Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

@Alderedge1 well if you are banned for being abusive (and despite relenting on mumsnet) it doesn't change anything by asking if YABU/YANBU... You knew the answer before you posted?

This isn't an AIBU thread though - it's a chat thread.

Mooselander · 25/08/2026 08:10

Alderedge1 · 25/08/2026 08:01

Why are we supposed to?? Why do I need to pay full price for a shorter date when fucking Janice and Peter can swan in 2 hours later, pay the same and get a better date. Sorry but nope, not me. I’m going straight for the back. You should see me in the bread aisle. I’m like a date hunting bastard.

I explained why in my last post. It’s FIFO.

Like I said, customers like you are ten a penny. Unfortunately the general public do not know how to behave appropriately.

You should also be aware that shops and supermarkets in the same area pass photos and descriptions of banned/problematic customers around, so don’t be surprised to find you’ll have an extra eye or two on you when you shop nearby.

OP still wanted people to side with her though, and most people haven't.

And people are still allowed to say she is being unreasonable, even if the thread is not on AIBU. It's not against the rooolz!

I know and I agree it looks disproportionate. I think it was just her nasty, spiky unpleasantness and the fact that she thought she could tell which pot to buy, it was the “acting like I own the place” comment that tipped me. I was just trying to find some melon that would last a few days!!

Very worryingly you appear to be trying to justify your attack. You are seriously off kilter.

You know you went to far and looks like you are looking for ways to apologise. The insult is so specific it reminds me of something you might see in a movie. Would I be right in thinking you are quite quick witted normally and not usually so caustic.
You did nothing wrong in finding the best date melon and the shop assistant was out of order. You were triggered and that's where your behaviour became sub optimal. But you know that.

Well, I found it kind of funny tbh… I would have taken the opportunity to speak to the manager as requested though and explained her staff shouldn’t be speaking to customers like that. You were doing nothing wrong at all, lots of people do that. She was prickly and rude so you snapped. You obviously shouldn’t have but the Ann Robinson remark is funny.

It’s not really. Perhaps for a few who say they find it funny when typed out on mn but for supermarket staff it’s the usual ageist abuse that some women will get from people who think it’s ok.

It’s because she’s embarrassed, as she should be (though she has too much pride to admit that).

I’ve clearly said that I regret lowering myself by using that language and that I regret it. However I’m not bothered if it upset the lady as she was awful, rude and goady

Got right under your skin, didn’t she? 😁

I think I live in another dimension from most mumsnetters 😂

I've laughed all the way through this thread @Alderedge1 The fact that came out of your mouth straight away is impressive. I bet Temu Anne Robinson was shocked that someone actually answered her back 😂

Fucking cantaloupe right enough 😂

And you were baited so easily, and now she lives rent free in your head 🙂

Well maybe Waitrose Anne Robinson will think twice about being rude to customers again, so technically @Alderedge1 has done everyone who shops there a favour.

Someone is doing their job. You were beyond rude and I’m not surprised you’ve been banned.

I worked in a supermarket, I was never told to scold customers for choosing their own food, whatever date was on it. The woman was a jobsworth and should have just been ignored. The tirade unfortunately was too much.
