Anyone else just had the wildfire alert on their phone? It scared me to death. There are no wildfires round here that I know of.

OP posts:

We had it in Welsh. Had no idea what it
said.

RedToothBrush · 14/08/2026 22:46

I had it twice!

iPhoneTo opt out:

  1. Go to your settings and select the ‘notifications’ menu.
  2. Scroll to the bottom.
  3. Turn off ‘severe alerts’ and ‘extreme alerts’.
Marstwix · 14/08/2026 22:48

Yes twice. It was terrifying and I had to calm my DS down as he got the fright of his life then was perplexed why the government would use such a frightening alert system.

Yes, I got it and so has everyone I have spoken to.

I did see another thread about it a few minutes ago, but refrained from posting on it, because the OP of the thread started the thread with a silly gif, and proceeded to post another one when someone suggested something to her. Constant use of gifs really annoys me.

So I'm posting on this thread instead.

First emergency alert we've got since the 'practice' ones. These wildfires are getting serious, so I'm not surprised to have got it. A few posters - on that other thread - said they're going to switch off their notifications on their phone, as they feel 'infantilised' by the alert. LMFAO! 😂 How pathetic. They need to get a grip. It's the first one we've had! How do these people cope with real life?

Imagine that that all these people switching off alerts, jumping out of their skin and nearly crashing their cars are a certain type. Probably the same ones that dont answer their door, dont answer their phone and are terrified to go out a walk on their own.

Orangebadger · 14/08/2026 22:55

yes but my neighbours clearly didn’t as they sparked up a BBQ and have candles going in the garden now!

ProfessionalPirate · 14/08/2026 22:59

Well I’m switching my alerts off - just had the fourth one of the day and this one bloody woke me up - I was trying to get an early night after a really tough week. 🤬

Why would a gas BBQ be a risk?

Really? Do you really think there is no risk of a gas bbq setting something on fire? Have a think about it.

I couldn't be further from the person you're describing but of course a sudden extremely loud sound when driving is hoing to be distracting.

I can only conclude that different phones made different noises, I can't imagine anyone not being affected by the noise mine made. Clearly I need to buy some kind of soundproof handbag in case it happens again

I don't think any servuce had pre warning though?

I did think bout all the parents trying to settle children for bed at 7pm too 😣

The point is anyone with a hidden phone will have been advised by any service they are in contact with how to turn off alerts. It has also been brought up hundreds of time in threads all over the Internet every time there is an alert. It is simple to switch off if you want to.

I don't understand why drivers were affected by it? Your phone should be no where near you.

My phone is sitting in the centre console of the car charging wirelessly when im driving. It is literally 12 inches from the steering wheel.

Nope, it is a preset alarm sound that you cant override. If a loud noise is enough for someone to be so distracted or startled that they crash their car then they should not be driving.

Lunalara · 14/08/2026 23:15

Problem is that with the weather being this severe, you need to know if a fire has become an issue in your area as soon as possible.

It's all okay now, she took them for a bubble bath 🛁

Saving the bathwater for the garden, one hopes.😁

I was upstairs and heard this weird noise downstairs but thought it might be my neighbour’s fire alarm. Heard some voice saying some. Tracked the sound down to my phone but swiped it off before I’d read it and realised what it was

FurForksSake · 15/08/2026 08:57

I had it again in the night! Blinking thing.

Blimey. I wonder what he would have made of the air siren alerts.

I'm not saying it is or isn't, I'm just saying i think the alert is unclear. As evidenced by all the people going mental at anyone having a normal bbq in their garden all over mumsnet this morning, when the online gov guidance (someone else helpfully posted) said normal bbqs are fine as long as they aren't left unattended.

OonaStubbs · 15/08/2026 12:09

My grandma was terrified, she thought the doodlebugs had started dropping again.

Agreed! All sorts of things can happen when you're driving. Being startled is not a reason to crash your car.

Tbh I find all the hand wringing about 'it made me jump, it scared my child/elderly person' really odd. Somehow I think those children/elderly will be even more scared when the landscape around them in on fire

DH is on Scout camp. He had banned phones.

But any scout who was on camp and brought a phone they shouldn't have, will have been caught!

That could be awkward for them. Remember when mine were in scouts always someone tried to sneak one in usually got caught right enough.😂

I’d turned mine off the last time after the test and had forgotten to turn it back on!
