Seriously shocked at the cost of a fish and small chips supper in our local takeaway . £12 for a haddock and £4.50 for small chips . Hampshire based but even so 😩.

£9 where I am for a regular portion. However there is another "touristy" one that does smaller portions and costs twice as much.

Cod is pretty much endangered. There are other fish available such as cuttlefish but the Great British Public seem determined to only eat whitefish.

You are luckythat there are still fish and chip shops with the hammering has given small businesses with ever-increasing additional costs and regulations.

Local to me is £10 for fish and chips, albeit we are by the coast and when you get it the food is swimming in oil hence why I haven’t eaten it in over 3 years now

It's nearly always haddock in Yorkshire at least. To paraphrase a certain Mr Marks, who started a retail business in Leeds market where everything cost a penny, before he teamed up with Mr Spencer, 'you don't need to ask what type of fish it is, it's haddock'.

I actually went to our local chippy last night Large cod was £11.50 and small cod £8 standard portion of chips was £4.50. The large cod was decidedly not large.

Only with laughter at the thought chippies are charging the same or more 😉

A long time ago, when I was young, i used to go to a chippie in Leeds to get fish and chips for 3. Newspaper was the normal wrapping paper on the outside and I had more wrapping paper and a bag to carry it in and I used to run a bit on the way home so I didn't take too long. So friendly - the queue in the chippie in Leeds. People talked to one another there. Thank you for prompting the memory. Saw it a few years ago - Indian or Chinese now.
Not in Yorkshire, I see my local chippie is charging the same for cod and haddock now. Usually I've been used to seeing haddock priced higher.

A cod supper is about £12 hereabouts (Belfast). Absolutely huge it is. It easily feeds two people. DP is a greedy bastard and there’s no way he could eat it all. But he might die trying🤣 Some places do two cod suppers at a reduced rate and it feeds the four of us no bother. Usually about £20 or so.

Is that a Hungry Horse? I'm not usually a fan as there can be a few rough sorts in our one 🙄but on a sunny day when you can sit outside, their fish and chips, with mushy peas and curry sauce is fab for the price.

Surrey. We were all starving so ordered large fish and large chips for four and a few sauces and mushy peas. Delivery. Was nearly £90!
And of course it was far too much and we threw half of it away.

I am jelly of all your massive mn fishes. Our local chippy does a tiny minnow in a big bubble of batter. I’ve no idea how much is it these days I opted out years ago.

Ive got no idea how much it is round here, not been to chip shop for sbout 2-3 years.Used to like it in weatherspoons but portions got smaller and prices increased.
Its a fish finger sandwich these days, its lower calorie.

I had a small fish dinner recently for £8 (fish, chips, peas and gravy).
A large one was £10.

Saw a time capsule at the weekend from 1996, it had a local (Paignton) fish and chip shop menu in it - cod and chips £2.30!

What do they sell instead and is it comparable taste-wise?

Ours is similar here in Dorset ,Large enough for 2 though .Very nice as well .Fish is very expensive now .We only have as a monthly treat

Paid £7.00 in Cleethorpes recently, stone's throws from beach, beautiful quality and decent sized portion!

£12.50 here for regular haddock and small chips, also Hampshire. Easily enough for two adults (and I will eat a lot of chips). Collection.

Try McDonalds! The prices are shocking, for the portion size. Better off going to a chippy.

£13.70 for cod and chips in my local - the portion size is massive so I think it’s reasonable. Kent.

@Yello24 genuine question: why did you throw the leftovers away instead of just saving them for another time?

Because it doesn’t heat up well. Because it’s not exactly healthy so no need to save it. I used to be fat by treating myself as a dustbin and not wasting food but not any more. It’s already wasted.
