Anyone remember more of the 'you are not it' rhymes from school days in the 80s?
I know we had lots of different ones we used to use, but cant remember what any of them were!

Up or down up or down i don't care if the school falls down they'll be no more English no more french no more sitting on the old school bench

Also my friend Billy had a 10 foot willy and he showed it to the girl next door. She thought it was a snake so she hit it with a rake and now its only five foot 4.

Was in primary school in early 80s birmingham

CherryogDog · 17/08/2026 19:19

Anyone remember playing "two balls" against the wall?
We'd chant "PK penny a packet, first you lick it then you small it, then you stick it to your jacket, PK penny a packet".
Then there was "Titsalina bumsquash, big banana feet, went to the pictures and fell through the seat. When the picture started, Titsalina farted, Titsalina bumsquash, big banana feet"

Oh my god, I’m laughing so much!!! I think these songs must be universal across the world.

I remember some of these, slightly different wording though (I’m 46, from the ME and went to International schools out there, then boarding school when I came to UK at 10yrs old):

ip dip dog shit (I got caught singing that and got told off A LOT!!)

cici my playmate

the last couple of lines of Susie was a baby (ooh ah lost my bra, left my knickers in my boyfriend’s car)

my brother Jimmy had a ten foot willy

mary had a little lamb, she thought it rather silly, she threw it up into the air and caught it by its…Willy was a sheepdog…

we break up, we break down, we don’t care the school falls down…

there was an old woman of 92, parlez vous, there was an woman of 92, parlez vous, there was an old woman of 92, did a fart and missed the loo, inky pinky parlez vous…

yum yum bubblegum..

I loved the limerick about Trent

We used to sing 'When Susie was a baby, she used to go like this 'Ga ga ga ga ga ga' etc etc

On reflection I think that was right - you have a better memory than me 🙂

Cici my playmate, I cannot play with you, because I've got the flu, chickenpox and measles too
Slide down the drainpipe, into the Captains cabin
We shall be joyful, forever more more, shut that door, don't come back 'till half past four

The women in my "Oh Dear What Can The Matter Be" we always STUCK in the lavatory. Gave me the fear of being locked in as a kid!

Bow legged chicken seems to be a niche one no one else seems to have heard of (probably for good reason):
I'm a bow legged chicken, I'm a knock-kneed hen,
Never been so unhappy since I don't know when,
I walk with a wiggle and a waggle and a when,
Doing the Chinese wig-wog (!)

Was taught to me by my Chinese friend I hasten to add!

We used to say-

I'm a one legged chicken only got one leg
Never been so happy since I don't know when
I walk with a giggle and a wiggle and a squawk
Doing the French dance, wigwam!

Potatoelephant · 18/08/2026 08:36

A bottle of ink went down the sink
how many miles did it go
(The kid the go landed on picked a number between one and ten, you counted around again and the kid the last number landed on was out)

ip dip dog shit you are not it

the original eenie meenie money mo.

“oh ah I lost my bra, I left my knickers in my boyfriend car” was the end of a clapping song but the beginning was “under the bramble bushes down by the sea. I can’t remember the middle bit

another clapping song was “ce ce my darling, come out and play with me” That one had slide down the drain pipe and through the cellar door.

we used to have skipping songs to, loved skipping in primary school with a big long rope, sometimes 2.

Northern Ireland, late 70s / early 80s

Ip dip doo, the cat's got flu,
the dogs got chickenpox and out goes you

Catholic school, we obviously were too scared to swear

We used:

Cat's got the measles, dog's got the flu, chicken's got the chicken pox and so have you

Another one is:
There's a party in the woods, can you come?
Bring your own cup and saucer and your own cream bun
Who is your best friend?
Brenda.
Brenda will be there with a ribbon in her hair, what colour will it be?
Yellow
Y.E.L.L.O.W
And out you must go because my mother said so 😂

Love this! But we had a local (Lancashire) variation:

There's a party on the hill, can you come?
Yes.
Bring your own bread and butter and your own cream bun.
Can't afford it.
Who is your best friend?
Sarah.
Sarah will be there with a ribbon in her hair and what colour shall it be?
Blue.
B.L.U.E. spells blue and that means you are not IT!

Yamyamabroad · 18/08/2026 08:56

Under the oak Tree,
Under the Sea
Boom, boom ,boom
True love for you my darling
True love for me
And when we marry
We'll raise a family
Under the shade of the old oak tree
Boom, boom, boom, boom
Esso blue, I love you

Not sure if it was an oak tree and the Esso bit might have been a later addition! Seventies, West Midlands

It was 'under the bramble bush' where I was and went into a whole other clapping rhyme at the end that I think was from America, about meeting your boyfriend at a candy store, he bought me ice cream, bought me cake, brought me home with a belly ache... and so on.

Ip dip thruppany bit
You are not it
Not because you're dirty
Not because you're clean
Not because my mother says you are the Fairy Queen.
O-U-T spells out and out you must go.

I'm fairly sure our line after 'clean' was about 'show your knickers to the football team.'

Similar:
Skinny Malink Malogen legs
Big banana feet
Went to the pictures
And couldn't get a seat
When the pictures started
Old Malink farted
Skinny Malink Malogen legs
Big banana feet

I went to a Chinese restaurant,
To buy a loaf of bread bread bread
They wrapped it up in a five pound note and this is what they said said said.

My name is L I L I chickell I chickell I
Birds in the orchard
Fall dead.

This evolved to be

My name is Elvis presley, girls are sexy
Sitting in the back seat drinking Pepsi
Birds in the orchard
Fall dead

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 18/08/2026 10:07

My great gran used to have a skipping one that went:

As I was in the kitchen doing a bit of stitching,
In came a bogeyman and chased me out
As I was in the parlour eating bread and banana,
In came a bogeyman and chased me out.

Our first verse was the same, second verse was 'Aina Chain-na chicken and a Cane-a boom boom chopsticks back sticks OUT.

I have no idea why.

Jingle Bells Batmen smells Robin flew away, Batman lost his underpants on the motorway...

Wow - it is almost as if kids were playing Chinese whispers with this one! Amazing how so many of them survive verbatim across the country though.

My ex (a bit older than me and I'm in my 40s) said they used to sing;

'Willie was a Watchdog sitting onthe grass
Along came a bee and stung him up the ...
ask no questions tell no lies, I saw a dirty man playing with his flies
Are funny, flies are silly, I saw a (black!) man playing with his
Willie was a watchdog sitting on the grass....." Continues forever I suppose...

Edited

We used to say that one. I think Brandon flowers must have done as well (Mr Brightside)

Ip dip,
my blue ship
Sailing on the water
Like a cup and saucer
My mum-says-it-must-not-be-you-so-it-must-be-YOU.

Thanks, I've not thought about that for 40 years.

I was looking for this one. We did “ip dip dip, my blue ship, sailing on the water, like a cup and saucer, O-U-T spells OUT!”

I was at school in the 80s and the original eeny meeny mini mo was still about then.

Same. Me and my husband recoiled in horror the other day when we were talking about this subject and realised we think kids were saying it at primary then!

That's an actual song isn't it? Lyrics altered slightly but it's a song. Tennessee wig walk. Lena zavaroni covered it, so kids in the 70s would have heard it on telly.

NancyBlackettt · 18/08/2026 22:53

What about… “Salt, pepper, scooby dooby doo, the boys go “Mwah!” and the girls go “Oooh!” ”

or

“All the girls in Spain wash their knickers in champagne,
All the boys in France do the hula hula dance,
And the dance they do is enough to tie a shoe,
And the shoe they tie is enough to tell a lie,
And the lie they tell is enough to ring a bell,
And the bell they ring goes DING A LING A LING!”

Up above the streets and houses
Bungle's flying high
Opens up his hairy arse
And shits in Zippy's eye
