Loved the 70s tv one...not sure play would do it justice it's a classic 'play for today' and not sure Tamasin O would fit the bill

It's brilliant and she really does. Honestly, she really is great as is the whole play.

Justploddingonandon · 22/08/2026 16:57

What sort of thing do you like? Les Mis is good if you haven’t seen it already. Book of Mormon if you’re not easily offended. Paddington is brilliant but may be tricky to get tickets if going soon. It seems to be marmite but I also really liked The Lion King. Operation Mincemeat is also great but I don’t like their pricing strategy unless you can get lottery tickets.
For plays I would recommend The Play that goes wrong. Harry Potter and the Cursed child and Stranger things are also very good, though probably helps if you’re fans of them.
If you’re not too fussed what you see I would look on tkts and tidaytix rush and see what has cheap tickets.

We got half price tickets for Book of Mormon last week and we loved it.

ZoeyBartlett · 22/08/2026 17:01

Operation Mincemeat! Music, comedy, pathos, history and a few tears.

AndresyFiorella · 22/08/2026 17:03

Not sure if Arcadia is still on but if it is, go to that for a play. For a musical, Cabaret all the livelong day.

shutterswhitemein · 22/08/2026 17:10

Another vote for The Book of Mormon

Tiptopflipflop · 22/08/2026 17:18

I hated Book of Mormon. Puerile and cringe worthy. I wasn't offended, I just didn't find it funny.

I really enjoyed Hadestown. One of the best musicals I've ever seen.

Operation Mincemeat was surprisingly excellent. Also one of the best I've seen.

anonMH · 22/08/2026 17:20

Don’t bother with Oliver unless Simon Lipkin is back as Fagin.

agree with Hadestown and Operation MM. My partner and son prefer Hadestown and have seen it 3 times , i prefer MM and have also seen it numerous times.

Cabaret is both incredible and uncomfortable.

The Producers is hilarious and brilliantly done. My son saw Avenue Q and Tinanique last week and also thought both were hilarious. He didn’t rate JCS as much and was disappointed by Beetlejuice.

Paddington is brilliant!

PropertyD · 22/08/2026 17:23

Les miz. There is a reason it’s still going after 40 years!

Mydogisagentleman · 22/08/2026 17:26

Book of Mormon.
DD and I saw it in new York.
I'd love to see it again but the last train home leaves before it finishes

YourJoyousDenimExpert · 22/08/2026 17:26

Operation Mincemeat if it is still on - but may be touring. Best thing I’ve seen in years.
Greatest Showman played to rave reviews in its pre West End slot in Bristol
if you want a play the 39 Steps was great.

Sereine · 22/08/2026 17:47

Cabaret, Operation Mincemeat, Arcadia.

If you go to Operation Mincemeat, try for Stalls seats. The legroom elsewhere is not good.

booksforever · 22/08/2026 18:02

Another vote for Cyrano de Bergerac, we got really good discounted tickets. Adrian Lester was fab as was all the cast. Think it's on until 5th September.

DH hates hiphop rapping etc but thanks for the recommendation

It isn’t “hip hop and rapping” but if he is so restricted in his choices like that, I’d suggest you stick to the inanely dull Lloyd Webber productions.

Book of Mormon
Play that goes wrong

My DH enjoyed both

Play that goes wrong is brilliant. In fact anything by 'mischief' theatre company is excellent, but play that goes wrong made me ache (in a good way) as so good.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 22/08/2026 18:09

Operation Mincemeat

flippinnorastights · 22/08/2026 18:09

To kill a mockingbird

SpottyAlpaca · 22/08/2026 18:13

Musicals aren’t my thing, but the plays I have enjoyed recently are Witness for the Prosecution & To Kill a Mockingbird.

AgnesMcDoo · 22/08/2026 18:19

I love Witness for the Prosecution for a play or Harry Potter

Best musicals Jesus Christ Superstar, Cabaret, Wicked and Six

I think Hamilton is the best musical I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen a lot!)

I’ve seen quite a few and I agree. Hamilton was superb and I was gutted when it finished

Rozbos · 22/08/2026 18:22

Operation Mincemeat, Les Mis or Hamilton. All excellent

I wanted to sit there and see it all again and then decided to never see it again, as it was absolutely perfect.

LIZS · 22/08/2026 19:59

The Comedy about Spies is chaotic and fun, same company do the Play that Goes Wrong.
Cyrano de Bergerac is great and funny but ends in a few weeks
Avenue Q is very funny and a musical.
