Ideas for a comforting meal and film after DH’s particularly difficult work day

DH (WFH) has had a truly awful day at work which I’ve witnessed every time I’ve walked past the (home) office. Had texts saying things like, ‘I’m going to burst into tears in this meeting in a minute.’ DH usually very stoic so unusual. I’d like to do something nice to make up for it tonight.

I’m currently cleaning the kitchen which is usually DH’s job but any suggestions on nice meals to make or a film to watch? DH doesn’t eat red meat or like white condiments (so no mayonnaise or sour cream etc) but otherwise happy to make anything. We don’t have loads of money to throw at it but I can stretch to a special home cooked meal. I’m a fair cook and can certainly follow a recipe.

Is there a lovely happy film I could suggest that anyone’s seen recently?

Hear me out on this: The Sheep Detectives.

murasaki · 20/08/2026 17:27

Marry me chicken and mashed potatoes.

Your poor dh @afaloren -are you looking for something hearty and stodgy as comfort food or something to occupy him like fajitas or something more special?
is it something fixable?

I'd go for comfort. Pasta, cheese, a crumble, and Forest Gump!

Never seen this film.

Who's in it?

😁

Oh fajitas might work! DH loves Mexican food.

Sausage mash and peas with Yorkies puddings

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 20/08/2026 17:32

Oh and film wise the glass onion/knives out ones?

Iocanepowder · 20/08/2026 17:33

My DH really enjoyed Liar Liar recently.

For food, my comfort meal is pasta in garlic butter and melted cheese, with fish fingers.

Bizkibee · 20/08/2026 17:35

Chicken katsu curry has a real comfort food feel. We have a brilliant Hairy Bikers dieting recipe where the sauce is mainly carrots and mushrooms but it is so moreish.

Could you stretch to getting him out of the house? Vue cinema tickets are fairly economical.

Marry me chicken and mashed potatoes.

Is that just the film, or the film followed by the dinner suggestion?

Because if it's just the film, I want to see it. Especially to see Chicken and Mashed Potatoe's wedding dress.

To be fair, I'd watch it too!

Silverbirchleaf · 20/08/2026 17:38

Toad in the hole - good comfort food.

Hot fuzz is always a good watch.

cartreffi · 20/08/2026 17:38

for a film, molly & billy an otter love story (documentary on channel 4) is absolutely joyous, everyone I’ve recommended it to has loved it

LondonLass2026 · 20/08/2026 17:41

Lasagne for the meal if you have time!

Hard to say re the film, depends on his tastes. To cheer myself up, it's always Notting Hill, Pretty Woman and East is East but everyone is different.

Any of the American Pie series of movies? Love those.

Good luck! 🩷

That’s a great thing to do for him. If you’ve got spices in already this Butter Chicken is delicious and v easy:

I leave out the fenugreek and cardamon though, personal taste.

No good film tips sadly, looking for ideas.

Romy Gill's quick and easy butter chicken recipe is perfect for two, but you can easily scale it up.

Chicken sausages, cheesy mash, onion gravy & fresh veggies. A tub of really good ice cream in his favourite flavour for pudding. I’m currently loving Waitrose Santo Domingo Chocolate ice cream, which goes beautifully with fresh raspberries.

NervousSheepy · 20/08/2026 17:55

Little Miss Sunshine is always a good distraction and very heart warming.

afaloren · 20/08/2026 17:56

Some great ideas here, thank you all for being lovely.

Still going through all your suggestions. Lots of the films you have kindly suggested we have watched recently but not the otter story as recommended by @cartreffi

Finally got the weather for comfort food today too! We’ve had a thunderstorm today which was bliss.

Also, what a lovely thing of you to do, I think you are really showing you're there for him which will mean a lot.

MadameBethune · 20/08/2026 17:58

Film - the Ballad of Wallis Island.

Really funny, gentle, made in Wales.

Sunshineandoranges · 20/08/2026 18:00

Im not usually a Ryan Goslin fan but Project Hail Mary is gripping and by the end you are empathising with an alien rock person.
