Seriously shocked at the cost of a fish and small chips supper in our local takeaway . £12 for a haddock and £4.50 for small chips . Hampshire based but even so 😩.

£1.50 for a portion of chips from a chippy? I really just don’t believe that and I live in quite a low cost of living part of the UK.

Expensive in London. We split the fish and a bag of chips. Up in Yorkshire it’s a lot cheaper (and I think better) and the pensioners special was perfect. 😂 except that I’m about 15 years off pensionable age!

Far too expensive, we buy battered cod from Sainsbury's to cook and get the chips from the chip shop.

It’s not just the chippies - cod at my local fish counter on the market is more expensive than steak.

Our local is £8.50 for fish and small chips. Perfect size for one person.
But it’s very local, just down a little back street, tiny place.
It doesn’t serve any other food (like sausages, pies), apart from peas and buttered bread rolls, and it has quite limited opening hours.
But the queues are huge when it does open.

The next nearest costs a bit more, but also sells chicken, burgers, sausages, scampi, pies, cans of drink etc. Medium fish and chips there is £10.50.

We used to go to the chippy every other week until last year now I won't even entertain it. Food is so expensive and most of it substandard, I just cannot bring myself to pay it we have started to spend a bit more on nicer food at home instead.

There are multiple people on this thread aying they can get fish and chips between £8 to £10 but you know better based on the one area you live in. How odd

It’s £9.50 by me in London. Excellent chippie too. DH and I share it and it’s plenty so 4.75 each is pretty cheap. I add sides from home.

Wow. Haddock and chips is £8.50 here, the portion is huge and contains two very large haddock. To those saying that British waters are too dirty, that may be there is no commercial fishing done close to UK, fish are depleted. Most UK commercial fleets ship in North Atlantic waters, considered to be one of the cleanest seas in the world.

We have our fish and chips delivered so that may bump up the price but one large cod (before any chips or peas) is £20.

Fish bites meal - small pieces of battered cod, chips, and peas or curry sauce, with a can of soft drink - is £5.99 at lunchtime in the chippy next to my work! I go there about once a month as a treat!

£11 for medium fish and chips from our local vg takeaway - we’re in a nice Surrey village so looks like a good price compared to some others.

They do a small cod and chips lunchtime special for £7.20 too.

We usually get large and split it so it works out cheaper.

Fish and chips for four people, plus one drink each, in Seahouses recently - cost over £100. And now I think about it, my dd had a pie, not fish, and it was still really pricey. And greasy.

£16 in my local and it feeds one person.

I'm in Midlands and you can get a decent cone of chips for £1.20 at a chippy near us. We walk down as a low cost treat with the kids.

£6.90 for a cod and chips (regular portion that would easily feed two) at mine. They also do what they call a ‘Lite Bite’, for £4.50, which is a smaller portion, but even this is a really generous portion of chips and a generous piece of fish.

Fish is expensive and cost of rent/utilities is massive.
We don’t really get fish suppers anymore due to health reasons but they always have so many chips so we’d get a large chips to share and then just the fish (sometimes share a fish if massive).

North west £10 2 weeks ago (£7+3}. Cod, genuine, was huge, chip portion was huge.

I can get two large portions of fish and chips delivered for less than that. Plus a side and sauce!

Before Covid on a Friday when I used to pick up DS from the train station after college we used to sometimes have the £1 lunchtime special a battered sausage and small chips or a couple of fish pieces and chips.

Fish and chips appear to be about 1 hr of national minimum wage. According to Hansard a national minimum wage of 1.65 was suggested - though it didn't happen. In 1980, a portion of fish and chips was 80p. So more expensive.
