Ideas for a comforting meal and film after DH’s particularly difficult work day

DH (WFH) has had a truly awful day at work which I’ve witnessed every time I’ve walked past the (home) office. Had texts saying things like, ‘I’m going to burst into tears in this meeting in a minute.’ DH usually very stoic so unusual. I’d like to do something nice to make up for it tonight.

I’m currently cleaning the kitchen which is usually DH’s job but any suggestions on nice meals to make or a film to watch? DH doesn’t eat red meat or like white condiments (so no mayonnaise or sour cream etc) but otherwise happy to make anything. We don’t have loads of money to throw at it but I can stretch to a special home cooked meal. I’m a fair cook and can certainly follow a recipe.

Is there a lovely happy film I could suggest that anyone’s seen recently?

Project Hail Mary and take away.

I love the book so much I'm ignoring the film but I've only heard love for the Project Hail Mary movie.

The Martian is a bit less slapstick and (in my opinion at least) a much more believable story than Project Hail Mary. It's definitely got funny bits in it and some very touching moments, albeit not as much as PHM does. On the other hand it doesn't require nearly as much suspension of disbelief either. It doesn't have the same kind of relationship that Grace has with Rocky but it does have more human characters, with more varied personalities, and I think it manages tension a bit better overall.

That being said, I think my view is coloured by the way that The Martian is a better film than it was a book whereas I think it's the other way round for PHM. The Martian book had very two-dimensional characters and was very much "Oh look, this problem has arisen. And now this is how the protagonist solves it". The film fleshes out the characters and makes the story line more involving.

PHM as a book was (arguably over-) long but covered a lot of what could have been fantastic scenes that were just outright ignored in the film. Yes, the relationship between Grace and Rocky was fun and touching on the screen but it was so rushed that it seemed like one minute they'd met for the first time and the next they were bantering with each other and arguing over complex science. It seemed weirdly rushed while also being way too long.
