Anyone remember more of the 'you are not it' rhymes from school days in the 80s?
I know we had lots of different ones we used to use, but cant remember what any of them were!

I got another one. It was used in a YA drama in the 80s called "Going out" but I also think I remember it from the 70s especially the last line.

When Susie was a baby,
a baby Susie was
and she said ga ga a ga ga ga

When Susie was a schoolgirl
a schoolgirl Susie was
and she said ooh miss I cant do this

When Susie was a teenager
a teenager she was
and she said ooh aah I lost my bra I left my knickers in my boyfriends car

Edited

We used to sing 'When Susie was a baby, she used to go like this 'Ga ga ga ga ga ga' etc etc

I’m crying laughing! The boy who lived next door to me sung this. Memory unlocked. How did all us young kids cross the UK know these horrible, nonsensical rhymes?!

ThatBliddyWoman · 17/08/2026 14:58

Who remembers;

'He said that he loved her but oh how he lied (action demonstrating nose growth) oh how he lied, oh how he lied

He sat on her tombstone and laughed 'til he cried (Ha!Ha!) laughed til he cried, laughed 'til he cried (Ah, Ha)

He went to the funeral just for the ride (beep beep) just for the ride, (beep beep) just for the ride....

And at the end of each line, you'd sing 'um pick a pick, um pick a pick, um pick a pick flick' while demonstrating picking one's nose and flicking the bogey.

Kids are horrible, aren't they?!😆

We were incredibly feral at primary school. Think, fights every day between boys and girls, the worst swearing you've ever heard, Alsatians let loose in the playground, and just everything being really politically incorrect. People today would be beside themselves.

Funny then how my secondary school was a total 180, deeply Christian, "you are ladies and you must behave like it when you are going to and from school".

DeftGoldHedgehog · 17/08/2026 15:20

Ip dip,
my blue ship
Sailing on the water
Like a cup and saucer
My mum-says-it-must-not-be-you-so-it-must-be-YOU.

Thanks, I've not thought about that for 40 years.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 17/08/2026 15:22

In 1966, the Queen pulled down her knicks. She licked her bum, and said "Yum yum! It's better than Weetabix!"

We were not Royalists.

somekindofdoughnut · 17/08/2026 15:23

Wow, this is literally the first time I've ever heard the sweary version. Obviously growing up in forces married quarters was a sheltered life!

Munchie1965 · 17/08/2026 15:26

Hatty65 · 17/08/2026 14:04

We said this but it was a clapping rhyme where you stood opposite another girl in the playground and slapped hands with each other, rather than a 'Who's it?' choice.

Indeed and that's how they showed at the beginning of "Going out" two girls doing the rhyme and hand slapping.🙂

Do kids still do that sort of thing these days I wonder.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 17/08/2026 15:31

My DDs did 10+ years ago.

Yes I remember that one

Whenwillitrainagain · 17/08/2026 16:09

My dad taught me this one:
Oh dear, what can the matter be?
Two old ladies sat on the lavatory.
They sat there from Friday to Saturday.
What were they doing in there?

One lady's name was Elizabeth Carter
She was a terrible farter
She sat down and played Moonlight Sonata and nobody knew she was there.

My mum had this one;

'There was a young man called Trent
Whose dick was incredibly bent
He got into trouble 'cause he stuck it in double and instead of coming he went'.

Wipeywipey · 17/08/2026 17:36

We did loads - Cici My Playmate, Bow Legged Chicken, one about sitting in a back of a car and boys go "kiss kiss, girls go woo!" and flashing pants at the end. I think those E numbers in Panda Pops probably did have a lot to answer for...

Cici my playmate, I cannot play with you, because I've got the flu, chickenpox and measles too
Slide down the drainpipe, into the Captains cabin
We shall be joyful, forever more more, shut that door, don't come back 'till half past four

The women in my "Oh Dear What Can The Matter Be" we always STUCK in the lavatory. Gave me the fear of being locked in as a kid!

Bow legged chicken seems to be a niche one no one else seems to have heard of (probably for good reason):
I'm a bow legged chicken, I'm a knock-kneed hen,
Never been so unhappy since I don't know when,
I walk with a wiggle and a waggle and a when,
Doing the Chinese wig-wog (!)

Was taught to me by my Chinese friend I hasten to add!

Holymolymoon · 17/08/2026 17:52

We found out who our friends fancied:

there's a party on the hill would you like to come?
bring your own cup and saucer and your own cream bun
can't afford it
then bring your true love one

name a boy, everyone laughs, then the name is spelled out to find out who is it.

Netcurtainnelly · 17/08/2026 18:28

Mary the .aid of the mountain glen amused herself with a fountain pen. The top came off the ink ran wild, and she gave birth to a blue black child.
They called the bastard Steven, they called the bastard Steven cos that was the name of the ink.

Stevens ink.
