Have stayed at an adults only hotel before? Do they tend to be full of gumpy people?

Or have you had a positive experience with it

I choose adults only because I have very low tolerance of other people’s children.

I am not grumpy on holiday 😊

The Lanzarote one sounds like it would have made for a great holiday! Was there lots of singalongs followed by snoozes, then a nice cup of tea?

Think more a pint of Prosecco with breakfast and then a dance around the pool

Anything for ‘adults only’ gives me swinger vibes. Are swingers grumpy?

Me too 😂Although I would 100% love an adult only hotel, no swinging, just a decent lie in and to get away from my children

Imaginedragons84 · 17/08/2026 13:37

Dh and I have holidayed in quite a few adult only hotels since our kids have grown up. I often have to take holidays during the school holidays so peak time for kids everywhere.
We've had a really mix of ages usually, though stayed in one in Cyprus that was definitely on the older side - like shower chairs in the bathroom and the entertainment was bingo, 60's singers and bowls.
Have often done all inclusive and the buffets are much nicer without kids sticking fingers in everything and dropping food everywhere.
Entertainment tends to be much more laid back - a singer, pianist, maybe a quiz night.
We like a bit of evening entertainment laid on and it tends to be better at family hotels, so have done a couple of holidays that have adults only pools, a bar and a restaurant.
If you holiday in the middle to latter part of September family hotels tend to have only a few babies/toddlers due to the schools havinh only just gone back.
I have never stayed in a hotel that has swinger vibes!

We visit a 5 star adult only hotel small hotel in Greece. No swinging. No evening entertainment.
Just excellent food and drink, plenty of space, private beach.

I would actually prefer grumpy swingers to a load of DC jumping in the pool. I loved family holidays when my DC were younger but I’m over the noise now.

loopyloolou · 17/08/2026 14:15

If you are talking warners the average age seems to be 80, and not the cheeriest !

AgnesX · 17/08/2026 14:20

Did you bring in your kids OP? Maybe that had something to do with your experience lol

Ok so pretty much like I was age 19! Admiring their vitality! Sounds fun really.

This thread is making me want to book an adults only holiday! I actually hadnt considered I could escape from family vibes and noise. Sounds lovely.

Oh, this tread has solved a mystery for me! Bar the odd spa or country house break, we tend to stay in city/town centre hotels we really just use to sleep, wash and maybe eat breakfast - no pools, entertainment, bars etc.. so had not really come across this us.

However, I was actually on Bookign.com yesterday looking for a hotel for an autumn city break in a European and a couple of hotels were billed as "adults only" I assumed they were hotels for people with ... umm ... particular interests.

Be careful staying at an adult only hotel OP, and do your research first...

My brother and his wife went to Mexico on holiday, to an adults only hotel.

Turned out it wasn't simply 'adult only', it was a Swingers Hotel.

They spent the whole 2 weeks trying to avoid speaking to anyone at all, because they kept being 'propositioned' by other guests 😂

They came home feeling a lot worse than they'd felt before the holiday, and my brother says he's 'still scarred' by it 😂

loveawineloveacrisp · 17/08/2026 15:04

Why do some people think that couples who go to adults only hotels are all swingers FFS? Maybe they just don't want noisy kids ruining their peace.

Waitingfordoggo · 17/08/2026 15:15

DH and I have stayed in Adult-Only hotels in the Canaries twice recently. They were very nice experiences- not having the noise of small children around was really lovely (nothing against small children; I once had a couple myself).

No one was grumpy- quite the opposite. If anything, some people were a bit too sociable- great for my DH who likes to chat to anyone and everyone; less good for me who likes to keep myself to myself (On reflection, it looks like I’m the grumpy one, so yes, you might find some grumpy people in AO, but most are not).

Whosthetabbynow · 17/08/2026 15:16

Adults only in Barbados and Lanzarote. Bloody lovely.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 17/08/2026 15:20

I've only been to an Adults only resort once. I probably looked grumpy but I can't help it, I've got RBF. As far as I could tell the general vibe was relaxed.

It's a really odd thing to say. Either they've not travelled much or it's kids posting on the wind up.

I've stayed in a few adult only hotels and there were couples, but also lots of women with friends, sisters/daughters, or solo. Nothing remotely swingery (if that's a word) about them.

EverythingIsComputer · 17/08/2026 15:24

Have done in Corfu, it was great

To be fair, I went to a Sandals in the Caribbean once and there were defo some swinging shenanigans going on there. DH and I kept to ourselves! Didn’t see any evidence of it at the Canaries AO hotels though.

Naurrr · 17/08/2026 15:31

Considering the volume of threads on here every summer where posters are shocked that their kid doesn't like being overstimulated, too warm, in a new environment and how it's the 'same shit, different location', it's very clear where the grumpy people are 😄

TallSturdyGirls · 17/08/2026 18:03

KimWexlersPonyTail · 17/08/2026 11:53

That's because I am not on holiday currently

I feel your pain. I have another 11 months to grump out.

IsItWickedNotToCare · 17/08/2026 18:06

I'm grumpy and I love adult only hotels, no children, what's not to like?

Leo800 · 17/08/2026 18:09

No, they’re bliss. No kids, no annoying parents shouting. Lovely & peaceful.

FairKoala · 17/08/2026 18:45

Why is everyone saying grumpy when the title reads Gumpy I.e obese

Bjorkdidit · 17/08/2026 19:01

Maybe because no-one except you uses gumpy as a synonym for obese? I've never heard of it as a word meaning anything tbh. I think we're all assuming its a typo.

Irritatedinthisheat · 17/08/2026 19:04

Why would obese people be more likely to go to adult only hotel. It’s a typo.
