Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

I wasn’t talking to you dear

You were commenting on my thread, so you kind of were talking to me. Do you understand how threads work, or do you need some guidance sweetheart?

I hope your email asks for you to be allowed to go into the store to apologise personally to the woman you were an absolute cunt to. Wouldn't normally say that but you seem ok with the word, so...

All you had to say was that you weren't going to be using the food straight away so needed a later use by date. And I can't see from your description how she was nasty or rude. It seems it was her appearance that got you in a froth.

Then you’ve not read the post properly. Do you think it’s ok to comment about ‘customers acting like they own the store? Is that ok?

In this situation, for you, yep. And the store manager thought so too.

Cheesemaker26 · 25/08/2026 10:08

Well, obviously it’s not meant to be taken literally, it refers to any manufacturers of dairy products ;)

I’m so glad you got my somewhat dated reference 😂

Don’t buy the fresh cheese OP, you MUST buy the rancid manky cheese at the front!

JoannaVictoria · 25/08/2026 10:44

I swear I know what shop this is and where..
just based on your description of the shop assistant .

Aside from that. She started it and was really rude and not appropriate to a customer at all. I do think she should have been spoken to about it. she behaved as if you were rearranging things in her front room or something.

I do think you probably lost the moral high ground and your temper by the sound of it though but I can understand why. Hopefully it will make her think twice from being so rude and petty to customers!

NearlyNewNonny · 25/08/2026 10:47

HRTFT but if this has any veracity you were vile and deserved the ban.

HopeMumsnet · 25/08/2026 10:54

Hi all,
Just to say that we're getting quite a few reports of ill temper on this thread, so we're asking everyone to consider posting in a manner more akin to a chilled out entertainer than razor gang streetfighter, at least while we have a look.

SnowFrogJelly · 25/08/2026 10:54

You were totally out of order and deserved to be banned

Balloonhearts · 25/08/2026 10:57

I'd have snapped at her too, she was being a bitch, but what you said went too far. You cannot talk to people like that and expect no consequences. I'm not sure an apology is going to cut it on this one. Think I'd just find a different supermarket to use, chalk it up to a learning moment and work on biting your tongue a little more.

My jaw actually dropped when I read your post. I genuinely thought it was made up.

You seem to be quite pleased with yourself tbh and have replied in a very patronising way to PP.

It would be a cold day in hell before I’d plaster myself on a public forum like this.

The shop worker wasn’t perfect in her handling of the situation but you launched an absolute rocket at her.

Yes, you can pick whichever items you want but you were seriously out of order.

I explained why in my last post. It’s FIFO.

Like I said, customers like you are ten a penny. Unfortunately the general public do not know how to behave appropriately.

You should also be aware that shops and supermarkets in the same area pass photos and descriptions of banned/problematic customers around, so don’t be surprised to find you’ll have an extra eye or two on you when you shop nearby.

What is FIFO?

And I’m not sure the passing around of photos for daring to legitimately buy a later dated item is GDPR compliant.

Outbiv interest, what do supermarkets allow home delivery customers and click and collect customers to hand back items if they feel the date is too short? And why have supermarkets started putting guaranteed date lengths as reassurance to customers on their online shopping platforms?

If a shop has a problem with its stock control, that isn’t a customer’s problem.

Intrigued20 · 25/08/2026 11:21

Yeah this thread is weirdly nasty.

First in first out

i also don’t have a problem reaching to the back for the things with a longer shelf life,

Now I get it.

Still not a customer’s problem

She was rude, you were abusive. They shouldn’t let you back in, their likely low paid staff deserve more respect at work than you are able to give.

Also it is literally her job to determine which products you can and cannot buy. You don’t have a god given right to the best date. The shelves were probably stacked like that to stop customers buying the longer dated stuff and leaving the shorted dated stuff.

Which policy does Waitrose have that states customers may only purchase food with thr shortest expiry dates?

I thought pretty much everyone knew to do this?

I think OP is OTT, btw. Not sure I'm buying it.

Is there not an Asda in Alderly Edge you could use instead - they wont be phased by language like that.
