Have stayed at an adults only hotel before? Do they tend to be full of gumpy people?

Or have you had a positive experience with it

OP posts:

I know exactly what you mean. When I became child free on holidays, going to an adult only place seemed strange because I didn’t find having kids around to be such a chore. Anyway, it’s just like going out of season, I guess.

It's not though. Out of season you get pre schoolers. There's no escape unless you go adults only!

dh280125 · 17/08/2026 21:48

Sure - generally a good experience though clearly the crown can be older. No more though - got an 8 year old now!

I like having kids around, personally, and wouldn’t feel the need to escape from a few little ones. I’m well past the age of having g young children around but I really love to hear them having a good time. But my pint is, I didn’t find adult only “grumpy”.

earlyshirley · 17/08/2026 23:16

Whether it’s grumpy or gumpy not sure why the OP would assume adults only hotels are full of the perpetually miserable or indeed, the obese.
Either way they haven’t been back to clarify

Ok but not everyone is like you.

Yeah, hence the “personally”.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 18/08/2026 07:14

We chose AO for our honeymoon as we had to go in August, and honestly wanted relaxing rather than kids pop by the pool. (Mexico)

No swingers, no grumpiness,... just people wanting similar. Quite a few teachers!

The other time was when we were upgraded (for free) to the hotel we had booked's Sistsr hotel, which was AO. (Cyprus). We were only there 2 nights. It was a lovely unexpected break, as our own kids (3&5yos) were with their grandparents.

Marroon · 18/08/2026 07:15

I don’t really understand why you think hotels without children would be full of grumpy people.

BEAchDays2 · 18/08/2026 07:16

Why would there be grumpy people?

DanielaHobbs · 18/08/2026 07:18

I only ever go to adults only resorts . Obviously it depends on the price but those I visited have been true BLISS! I found fellow guests very discrete , polite and respectful. People that enjoy calm and couples time.

Ginmonkeyagain · 18/08/2026 10:12

loveawineloveacrisp · 17/08/2026 15:04

Why do some people think that couples who go to adults only hotels are all swingers FFS? Maybe they just don't want noisy kids ruining their peace.

I assumed adults only hotel was a sex thing because it has never really occurred to me that a normal hotel that banned children would be a thing. Sure there are hotels that are more suited to adults and couples - either because of price or location - but actually banning families and children? Never really come across it.

I assume that is because we don't tend to have holidays that centre around hotels as the destination, for us they are just a place to sleep, wash and dump our stuff so I couldn't really care less who else is staying there as long as they are broadly housetrained.

CrushingOnRubies · 18/08/2026 11:51

Currently in a 14+ hotel and it’s bliss. No screaming kids, no excessive splashing at the pool, no running around at the breakfast buffet. No harassed looking parents arguing with kids to put sun cream on. Everyone is very relaxed enjoying a holiday.

It’s still August so it’s very much teachers who are back at work in a couple of weeks or those who work in education.

Well that's a strange assumption to make.

Why is it so hard to believe that people going to a resort to relax and unwind might not want to be surrounded by noisy children?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/08/2026 11:57

Naurrr · 17/08/2026 12:55

Can you explain why you think a childfree hotel would be grumpy?
The bliss of no kid noise would make for more happiness.

I suspect @GreenCandies is stereotyping everyone who doesn't want to be around children as miserable, grumpy types, @Naurrr. She (wrongly) thinks it isn't possible to be happy unless there are children around.

People like different sorts of holidays. Sometimes one person likes different sorts of holidays. I like holidays where the accommodation is just somewhere to sleep, wash and store my stuff and I spend the rest of the time out and about doing something or exploring. Sometimes I also like holidays where I don’t plan to do much other than eat, read, and snooze, so for those holidays I like a really nice hotel with pleasant decor; good food and good staff and ideally no small children.

The original poster of this bloody stupid question hasn't bothered coming back.

Marroon · 18/08/2026 13:26

Posters claiming adults only means a swinging hotel just have really lost the plot. I mean honestly, how narrow must your world be to think that?

What an utterly bizarre assumption to make. Having worked in travel for decades I can assure you with some confidence that adults only hotels are a thing, they always have been, they’re found almost all over the world in all styles and budgets and finally they are not some kind of grotty hangouts for swingers!

PropertyD · 18/08/2026 18:34

They are fab. No screaming kids, no kids in restaurants where they cause chaos, no breakfast buffets where the kids poke their fingers into all sorts. No early waking and parents doing performance parenting.

What isn’t there to like?

When we were having our IVF treatments (many) or after another of my recurrent miscarriages and just wanted to escape to a warm place to ‘get over it’ do you think I wanted to be surrounded by other people’s babies and children in a ‘here’s what you could have won’ fashion? No, we booked adult only hotels to escape it. But yeah, it was ‘a sex thing’!

TheChosenTwo · 19/08/2026 08:18

Dh and I take a holiday without our children every year (we also take holidays WITH our children every year, they are mostly all adults now!).
Once we booked adults only without realising. It wasn’t full of grumpy adults, there was a wide range of people getting pissed at breakfast and passing out IN the pool by 1pm, party vibes, adults like dh and I who were there to read our books, swim and chill out for a few hours at the beach or by the pool and everything inbetween.
we prefer a family hotel generally because it’s a bit more consistent with the types of people. But we do always take these trips outside of school holiday season and there aren’t hoardes of kids, mostly little ones.
of course there are also grumpy families from time to time.
I would advise just booking a hotel you like the look of that fits your criteria (be that location, availability of trips etc) and just going and enjoying your own holiday rather than trying to predict the mood of the other guests!

LemonSnail · 19/08/2026 08:23

I’d never link adult only with swingers etc, it’s pretty common sense the hotels are for adults who don’t want to be surrounded by hundreds of DC jumping in the pool or listen to a mini disco.
When I’ve been to them, I always go in August there are a lot of teachers there.

Rocknrollstar · 19/08/2026 08:56

DD and I always stay at Adults only hotels. We haven’t recovered from the nightmare of accidentally booking a hotel with families five years ago. We find the other holiday makers to be very friendly and keen to chat. Go and sit in the bar and people will talk to you. Ask to share a table on the patio in the evening. We have some really good friends we met by accident when they asked to share our table. Our experience is that some people will want peace and quiet and keep themselves to themselves but if you want to meet people and have fun it is there for the asking. Or you start it - I’m always the first on the dance floor even if, as DD always says, there isn’t actually a dance floor..
