Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the nights are coming in earlier.

Same as other people want summer.
Autumn is the start of the best weather to come.

This. Autumn is my favourite time of year

I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

If we had crisp sunny autumn and winter days I wouldn't mind so much but the reality is months of grey, damp weather with no sun and lots of rain.

We need loads of rain given the last few months

Oooh what are fairy houses? Sounds lovely

ShiftySquirrel · 18/08/2026 22:17

It's been much more noticeable this week for me. The rest of the time it's been wall to wall sunshine and heatwave. Evening walks have been hot and still bright, almost a Mediterranean holiday vibe. A bit of cloud at twilight makes a huge difference.

Normally I'd have noticed more a couple of weeks ago with more changeable weather- we camp July/August every year.

Yes.

I have the sunrise/ sunset app for work and it’s terrifying how fast the nights close in. I have been telling people since the longest day how quickly it goes.
For me the warm, dry weather has been amazing so I can enjoy the evenings even if dark.
9 weeks until the clocks go back …

CatLady199 · 18/08/2026 22:37

Noticed the darker evenings this week. Love autumn. Really appreciate it now after the horrible summer 😩

Yes - 9pm is dusk here. Hate the thought of another long winter with months of darkness and horrible weather 😥

I am so done with the blasted heatwave. Now we need months of horrible weather to put the drought right.

Haribosweets · 18/08/2026 22:47

Love the dark evenings - especially October onwards. Love it being dark by 4.30pm and I can close the curtains and put on my oodie. I hate summer and light until 10pm. I noticed it was dark tonight around 6pm ishalthough put it down to it being cloudy. No rain though

RaraRachael · 18/08/2026 22:50

I was watching the athletics from Birmingham last week and it was really noticeable how much earlier it got darker than here - NE Scotland.

No heatwaves but at least we've still got light nights.

2026letsgo · 18/08/2026 22:54

@Haribosweets good for you. Sadly my eyes no longer work in the dark when driving.
Work allows me to leave at 4pm from the end of November if I come in earlier but with the dark mornings it’s still tough for a few weeks.
It’s not cosy, winter is hard work, dangerous and sucks all the vitamin D out of you.

Yes, I noticed and I absolutely hate it. I love the sun and the light days. In autumn and winter I feel trapped and isolated from the world with the curtains closed for most of the day and darkness outside. I love sitting outside in summer, hearing birds, children playing, people enjoying themselves. Even if I am on my own I don’t feel lonely in summer.
I also hate feeling cold and wet whenever I go out.

Loads of people take vitamin D in winter.

I am - I'm having to close the blinds and put on the lights at about 8.30pm. I'm not complaining though. I am more than ready for keeping warm on cold winter nights reading a good book!

I have enjoyed a full quota of sun this summer!

Anyone would think that different people can feel different things!
It’s fine to prefer summer. It’s fine to prefer winter. I don’t know why there’s always such a battle between the different camps though.

Solaire18381 · 18/08/2026 23:06

Yes, definitely. I have thought in the middle of the day too, the past couple of days the house seems so much darker.

Also, leaves from the massive tree in the back garden are falling. We went into B&M at the weekend and DC wanted to get some festive chocolate, yes that is out already, but probably that trend has been going on for several years now.

It's sad that we're coming to the end of summer. I do like autumn a lot, but I'm definitely a summer person.

It’s been getting darker earlier from the 21st June. Happens every year 😂😂

I can’t wait for it! Bring on the horrible weather! 3 months of boiling bollocks here and I’m done with it!

I do wonder if those who are saying they’ve enjoyed the summer have been less affected by heatwaves than those in the SE / parts of the Midlands?

Im absolutely thrilled to see the nights drawing and less heat. It’s been a long, brutal summer
