Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

Meh… I don’t condone calling people cunts. I hate that word and it annoys me to no end that it’s dp’s favourite word. But she really did need to shut her mouth. I think I probably would have gone more along the lines of asking her if all the melon was for sale or just the front pots. Then informing her in that case I’ll be spending my money on whichever pot I please.

I wouldn’t necessarily apologise outright. I would email a complaint about the jobsworth while including that I wasn’t proud of my actions.

Probably not but that makes it worse not better. Who needs to endure that kind of abuse.

don't tell me the petty-minded "small pointy woman" doesn't reach to the back of the shelf for the item with the longest sell-by date 🤨. the Anne Robinson clone is no angel. she is not used to someone standing up to her & met her match on this occasion 👌👍🏾😮‍💨

Littlemissstar90 · 24/08/2026 17:48

The woman in the shop does sound awful, she would have made me see red too. I often get things from the back, otherwise its a waste of money! She had no right to tell you not to do that. You should have kept that thought of her in your head though, that's what I do! Or perhaps complained about her behaviour. I suppose this will be a lesson for you that bad language does have consequences. What's done is done OP, if you're really bothered about being banned maybe offer an apology.

Kate011 · 24/08/2026 17:49

Should have out Karened her, asked for her name, put her in her place and lectured her like a child about her awful customer service skills and then asked to speak to her manager.

then, left a bunch of complaints and bad reviews about her, also making up fake profiles/asking loved ones to leave the same about her.

You were in the right until you started swearing at her. You should never start getting personal if you're having an argument.

I’m going to leave it a few weeks and then go back. I’m actually changing my hair colour next week so I’m hoping I’ll go unnoticed

Stop blaming your upbringing. Take responsibility. You said awful things. And ironically came across like a complete scumbag.
You had the uperhand untill that point. And should have held your head high and just walked away .

Nobody cares about trigger warnings and offended young people except said left wing young people. It’s really not as much of a thing as mature people seem to think. Most young people also think all of that is nonsense and that everyone needs to chill out.

Edited

Australia can do Australia, I'm not there and it is of no consequence to me. Op has said that her mother called her a "little C" at the age of 8. That is in no way normal in British culture.

MissMappsGardenProduce · 24/08/2026 17:52

Why has my reply been deleted? Outrageous.

That's why these types think they rule the roost

Attention, acceptance and love

I’m sure the shop assistant would like that too but instead she’s probably reeling from an onslaught of verbal abuse from an unhinged customer. Shame on you.

Like a pointy old witch

Wow! Add insult to injury why don’t you? 😳
What happened to you wanting to apologise??

Portmore · 24/08/2026 17:54

I'm a supermarket manager and I would have issued a banning notice for every store in the company, shared your image on our internal security systems & would have also reported that to police.

Police strongly advise us to report all incidents of physical & verbal assaults on our staff & take reports of such abuse quite seriously.

Police are more likely to follow that up than shoplifting.

Also don’t forget to train your stuff basic customer service skills and tell them not to be annoying busy bodies and bother and harass your customers while they shop

So you think malicious action should be taken so that she might be dismissed?

For what crime out of curiosity? OP was horrendously rude but this doesn't cross a criminal threshold of harassment or public disorder, does it? Or do you mean just as a warning?

Verbal abuse and swearing – Public Order Act 1986 ?

1)A person is guilty of an offence if he—
(a)uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour,

I was once called a "saggy old cunt" by a guy riding his bike on the pavement and getting so close he knocked a drink out of my hand. I shouted at him that he shouldn't be on the pavement.

I wasn't sure which hurt more, being called saggy or being called old? I stewed on it all day. The cunt bit was neither here nor there in the circumstances.

For all anyone knows, the assistant might be more upset at being compared to Anne Robinson.

as a business owner, this woman would be fired immediately for harassing customers and her awful customer service skills. I would make an example out of her.

How many customers would not say anything, walk away hurt and upset and just leave a bad review? Affecting my business?

How many customers would avoid visiting after this unpleasant experience resulting in me losing money? Op alone brings in thousands over years I bet. I bet op is not the only one she bothered.

Thanks to her behaviour I would have lost loyal customers and their business.

OP would get an apology, a thank you for saving me from losing customers and her business and a 100 pound gift card and gift basket of free food
