Anyone else just had the wildfire alert on their phone? It scared me to death. There are no wildfires round here that I know of.

OP posts:

Even so it really wasn't very loud at all.

Maybe not on your phone but it was extremely loud on mine and I was driving, not the safest thing

@OonaStubbs did you think that the government had singled you out as the only person who needed a warning not to be fire unsafe 😂

Yes, I got it and so has everyone I have spoken to.

I did see another thread about it a few minutes ago, but refrained from posting on it, because the OP of the thread started the thread with a silly gif, and proceeded to post another one when someone suggested something to her. Constant use of gifs really annoys me.

So I'm posting on this thread instead.

First emergency alert we've got since the 'practice' ones. These wildfires are getting serious, so I'm not surprised to have got it. A few posters - on that other thread - said they're going to switch off their notifications on their phone, as they feel 'infantilised' by the alert. LMFAO! 😂 How pathetic. They need to get a grip. It's the first one we've had! How do these people cope with real life?

HoraceCope · 14/08/2026 19:43

i bet people will carry on with bbq's on the beach
and in their back gardens that are concreted over

Anonymouseposter · 14/08/2026 19:43

Yes. It came through in Welsh first so it took me too long to read it and I could just make out severe emergency and fire. I was relieved to get the English version.

Ihaveausername · 14/08/2026 19:33

Didn't get any here (Scotland) Maybe we don't matter

Are you in a drought area? Did no one in Scotland get it?

PensionPTake · 14/08/2026 19:46

Why does it only say don't use disposable bbqs and not mention other bbqs? Are those still allowed?!

PinkHairbrushClub · 14/08/2026 19:47

Yep. Came through up here in Durham. We were at a busy restaurant and sounded like the fire alarm going off. Was a bit disconcerting.

edited because spotted errors

Indeed, and it would have been entirely appropriate for the alert to have sounded in STOURBRIDGE, wouldn't it!

I do not live anywhere near there, in common with most of the people who got the alert.

Next time there is a serious, urgent risk to life in a particular area, how many people do you think will hear that alert and just go "Oh, some bollocks about BBQs probably" and ignore it?

Edited

It’s almost like that want people to prevent the same thing happening in other areas…

IlikethoseBalenciagas · 14/08/2026 19:49

No one needs a BBQ. We all have ovens.

Only the firefighters and engines from around the country are busy tackling these fires, so doing anything that increases the risk of fire could in turn pose a higher risk to lives and homes.

crackofdoom · 14/08/2026 19:06

Yes, and it annoyed me slightly. IMO it's best kept for immediate, serious risk to life (we had one for Storm Goretti), rather than something that would be best disseminated as a PSA. Maybe the government should send these as text messages?

I'll take an emergency alert that bit less seriously next time.

Edited

Oh give over. I was at a train station when it happened, it didn’t inconvenience anyone - slight confusion for a minute? Sure. It’s really not that big of a deal. They have them once a month in some parts of America.

Yep. Crying wolf if it happens too often. Government broadcasting “alerts” directly into our homes is too
much like 1984 (and 2020), especially ones telling us what to do and what not to do, I must check again how to disable the alerts, while this is still possible.

BurntBroccoli · 14/08/2026 19:52

No as turned the alerts off last time in case I got one in the middle of the night. Signal rubbish here!

Exactly. The overreaction from a few posters on this - and several other threads about it - is farcical. It's once in 2 years. Get a grip man!

Ovoemconserva · 14/08/2026 19:55

Great for the people in unfortunate circumstances that have an emergency phone that's just been outted.
Whilst I think they are a good idea they need to be more published in advance imo.

My grass is like straw so any spark from even a normal BBQ could potentially catch fire. It’s windy too.

FairViewRosie25 · 14/08/2026 19:55

Yes wondered what the hell it was when phone went mental. Bloody wouldn't work in Tesco earlier

Ffs. 1984!

some people just rail back with “I won’t be told what to do”

squirrelchops2 · 14/08/2026 19:57

Let's hope people got the alert or else the system isn't working!

Why would a gas BBQ be a risk?

I know right. Some people sound about 7 years old!

Oh it’ll never happen to me… let’s hope that’s not your famous last word. BBQ fire in one garden, flying ember his cushions in next, maybe some washing in the next garden, no-one at home or without the common sense to douse the fire and it’ll start.
I live surrounded by fields, so in constant worry, but we keep ISO containers full of water and do have a private water supply and reservoir. What do you do?
Oh nothing. As it’d never happen to you.

SwedishEdith · 14/08/2026 19:58

I'm fine with these being sent out more regularly. So many people now seem clueless about things I'd consider everyday knowledge. And this one ties in with today's ban so the best time to send it, before Friday evening.

LillyPeaceFlowerSun · 14/08/2026 19:59

NervousSheepy · 14/08/2026 19:07

I think people are not fully understanding how dangerous the situation is so I'm glad they've done it.

I agree but I don’t think it needed the siren.

It should also include don’t litter - esp glass bottles - caused a fire locally here.

Have you stood near a BBQ??? It’s intense heat next to tinder dry plants, grass and leaves, generally surrounded by wooden fences.

Just cook your meat in the oven for a week or two and then sit outdoors to eat.
