst.
I definitely would have banned you, and reported you- you really cannot expect to treat people like you have without consequences.

Hi all,
Just to say that we're getting quite a few reports of ill temper on this thread, so we're asking everyone to consider posting in a manner more akin to a chilled out entertainer than razor gang streetfighter, at least while we have a look.

You OK hun? Grin

#Kidding. 😘 And LOL at razor gang streetfighter! 😆 I'm shocked the thread is still standing actually as it resembles Swiss cheese now! (With so many posts deleted!)

It is quite an entertaining thread though. Maybe we should be thanking @Alderedge1 😆

Sweet baby Jesus and the orphans…. I didn’t destroy anything. I tried to manoeuvre.
A few pots- they fell. I picked them up. Are you for real? You’re literally talking as though I’m the mad melon destroyer.

Potty mouth aside, I do actually agree with you @Alderedge1 I hunt for the better dates too. Purely because only DH and I live at home now, (DC are adults/have left home,) and a loaf of bread can last 5-6 days. So it's no good getting a loaf with 3-4 days shelf life on it, so we do try to get a loaf that has a week's shelf life on it if possible.

Same here. I’m not going to buy something that only has a couple of days left. It just doesn’t work for me

Well I’ve explained in detail what happened However you appear to be another mystic meg! Sorry if my version ( the reality) doesn’t fit your narrative babe

Not a mystic meg and certainly not your babe. My point is your perception of reality is one sided. Nothing to do with a narrative and everything to do with there is clearly another side to this which doesn't match yours. Amazing the way you continue to be so defensive after your completely outrageous and disgusting behaviour. Instead to seeing both side you just want to deflect. You were right to be banned - and let's assume that the store has face recognition so let's hope you get caught again.

I think you handled it badly, and you said you'd let yourself down so hopefully you will have a think about your reaction to the situation.
But with that out of the way you did nothing wrong. I always look behind for later dates and will move products to find a better date, then put the others back. Why would I purchase items with a short date if longer dated ones are there?
Yes its not great items fell but the op.picked them up. The only thing she did that was not ok was the swearing.

You know you were out of order and a heart felt apology would be in order.

But, I think you also need to look at why you reacted. You'd "won", you got your melon, with a longer date and restacked the shelf.

The question for your own sanity and to stop it happening again is why did you care so much that she agreed to your attempts to be conciliatory. Why did it bother you if she thought badly of you? Same with some of your responses on here.

If you need people to agree or at least validate your views, then maybe counselling would be a good idea to build up your self esteem so you don't care and can stay polite when people differ.

Does the world revolve around you, your complete lack of awareness and your lack of social context and etiquette, or are you naturally that naive?

You've fairly changed your tune. You've been highly obnoxious throughout the thread, arguing with a few different posters, posts deleted and now you're all smiling emojis and entertained?

Mooselander · 25/08/2026 08:10

I explained why in my last post. It’s FIFO.

Like I said, customers like you are ten a penny. Unfortunately the general public do not know how to behave appropriately.

You should also be aware that shops and supermarkets in the same area pass photos and descriptions of banned/problematic customers around, so don’t be surprised to find you’ll have an extra eye or two on you when you shop nearby.

You'd really disapprove of me then. I literally lift the top tray off to get to the fresher produce underneath. I don't consider it a selfish act, just using my initiative.

Alderedge1 · 25/08/2026 08:02

Don't let it go out of date 🤣

MintChocCat · 25/08/2026 14:44

OP, whilst I do think you were wrong. I did laugh a bit at what you said, bloody hell. Anne Robinson 🤣🙈

DirtyBird · 25/08/2026 14:45

yikes! What an overreaction. But I do understand coming from a rough background and not having a good grip over your emotions. However she was wrong but you should've ignored her or reported her to a supervisor. Also it's not nice to insult people's looks, but I'm sensitive to that type of thing as I have been bullied and mocked a lot in my life.

I think it’s probably something innate.
