Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the nights are coming in earlier.

Yeah, as happens every year

😄 right?...
Tickled me

It doesn’t get darker (or lighter) evenly though, there are certain times of the year the change each day isn’t much, and other times when the change is more pronounced. So when people notice it, it is just that it is changing faster now than the last few weeks.

Bring autumn on! I love it!

Peakyblinder18 · 19/08/2026 01:44

What a dreary outlook some people have.

Londonnight · 19/08/2026 05:42

I hate it. I hate the long dark nights during winter. I much prefer the summer with long light days, and I have even loved the heat waves we have had this year.

MidnightPatrol · 19/08/2026 05:43

I haven’t noticed that (probably not awake late enough) - but it definitely feels darker at 5am this morning (when my baby has decided they like to start the day).

I do wonder if those who are saying they’ve enjoyed the summer have been less affected by heatwaves than those in the SE / parts of the Midlands?

Im absolutely thrilled to see the nights drawing and less heat. It’s been a long, brutal summer

Probably. Summer here has been in tge teens and mid twenties with plenty of rain. Our winters are long and hard - which is probably why I am not looking forward to the reality of them. I'm from the SE of England and they are very different down there.

princessposy · 19/08/2026 06:36

I always think the last couple of weeks of August you can see the transition to autumn really starting. I like it, it’s similar at the end of February when you can see the spring flowers coming and the evenings feel lighter.

rosie1959 · 19/08/2026 06:45

I have noticed the change certainly can’t say I am a fan of autumn and certainly not winter. The older I get the shorter spring and summer seems to be and winter drags on forever. I certainly don’t find these shorter days ‘cosy’ but definitely depressing.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 19/08/2026 06:50

I feel quite melancholy when the light evenings go. It’s a reminder that winter is on the way and it will be dark by late afternoon.

It`s not miserable weather its the best.

Absolutely. Rain is what keeps us all alive. The summer has been the worst of my life (50+ years).

Yes, I noticed and I absolutely hate it. I love the sun and the light days. In autumn and winter I feel trapped and isolated from the world with the curtains closed for most of the day and darkness outside. I love sitting outside in summer, hearing birds, children playing, people enjoying themselves. Even if I am on my own I don’t feel lonely in summer.
I also hate feeling cold and wet whenever I go out.

I feel like this in the summer. Horrible.

Bogstandardname · 19/08/2026 06:57

Dread the winter. The house is like a fridge and I can't afford to heat it properly. It has been lovely this summer moving about the house and not shivering. If.i could afford the heating, I wouldn't mind winter.

maddiemookins16mum · 19/08/2026 07:00

Really noticed it Tuesday night, came home at 8.30pm and it was almost dark! Plus the mornings too.

LlynTegid · 19/08/2026 07:00

I have noticed and especially yesterday because of clouds.

itsgettingweird · 19/08/2026 07:03

Evenings not so much but obviously it’s happening and always does!

The mornings though I’ve really noticed.

Leaving some for swim training at 5am and it’s dark!

The mornings are also noticeably darker. I’m up at 5 and the difference from just the end of last week seems quite marked all of a sudden

Yep - early riser here too and I’ve had to put lights on Grin quite a shock especially when it’s still quite warm and muggy. We did get RAIN last night though… actual proper rain

Olive42 · 19/08/2026 07:16

Yes, just this week I have noticed a marked difference with dusk at 9pm.

I like each season for different reasons.

I don’t like grey, damp Januarys when you don’t see the sun for what feels like weeks though…

sanityisamyth · 19/08/2026 07:19

Yes :(

terrifiedgran · 19/08/2026 08:18

I don't mind people liking different weather. What I object to is people saying, it's so lovely to wrap up in blankets, turn the heating up and listen to the rain on the window.

You're not IN the weather. You're celebrating the fact that you can hide from it in extreme comfort. You don't need the weather to be dreadful to do that.

I do understand that some people love a good bracing walk in the wind and rain, but that's still usually because you've got great warm accommodation to go back to after, and you're out for a limited amount of time. For those that work outside all day, or have poor/no housing its really rather different.

But it is lovely to wrap up in blankets. No point lying. Yes some people dread cold winters, but.....

But presumably you've got plenty of stuff that you need to do in your day before you do that. I'm aware this started about darker evenings, so we're more talking about (most people's) down time, but surely it's not worth the struggle and discomfort of doing whatever you do in the daytime in howling gales and sleet just so you can snuggle in the evenings.

I've not liked the heat really either, can't it be about 18 and showers every day??

MoralOrLegal · 19/08/2026 08:29

Another winter/cold/rain lover here! This summer has been awful.

I’m from the SE. The weather (and lighter days in winter) is one of the main reasons I won’t move north.

It’s the short days I hate. Roll on mid January when it’s starting to get light again.

Perfect28 · 19/08/2026 08:36

Yes, just as they have since the 21st of June...
