Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the nights are coming in earlier.

Yes, but it's almost two months since the summer solstice so it's not a surprise!

Same as other people want summer.
Autumn is the start of the best weather to come.

And what do you love about commuting for months in darkness, being stuck indoors, terrible weather, icy pavements that cause broken bones, families struggling with heating bills, higher rate of deaths from flu and respiratory illnesses, etc etc?

I just love the winter, i can go out more i love all the weather MN hates.
I feel bad for them that cant afford the heating but this is not the thread for that.

No surprise that, as we're now very nearly a third of the way between the longest day and the shortest. Two months since 21 June, four months til 21 Dec.

Everything I posted is absolutely what happens in winter. If you post about loving winter then don't be surprised if someone points out the reality of it for many people - and even more so in this financial climate when hospitals are struggling, councils are having to cut back on gritting and care services, and families are struggling already without high fuel bills. Lovely that you go outside - so do I with my dog - but I'm also well aware of the impact of winter tgat lasts for months.

I noticed it seemed much darker earlier tonight on my dog walk. I do love it though. Autumn and winter are my favourite seasons

I know it happens every year, its just nice to see it.

I love the lighter nights; it makes me sad when it gets darker earlier.

strawberrymatcha22 · 18/08/2026 21:47

I love it! It was hell back when we had extreme heat and the sun wasn’t going down until 10pm…

pendatea · 18/08/2026 21:47

Yes I'm in Scotland and it's getting notably dark by about 9pm now and there is a change in the atmosphere, the summer pomp is over and things are going to seed and autumn feels very much around the corner. Feels like only yesterday it was still light at almost midnight!

It`s the best time of the year.

No it isn't. It really isn't.

I know it happens every year, its just nice to see it.

No it isn't. I miss being able to spend late evenings pottering in my garden.

ElegantDress · 18/08/2026 21:50

Yes, bloody depressing isn’t it. I don’t like the extreme heat but would be happy with 18 hours of daylight all year round.

Are you new to how seasons work?

inkgirl · 18/08/2026 21:54

Yes, pretty sure it means summer is ending

Jaimelefromage · 18/08/2026 21:55

Yes, because they are. Longest day is 21st June, and from then it progressively gets darker earlier until the shortest day on 21st Dec. Happens every year, have you never noticed it before?

Of course I`ve noticed it, but more so tonight.

Yes - definitely noticed this last night when it was raining. Starting to feel very Autumnal today.

It`s not miserable weather its the best.

I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

If we had crisp sunny autumn and winter days I wouldn't mind so much but the reality is months of grey, damp weather with no sun and lots of rain.

I love a wet damp rainy cold rough day.
In-fact i sleep better with really rough weather going on.
