Anyone else fed up with all the Millennial and Gen Z chat?

Anyone else sick of this whole Millennial/Gen Z thing?

I'm 44 and have teens... all of a sudden everything that I do is "Millennial". Skinny jeans binned ages ago, side parting gone. Now they want my winged eye liner. The way I dance is "soooo millennial coded".

Everything online/with my kids seems to be tailored to laugh at me. Even when I try to get it right (by not wearing trainers socks) I get it wrong (apparently trainer socks are ok)

I get I should just suck it up as technically I am middle aged and the youth will always want to be different and mock the square oldies but it feels so defined with this generational chat everywhere.

Obviously I should just wear/dance/do wheat I want but it's getting me down!!!!

Surely, with the noughties apparently making a comeback, this is our time to shine?

Homemerge · 22/08/2026 08:56

Not in the slightest bit fed up

just sort of washes over me. Barely notice it tbh

also a mum of teens

chedderland · 22/08/2026 08:57

Who cares what ridiculous children think of your style. They will be copying it again soon enough. Leave them to the baggy trousers and band t shirts we were wearing 20 years ago.

BadSkiingMum · 22/08/2026 08:59

Who honestly cares? And who on earth wants to wear high-pulled sports socks in hot weather?

I have finally managed to train my hair to go in a side parting and I look much better for it!

Offherrockingchair · 22/08/2026 09:02

In a similar position but I think it was always the way! I know I’m decently turned out for work, perfectly ok clothes and not an embarrassment (objectively speaking at least).

Marroon · 22/08/2026 09:03

I don’t really understand who is telling you these things? Your own children? Some weird version of the media?

I’m millennial and certainly don’t think everything online or with my kids is tailored to laugh at me.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 22/08/2026 09:04

Surely this is less about the different generations and more about your kids treating you with basic respect?

chirrupybird · 22/08/2026 09:06

Just ignore and do what you want and they can do what they want in terms of clothes and dancing, etc. I'm still wearing pretty much what I wore as a teenager, apart from the short skirts and mini bikinis. You can joke back about what they wear and how they dance, 'it was all so much better in my day'. Who cares what teenager's think is cool anyway, we've all been there.

PurplebudsWhitebuds · 22/08/2026 09:07

I don't get this at all. Why on earth do you want to dress like your childen?
Many of the fashion choices I see young women and girls wearing are either tasteless or downright embarrassing.

Find your own style. You might find they will respect you more for being an adult and a person in your own right .

MellowSubmarine · 22/08/2026 09:08

Is it your children criticising you for being “millennial coded”?

Ask them if they’d prefer you dressed exactly like them.

Also I will die on the hill that most people do not suit a middle parting.

Homemerge · 22/08/2026 09:10

Your kids sounds like they are bullying you

This absolutely!
My Dc were pretty hard work as teens but if they overstepped into rudeness they were certainly told to pack it in.

SkyLark79 · 22/08/2026 09:11

just let it wash over you - kids have been embarrassed by their parents since the dawn of time no matter what year they were born! Xx

makes a change from boomer

yes agism is tolerated even when dished out by the generations that think they are so inclusive

lean into it and have some fun

Likeiloveyou · 22/08/2026 09:14

It’s just a rite of passage that you transition through.

You, as a millennial, are in the “embarrassing middle aged” time of your life. Don’t try to fight it, just embrace it.

Easy for me to say as Gen X as obviously we DGAF 🤷‍♀️

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 22/08/2026 09:14

My son one asked me if I could drop him off round the corner instead of outside his school (I was driving a convertible) because ‘your dress is too yellow’ 😂)

BelleEpoque27 · 22/08/2026 09:16

I honestly don't care what they think. Did I care what people in their 40s dressed like when I was a teenager? Nah. You won't be able to keep up with them, because you're old. It's ok - embrace it.

It's only because of the internet that all this generational stuff is a thing. It's just another way to encourage discord and societal breakdown.

I like feeling elderly. I smile fondly at teens wearing Smashing Pumpkins t-shirts with baggy jeans and DMs, and find it amusing they have no idea they look exactly like I did 30 years ago (and in 30 years they'll be exactly the same as me).

ChalkOutlines · 22/08/2026 09:18

DD tried it a few times but I just go “I know!!” And break out my “dance moves”. She’s easily embarrassed, I’m not. I win every time. Grin

MickyMoonshine · 22/08/2026 09:20

I’m the same age as you and I honestly couldn’t care less. I wear what I want, have a hair style I know suits me and looks good, wear whatever make up I want and feel comfortable in my gym legging and socks. I know my own mind and know what I like.

If my child was rude to me about my appearance he’d be told in no uncertain terms that he was out of order and that it was inappropriate to comment on a persons appearance in a negative way.

user293948849167 · 22/08/2026 09:20

Why are you so bothered? Yeah I have banter with my DC but I’m not going to change how I look for their approval that’s weird and a bit pathetic.
And anyway my youngest is Gen Alpha which is clearly better than millennials and Gen Z, more sensible by far 😉

daffodilandtulip · 22/08/2026 09:22

Someone said to me a while back that they had stopped asking their children about their clothes, and nothing has helped me more! I found people my age to follow, which made me feel “normal”.

Homemerge · 22/08/2026 09:24

I don’t think the Op will be back

Basically no Op… we don’t relate to our kids essentially bullying us and making us feel shit

I'm back!!! It's more online than my kids although they like a laugh too. Wouldn't say they bully me but they do take the piss and roll their eyes, all my friends teen are the same, thought that was normalish?

It just feels like a cultural thing .. I was watching an eye make up tutorial on Instagram and it was all about how cats eye was "Millennial". I feel like everything on SM references people's generation and I find it annoying.

I definitely have my own style and would say I've always been a classic dresser, very simple tailored clothes, lots of black and neutrals with gold jewellery, that sort of thing. I'm not chasing the teen look at all but maybe feel I'm at a bit of a turning point age wise which is why all this generational chat irritated me.

No OP, my kids don’t belittle me and make feel feel crap enough to start a Mumsnet thread about how fed up I feel about the way my teens to talk to me and make me feel silly
