Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

I was responding to the fact that the jobsworth would hopefully from now on not police anyone else's choice with how they spend their money.

I can guarantee this wasn't the first time she's mouthed on to a customer, and if nobody has ever told her to wind her neck in, that's why she's carried on.

The employee was definitely in the wrong for criticising OP in the first place. If the more-recently-dated food wasn't available for sale it should have been kept out back in storage and not brought out onto the shelves until the shop was willing to sell it. If it's on the shelves then it's available for sale. Forcing customers to take the over-ripe blackening bananas, rather than the greeny-yellow newer ones, would swiftly mean the shop lost all its customers, and melon is no different. The older packs are mushy at the edges and less nice and we have no obligation to buy them. Put a half-price sticker on them if you want them gone.

The verbal abuse was still unacceptable. If OP had kept a civil tongue she would have been entirely blameless.

And if the abusive employee had kept a civil tongue instead of being a sneery, abusive little creep, OP would have gone about her day quite happily.

You don't get to decide what's proportional for a victim of abuse.

I can assure you - having the entire warehouse of souvenirs on these cunts since I grew up being bullied by one - I have a very competent handle on exactly how to deal with them.

I hope your email asks for you to be allowed to go into the store to apologise personally to the woman you were an absolute cunt to. Wouldn't normally say that but you seem ok with the word, so...

All you had to say was that you weren't going to be using the food straight away so needed a later use by date. And I can't see from your description how she was nasty or rude. It seems it was her appearance that got you in a froth.

in all seriousness OP - I get why you reacted (particularly if this kind of behaviour is a trigger for you - I can sniff these types out a mile off and my first instinct is to want to carry out a public service) but you gave her what she wanted: attention as a poor down trodden little victim who was only trying to be a good and decent human being 🙄 at your expense.

Don't give people like that the satisfaction. if it helps in future as you smile at these types, imagine how small and meaningless they feel inside, because it’s generally true.
