Ideas for a comforting meal and film after DH’s particularly difficult work day

DH (WFH) has had a truly awful day at work which I’ve witnessed every time I’ve walked past the (home) office. Had texts saying things like, ‘I’m going to burst into tears in this meeting in a minute.’ DH usually very stoic so unusual. I’d like to do something nice to make up for it tonight.

I’m currently cleaning the kitchen which is usually DH’s job but any suggestions on nice meals to make or a film to watch? DH doesn’t eat red meat or like white condiments (so no mayonnaise or sour cream etc) but otherwise happy to make anything. We don’t have loads of money to throw at it but I can stretch to a special home cooked meal. I’m a fair cook and can certainly follow a recipe.

Is there a lovely happy film I could suggest that anyone’s seen recently?

Me too, i was holding my breath at one stage at the end i actually jumped off the sofa so delighted my husband has not stopped jeering me since 😅
I love Eddie the Eagle - i think that is such a heart filled film
For food, i am old fashioned chicken mashed spuds veg and gravy hit the spot then if going for dessert anthing with custard - sponge crumble

Office Space is my cure for a bad day at work!

Not a film, but Ricky Gervais's cat cartoon series on Netflix is hilarious. Very sweary, which it sounds like your DH needs.

If I've had a bad day then I'm a sucker for a big dumb action film. Pacific Rim, Mad Max Fury Road, 2012, that kind of thing. Or if you want something a bit less things-that-go-fast-and-explode, I recently watched Chef and it was delightful. Although it's guaranteed to make you hungry. Or how about Scott Pilgrim?

Good shout. I think The Martian is possibly even better.

Don't know about the film, but a re watch of Shadowlands would probably go down well.

Sausage mash and onion gravy is my comfort meal!

Undertaking Betty, with Brenda Blethyn, Alfred Molina, Christopher Walken, and Lee Evans. If nowhere else, you can find it on YouTube. Meal? Maybe, a jacket potato with favorite stuffings. Broiled shrimp? Sautéed mushrooms? Does he eat cheese? What about a breakfast meal? Beans on toast?

A sad ending, but a lovely film anyway.

My go to comfort food will always be a big butchers steak but that obviously doesn’t fit the brief of no red meat 😂 (actually it’s my Friday night dinner every week!)
I also love anything with mash, really buttery mash with lots of salt and double cream too. I’d probably eat a bowl of that by itself, maybe with some onion gravy if I could be arsed to make it (I couldn’t).
Poor dh, hope you’ve found something delicious to lift the spirits, you’re a lovely person to do something nice for him, I like hearing about couples who do these things! Dh has just been looking after me so well after an operation, I feel really lucky to be so loved and I’m sure your dh will feel the same which will already make him feel better 💐

The Ballad of Wallis Island and The Holdovers are both lovely films.

Oh really? I haven’t watched it yet but I loved Hail Mary so much I’m meaning to. Was worried it won’t be as sweet and funny…

Local Hero, gentle humour.

I enjoyed watching Nobody and Nobody 2 (Bob Odenkirk) with husband and teenage son -.not normally an action film fan but there was enough dark humour, good soundtrack and cast to keep me watching. There is more recent 'Normal' film with Bob Odenkirk in on NowTV which is similar but I prefer the Nobody films.

My kids did too ha.....(and then their dad ended up making a 3d print of that faceless rock for their bedroom shelf! 😂

@afaloren I really hope that you and your husband had something comforting to eat and found a film to watch out of all the choices given. I also hope that things ease up for him in work. It sounds like it was a really difficult day for him, and having you in his corner would have really helped x

Just a little update. I made chicken sausages, cheesy mash, green veg and onion gravy. Crumble for afters. It went down a treat.

DH didn’t have time for a film as work was still crazy even later (I did manage to drag us all out for a quick dog walk) but we watched the first episode of the new season of Ludwig which was good.

Today was a much better day! I’ve had some fantastic suggestions for recipes and films to keep in my back pocket. Thank you all for being so kind!
