Is Glasgow a safe place to live?

My DD has recently moved to Glasgow for a job. She is shocked at how rough it seems, and there is a programme on iplayer which is on later tonight on player about Glasgow which was filmed recently. It's really shocking. She is living alone in a not particularly nice area and I am really worried. For people who have experience of Glasgow, please tell me your thoughts.

I’d say most places yes. I worked in govanhill for a time though and you couldn’t pay me enough to live there.

Like everywhere it has its good and bad areas.

But overall I lived there for 15 years in and around Glasgow and never experienced anything worse than noisy neighbours. Though it’s definitely gone down hill big time the last decade or so.

Hugely area dependent, I moved here 10 years ago and have rarely felt any sort of fear, other than walking through town late at night etc. Where is she?

oscillatora · 17/08/2026 21:19

The east end is very dangerous and the city centre is but other than that it’s fine. London is much more dangerous. Best city in the UK to live

weareallqueens · 17/08/2026 21:19

I’m raising my kids here and I’m ok with it. There are places I’d not hang about on my own at night but I’m sure the same is true of any big city. Where there is poverty there’s anti social behaviour and people who enjoy taking advantage of it for their own ends.

They used to say: “Don’t worry, they only murder their friends.”

She works in the city centre, and there have been rapes there apparently.

Oh God, she is living in the East End.

There is a documentary on iplayer right now suggesting it's not at the moment. I'm a Glaswegian and I avoid the town centre these days having been mugged and sexually assaulted on union street just outside the station in recent years. Having said that I also witnessed a stabbing outside central years ago but it's bad right now and the town is generally just a mess at the moment although they are working of improving it.

Ioafed · 17/08/2026 21:26

No worse than other UK cities. I know it reasonably well and would genuinely like to live there (were it not for the weather...).

West end is lovely. It’s much safer than London

Sodthesystem · 17/08/2026 21:27

Used to be able to walk home barefoot and alone in the city centre at three in the morning without any issue but wouldn’t do it now.

Funnily enough i lived in London briefly and my parents were worried sick but i was in the posher parts and i felt far safer there than i did in the last place i lived in Glasgow. Not to say i felt unsafe in the last place, i just didn’t really go out after 10pm if I could avoid it.

She will be fine op. Just like anywhere, keep your wits about you and stay where it’s well lit. Yes there are dodgy people around but the thing with Glasgow is there’s lots of good folk who will help folk too.

Starrylawn · 17/08/2026 21:28

Glasgow has a significantly higher rape and sexual assault rate than London. However, that doesn’t mean they’re stranger assaults. Can she not move to a nicer area? Thousands of students manage to live safely there. I visited once and thought it was a nice city!

Is Glasgow a safe place to live?
LoyalGoldMentor · 17/08/2026 21:28

My favourite city. Media often portray the less impressive side of life. I think like any area we should be aware of our surroundings and personal safety. I'm sure she will settle in well and enjoy the very best of Glasgow and the west coast

Starrylawn · 17/08/2026 21:29

I’m not sure people realise but London is one of the safest major cities in the world!!

True the west end and many other areas are fine and even if you are in central and go through the four corners you will probably be fine and maybe see a few loose canons but not be harmed but the city centre has gone down hill in recent years that is undeniable and worth knowing.

Purplecatshopaholic · 17/08/2026 21:32

Glasgow is an awesome city. But it is a city, with good bits, bad bits and in between. I lived there for years and loved it. I wouldn’t wander alone round the city centre at night, but I wouldn’t do that anywhere. The nice areas are lovely, the less lovely areas are, well, less lovely. She just needs to take the sensible precautions we all take when living in a city.

Shmodipshit · 17/08/2026 21:32

I lived in the merchant city, a couple minutes walk from George Square, and absolutely loved it.
My boyfriend currently lives in Garnethill, and there can be some rough folk about, but never had any problems. Really, the issues are amongst themselves. They’re not really going for anyone just walking about.

There is rape in every city. Doesn’t really make a difference being in Glasgow.

I wouldn’t live in the east end, tell her to move to a nicer part of the city.

Shloopie · 17/08/2026 21:33

I mean the Dennistoun part of the East End is hipster central these days, so not all parts of the East End are 'dangerous'.

If she's young and new to the city maybe she'd be better off in a flat share in the West End rather than living solo in the East End.

awaynboilyurheid · 17/08/2026 21:37

The west end of Glasgow is full of students, it has lovely cafes restaurants, the botanic gardens and safer than city centre
Rents are higher but thats the reason, perhaps your daughter could look at renting there?
Glaswegians are generally friendly people but the city has been deteriorating under the SNP council , it needs money spent on it but unfortunately the council spend on the wrong things.

Sodthesystem · 17/08/2026 21:37

Realistically in the more traditionally rough areas, boys would be more a at risk than girls anyway. If you see some jumped up wee Fanny’s in a ‘gang’ going around then, as a woman they probably aren’t going to start on you anyway.

ny20005 · 17/08/2026 21:37

I’ve lived in Glasgow over 20 years & love it. Like others said, every city has not so good areas & I wouldn’t be in city centre on my own at night but I’d be the same in London. It’s a great place to live

AgnesMcDoo · 17/08/2026 21:38

Like any city they are lovely bits and rough bits.

It’s much the same as any other city.

I agree with all of this.

Less safe than Edinburgh
