Advice for husbands adjusting to daily shaving for a new job

Husband has secured a job where he is facing having to be “clean shaven” or to sport groomed facial hair.

Husband is refusing to go down any bearded road, but is also terrified at the prospect of ripping his skin to shreds every 24 hours. He currently shaves every other day, or further apart if he can get away with it, but he is now facing, with jangling nerves, corporate levels of presentability.

What do other husbands do? Is there some caveman, Reddit-honed secret out there that can help?

I appreciate the fear, my husband gets raw shaving rash. He tried every type of razor, shaver, balm going and until recently his only option is red raw skin or neatly trimmed stubble. He now uses the Phillips one blade and he can get a close enough trim that he looks and feels clean shaven but doesn't get any rash. Actually it's so good I nicked it for myself as I can whizz over my legs or do my bikini line without that horrid itchy regrowth phase. I sound like an advert but it's really worth a go.

My Ex had to shave every day as he was in the Military. It doesn't do any harm.

So did mine and continued into civilian life. He proposed to me one morning, half-shaven, half foam!

Is he also too terrified to be able to use the internet and look this up himself?

It’s not a big deal. We’re sitting in a coffee shop, enjoying thinking about the changes that are afoot for him, and shaving came up. I said that the Mumsetters would have OHs a-plenty with recommendations, and so I started a thread.

Of course, now I’m being asked to explain his puerile infantile helplessness, because so many Mumsnetters like to inflate low-level questioning to LTB drama.

Good Lord - any request for recommendations or advice could be dismissed as helpless nonsense. Well done you, though.

This is very odd op, maybe it sounded better in your head than it did written down, but you made out your husband was some weak little man terrified at the prospect of shaving and who is so incompetent at it he rips his skin to shreds on the daily

if he is the man you made out, a predominant female forum is not the place to ask advice, tell him to be a big boy and seek his own advice not get his wife to ask women for him,

Yes I know women have facial hair but I don't think shaving it is the generally preferred option. As well as the unpleasantness of removing it women have to deal with the psychological effects and confidence issues which goes handl in hand with having facial hair so yes the fact OP's H doesnt have to deal with them makes his issue with shaving seem ridiculous.

I’m honestly shocked by the responses here. This is a real problem for many men. They end up with folliculitis. Some end up losing jobs because they can’t keep up with shaving requirements.

It is a particular issue with the US military at the moment that has traditionally allowed shaving waivers, but the current administration is removing them. Men are losing their careers over a medical condition.

You did make him sound a little pathetic @itgetsthehoseagain in your OP.

Use shaving powder @itgetsthehoseagain, lasts a couple of days at least.

Just saw @Ponderingwindow mention folicullitis, make sure he also uses a good exfoliating wash and lotion to prevent ingrown hairs.

Can he not Google and ask this himself?

Women are on here every day asking questions they could Google for themselves - or even go directly the specific website for that question, like will my son's uni let him.... or how do I get the Tube from A to B.... or can I change/cancel my holiday booking....

A male relative of mine grew a beard in his 2Os because shaving always irritated his skin.

That doesnt make it right though, personally I'd have a separate board that could be hidden for "threads that don't need to clog up the active convos when Google exists" or similar snappy title 😁

Surely a man can solve a problem like this himself?

Thanks to those who offered advice - he’s buying the One-Shave (which looks like a tiny lawnmower).

To those who saw only an opportunity to lurch gleefully into the assumption that my husband is a hopeless man-baby, and to pick apart my role in facilitating this assumption through my use of light-hearted terminology, I’m very happy not to be knowing any of you IRL. Your viciousness is the reason Mumsnet gets bad press, when it is actually a lovely resource for chatter and connection.

I have psoriasis on most of my extremities. I shave my legs once a week and never in winter. It aggravates the psoriasis, but is a necessary evil. Doing it every day would utterly destroy them. My dad had it too and his face always looked raw.

Nothing helpful but mine has sensitive skin (and shaving makes him look super young!) so I forced him down the beard route!

Beard.

My husband has the world's sensitive skin, daily shaving became impossible so he now has a beard , which neither of us like, but is better than the alternative.
