What ideas would help improve women and girls’ safety day to day?

Ladies and girls safety ideas/ Chat.

Just a brainstorming chat.

What would ladies like to see set up or like to see that helps women and their safety.

The ladies taxi service is a good one. I don't see any lady taxi drivers though. I'm.not sure they want to do it in a big way?
Would any of you want to do it?
Think there are already female only gyms not sure? We've got ask Angela in some venues for help.

How about a messaging app where you can message or text another lady on your journey home to say your safe and your home, your in the taxi etc, just a reassuring thing.

I guess people can already do that and text friends and family. Would there be any need for a separate service?
Do all ladies tell all friends and family what they are doing all the time?

What would you like to see out there?
What do you think ladies would use?

I love to try and think stuff up or see what people would use.

There is so much around ladies and girls safety today?

So many of these rely on someone being attacked before action can be taken though, so women will always be traumatised in the process.

I feel we might need to look at hormone monitoring of men; those with excess testosterone might need to be supervised or monitored as we know there are correlations to violent behaviour. If women can take a pill every day men should be able to do a monthly hormone test. The issue is normalising these things and getting men to participate when they don't see the issue of rape and violence as a problem for them.

AlwaysExtraHot · 22/08/2026 10:32

how about men stop attacking/threatening/harassing women?
why should it be women having to put in the work and strategies to keep themselves safe?

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 22/08/2026 12:13

Men need to made to fear the consequences of being accused of rape and assault of women. Right now, the balance is in the favour of the rapist. Being violent to women is something you get away with. The chances of any negative consequences of raping a women are so small, it’s effectively decriminalised in the UK. It should ruin men’s lives. Telling them to do the right thing doesn’t work, we need to make them scared not to.

Popstarrrrr · 22/08/2026 12:17

Extract testosterone from men at birth to minimal levels to ensure survival. Pass an exam to receive it back at 25. If you fuck up it's removed again.

Joking not joking

Japan has female only train sections and female waiting area. Thought that was pretty cool

That’s a shame you can’t check in with your friends after you’ve been out @EmeraldRoulette I’m part of a group of three single women and we always check to make sure everyone has got home safely whenever we meet up. There’s nothing ridiculous about it.

My friends and family often say text when you're home or whatever. But I am not sure what I would do if someone didn't contact. It's of limited value in ensuring safety. I would like to see better public transport with staffing at stations etc.

5miles · 22/08/2026 15:08

Phoneline is called Strut Safe.
My DD20 back at uni soon, she has a pocket alarm, told not to walk alone, lets friend know when leaving club and when she gets back. They use Uber a lot but I don't trust any drivers in lockable cars even if all rides are apparently logged.
I worry a lot and it pisses me off.
Can we not rise up and reclaim the streets?

Men stopping being cunts.

Serious answer, the education curriculum incorporating education of boys around what is and isn't acceptable(this won't be effective onsome of them obviously).

Women learning self defence of some sort. Perhaps again, should be taught in schools.

I keep myself safe by refusing to go to a gym, or pub that doesn't allow my dog to be with me (of course not 100% of the time, allowing for holidays etc but overall).

My ex (female) was a taxi driver. She was tall, very masculine and hard as they come. I loved her for making that choice.

When my DW walked to work at 5am if she didn't text I would have freaked out.
So no txt everything was ok.
Switched to taxis not affordable on mine wage 16hr.
When one of her colleagues followed same route by a guy in a car she hid in a car park till her husband collected her.

SewYellowLikeButter · 22/08/2026 19:51

Cab companies to set up inside facing dash cams that are monitored.

The main thing would be to allow women to carry something to protect themselves (not guns but say pepper spray or a flick out baton). But it would likely just be either used by men to harm them or by teenagers to harm each other.

friedaklein · 22/08/2026 19:52

So many incidents of assault on the Tube lately. I don't actually want women only carriages but something needs to be done. More security?

FloofyKat · 22/08/2026 20:05

I would like to see better education in schools so that young people grow up with a much better grasp of what is / is not acceptable behaviour on the streets, in relationships, in friendship groups. I’d like to see them learn about what sexist behaviour looks like and why it’s wrong. I’d like to see them taught about DV, coercive control, how to recognise the signs and what to do if they spot those signs.

I’d like to see poor behaviour called out by these who see it, particularly men in groups of other men, either their male friends etc. They need to know that it’s not just banter, or lads talk, or boys being boys. They need to make it unacceptable among their peers/ colleagues. They need to reach all this to their sons.

The police need better training and resources to deal with male on female violence, stalking, DV in all its forms. A more visible police presence on the streets would be great.

I’m angry that it’s still seen is women’s job to fix all the bad behaviour (by men) and that we are supposed to make ourselves safe. It’s time the men took responsibility for their own behaviour and made the changes that would help keep EVERYONE safe.

friedaklein · 22/08/2026 20:15

In my part of London, there are gangs of loud sweary teens, often targeting middle aged women. So far only had the odd abuse and squirting with a water gun as a prank, but I get nervous around them.

Young people probably need more free venues and things to get them busy. But there's no money.

You can't stop it sadly. Violence has been going on for years by men against women.

Ban porn, strip clubs, prostitution, surrogacy, all forms of commercial exploitation of women.

Female only commune type communities. For all ages. So 20-30, 30-40 for example. So large buildings with private en-suite rooms but communal areas. Get women looking out for each other.

I don't know many women who would sign up to be on a course with a lot of boys and men who take the option because they failed GCSEs or feel it is a masculine job - I can't imagine they would be kind to a girl on a course with them. Maybe single sex trade schools? I'd sign up for bricklaying at 50!

Love this - really want to see one of these in our area https://www.newgroundcohousing.uk/

New Ground Cohousing

Older Women's Co-Housing is a group of women who are creating their own community.

Many women are trapped in abusive relationships, either due to poor finances or not recognising that their relationship is unhealthy. I'd like women to have better escape routes out of the family home and easy access to help and support.

This should be the main focus. Women are at most risk from their partners.

Screamingabdabz · 23/08/2026 09:51

There is a flip side to ‘men not being cunts’ and that’s women not putting up with or breeding with cunts. A glance round the threads on MN tells me that in 2026, young mothers are still living lives of domestic servitude, and often willingly. What does that model to the next generation about the worth of women?

Education is needed on both sides about self esteem, the dynamics of power and civic responsibility.

MidnightPatrol · 21/08/2026 21:14

It would be good if the police did their bloody job and investigated and prosecuted offenders.

Rather than just shrug off crimes against women as being too difficult to prosecute.

And the police attitude that because no actual crime has been committed they 'can't do anything'
When I was young, if a man harassed a woman and put her in a state of fear with looks, body language and comments, a couple of male officers would come out and have a stern word with him. Now they won't attend until it's too late to prevent an assault, and often send young, slightly built female officers who the offenders have no respect for and aren't intimidated by at all.
I agree men and boys need more education on how to behave around women.

kerrby31 · 23/08/2026 10:06

If there was an app that you could use to somehow livestream your walk home or perhaps record any odd behaviour you're encountering? . If it was recorded somewhere not on your phone and linked to the authorities maybe it would deter men from approaching or following lone women ? Sort of like an electronic guardian angel to call anytime?

MyKindHiker · 23/08/2026 10:16

I like where you’re coming from but @girlfriend44 and many other comments (architecture, street lighting, gyms) are not data driven at all. Getting an absolutely perfect bullet proof taxi model would reduce crime against women and girls by about 0.000001% because crimes are mostly not happening in cabs, or in dark streets by strangers. You should listen to the MPs each year reading out the names of all women who have been killed by men that year - there are only ever 1 or 2 out of the massive list who have been killed by strangers.

Statistically most crime against women and girls is by partners or people known to them. So we need to start by looking at that.

Blanket ban on all violent porn. Effective controls to prevent under 18s accessing any porn at all.

Proper education of boys about relationships, consent, control.

More integrated services - GPs, mental health, social services. Women showing up with mental health problems - asking curiously why, what’s going on for her before just prescribing meds.

A bigger discussion as a society. People feeling they can intervene if they see behaviour that’s wrong - fathers being violent to their kids, abusive to their partners. Zero tolerance.

I’d go as far as to say a ban on sex work also. A society which says women can be bought and sold is saying women are less than human. Or that there are categories of women - wives and mothers vs disposable tarts. Sex work is statistically the most dangerous profession, and as long as we have this idea that women can ‘consent’ to be sold, it’s very hard to pick out the women who have been coerced. So let’s just assume they’ve all been coerced and they’d probably rather have a job that didn’t involve getting anally raped and do the decent thing.
