Anyone remember more of the 'you are not it' rhymes from school days in the 80s?
I know we had lots of different ones we used to use, but cant remember what any of them were!

Inky pink ponky, my mother's donkey (I can't remember the rest)

Iona and Peter Opie made a study of this kind of rhyme in the 60s and 70s. There were lots of regional variations including, once you've established who is doing the chasing, do you call them It, He or something else? Are they just called 'it' or are they 'on it'? I find this kind of thing fascinating.

My mother and your mother
We're hanging out clothes
My mother gave your mother
A punch on the nose
What colour was the blood?

Person "blood" landed on chooses a colour, colour is spelt out, the person the last letter lands on is out.

Each, peach, pear, plum,
something? Something, bubble gum.

Can anyone remember?

We SE Londoners said patata!

I taught in SE London for a while. Do you mean said like 'patayter' rather than 'patarter'? In that case we said that in Berkshire where I grew up rather than saying 'potato' in a very refined way.

123
mother caught a flea
put it in the teapot and made a cup of tea
flea jumped out
mother gave a shout
down came father with his shirt hanging out

HelenaWilson · 17/08/2026 12:21

Five potato, six potato, seven potato MORE' There was probably more ....

We used to finish with O-U-T spells OUT.

Everyone held two fists out and one fist was counted out each round.

It took so long the bell would have gone before you established who was IT.

Munchie1965 · 17/08/2026 12:30

I guess these are from the late sixties early seventies

Yum yum bubble gum
stick it up your mothers bum
when its brown take it down
yum yum bubble gum!

Made you look made you stare
made your mother cut your hair
cut it long
cut it short
cut it with a knife and fork

What's the time ?
half past nine
put your knickers on the line
when the copper comes along
hurry up and put them on

Youllnevergetabetterbitofbutteronyourknife · 17/08/2026 12:31

Another one is:
There's a party in the woods, can you come?
Bring your own cup and saucer and your own cream bun
Who is your best friend?
Brenda.
Brenda will be there with a ribbon in her hair, what colour will it be?
Yellow
Y.E.L.L.O.W
And out you must go because my mother said so 😂

Love it! Brings back so many memories of the carefree days in the playground.

I'm old enough to have heard the original 'Eeny teeny miny mo' at school which my parents told me not to say (early 1960s). The less offensive version was 'Eeny meeny miny mo put the baby on the po. When he's done wipe his bum. Eeny Meeny Miny Mo'.

Also ' One potato, two potato, three potato four. Five potato, six potato, seven potato MORE' There was probably more but it's actually quite boring and the word 'potato' starts to look weird the more you type it.

I was at school in the 80s and the original eeny meeny mini mo was still about then.

youngestisapsycho · 17/08/2026 12:47

These are all great... many memories! 😍

My ex (a bit older than me and I'm in my 40s) said they used to sing;

'Willie was a Watchdog sitting onthe grass
Along came a bee and stung him up the ...
ask no questions tell no lies, I saw a dirty man playing with his flies
Are funny, flies are silly, I saw a (black!) man playing with his
Willie was a watchdog sitting on the grass....." Continues forever I suppose...

Edited

We had a variation on this:

Mary had a little lamb, she thought him rather silly
She threw him by the left leg and caught him by the…
Willie was a watchdog sitting on the grass
Along came a bumblebee and stung him on the…
Ask no questions, tell no lies
i saw a policeman doing up his…
Flies are a nuisance, bugs are worse
And that is the end of my sweet country verse

Also, does anyone else remember “There was an old lady of 92, who did a fart and missed the loo”? It’s really long so not going to type it all out, but we used to sing it all the time at Brownies!

Munchie1965 · 17/08/2026 13:09

I got another one. It was used in a YA drama in the 80s called "Going out" but I also think I remember it from the 70s especially the last line.

When Susie was a baby,
a baby Susie was
and she said ga ga a ga ga ga

When Susie was a schoolgirl
a schoolgirl Susie was
and she said ooh miss I cant do this

When Susie was a teenager
a teenager she was
and she said ooh aah I lost my bra I left my knickers in my boyfriends car

Aaah - this thread has unlocked some childhood memories!

I remember the original eeny meany miny mo one - and also was innocent enough at the time to have no idea it was offensive.

We said this but it was a clapping rhyme where you stood opposite another girl in the playground and slapped hands with each other, rather than a 'Who's it?' choice.
