Seriously shocked at the cost of a fish and small chips supper in our local takeaway . £12 for a haddock and £4.50 for small chips . Hampshire based but even so 😩.

I am not sure my tummy would.

As kids, we would have a portion of batter scooped out of the fryer for a penny if we couldn't stretch our pocket money to chips.

My local is £19/portion and in addition to that they've changed something about the chips (taste stale even though I seem them coming out the fryer fresh, don't know if they changed to a cheaper potato or they change the oil less frequently) so now I buy the Aldi specially selected beer battered chips and go to Iceland to pick up the Mcain gastro chips. Very tasty and a fraction of the cost!

Here in South West fish and chips are very expensive. Looking at £13-15.

Oil has gone up 50% potatoes 27% and since we put sanctions on Russia (whose fleet most of our haddock, for example, came from) and started buying from Iceland instead we have been paying over 50% more for the fish.

Overfishing is not the real reason, that's been fucked for years. The Ukraine War has indirectly had a huge impact plus there are British political decisions which have increased costs on small business.

I prefer a lamb dopiaza myself, but when I want fish, and chips, I make it at home, I always have a nice fillet or two, of cod, or haddock, in the freezer, that I buy from the local fishmonger, which is always lovely, and fresh, and the rest put in the freezer. I make my own chips, and job done. Condiments are available!

North west here and it's about £12 for cod and large chips.

Love to meet up with friends for a chippy tea, as it's known in these parts, and a catch-up. It usually comes to about £10 each. My friend lives close to the best chip shop. We share the large chip.

That is expensive. Where I am in Staffordshire portions are massive. I usually get a small fish and chips which is £8 and there are way too many for one person. Last week we shared a large fish and chips costing £11 and we were absolutely stuffed. The fish was massive and thick. A large peas between two of us was an extra £2.

Even fast food without meat is expensive - 2 medium pizzas came to £35 on deliveroo here. That used to be how much my weekly shop was about 5 years ago.

While your looking at the sea views are your eyes watering and dropping tears. Thinking i shoulda coulda gone cheaper elsewhere

We had some the other day at this price and it wasn’t good. Chewy and very bony haddock and the odd bits of chips from the fryer. It was near closing time though. In Sussex.

Ours is 18 35 for regular cod and chips.

I would order a kids cod and chips for 9.00

Southeast London

We pay around £16 (Surrey) for a small cod and two small chips. DH has the cod (1 DD just eats chips, then we cook some veggie alternatives for other DD and me) and the four of us share the chips with a fair few left over. So on the face of it it's expensive, but as dinner for 4 it isn't bad.

£8.95 here for large fish and chips but loads of chips so we just get another fish for I think around £5 with curry sauce and peas its around £20 and feeds me and DS who is one of the proverbial 6ft (6.3 actually) teenagers

The fish does not come from inshore fishing. Even there it is not overly polluted. Rivers on the other hand...

About £12 for a medium cod and 1/2 chips which feeds me and my 7 year old with enough chips left over to heat for my lunch the next day. We've shared 1/2 chips between two adults and a child before and not finished the portion. That's in the usually expensive Cambridge.

It’s gone up to £13 where I am. It is not enough for two. Chippie tea used to be a monthly pay day treat now it’s fakeaway. You can buy quite nice beer battered fish 2 for under a fiver in Aldis finest range, bag of scampi, chips mushy peas, tartar sauce. Works out under £20 for five of us.
