Anyone else just had the wildfire alert on their phone? It scared me to death. There are no wildfires round here that I know of.

Yes, there's been a fire during the last hot spell near us, but thankfully none now. Was a bit jarring!

WallaceinAnderland · 14/08/2026 19:05

I expect everyone would have had the alarm. Isn't that what they're designed for?

Iriseee · 14/08/2026 19:05

Yes. But does anyone have a screen grab of it ? It started reading it out loud and I didn't like that so I clicked off it and didn't really read it properly.

Yes!
We were all playing 'hunt the phone '.

Yes - terrified the life out of me! Glad I wasn't driving!

This.
I think it's actually a bit dangerous.

AutumnLover1990 · 14/08/2026 19:05

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 14/08/2026 19:05

Scared the shit out of me!!!

crackofdoom · 14/08/2026 19:06

Yes, and it annoyed me slightly. IMO it's best kept for immediate, serious risk to life (we had one for Storm Goretti), rather than something that would be best disseminated as a PSA. Maybe the government should send these as text messages?

I'll take an emergency alert that bit less seriously next time.

Yes.

The TV newsreaders phone was peeping too. It must override DND.

Cantloseyou · 14/08/2026 19:07

People still aren’t listening though, saw someone trying to light à bbq today!

Basically said that there is huge risk of wildfires right now

do not have bbq’s fireworks, campfires and anything involving a flame

Here it is - I’m glad they took action.

I have 5 disposable bbq's that have been in cupboard for over 10 years, do you think I should bin them? I'm panicking looking at them

Littlefish · 14/08/2026 19:07

Yes - West Midlands

Edited

I think people are not fully understanding how dangerous the situation is so I'm glad they've done it.

JackJarvisEsq · 14/08/2026 19:07

I’m in Scotland so no alert but heard the newsreader on Sky’s go off

Dabralor · 14/08/2026 19:07

Nearly shat myself. I wanted it to stop so much I just jabbed at all the buttons on my phone u til it disappeared.

I therefore haven’t actually read it properly. I think I this is a flaw? Could have just been a normal text message. Save this for when the fire is in the next street.

SilenceInside · 14/08/2026 19:07

Oh I feel left out as I didn’t get a notification! I wonder why not.

FurForksSake · 14/08/2026 19:08

Yep. And we cancelled the big bbq we had planned for the weekend and the food order.

The pictures of Stourbridge have really stayed with me and having a bbq right now when we’ve had no rain and everything is so dry, we were stupid to consider it in suppose. Doesn’t take much for a fire to happen, we had a small garden one a couple of months ago from our bbq so we are very conscious now.

In your phone settings, there should be a section called 'Safety and emergency'; if you click on that and scroll to the bottom, will have 'emergency alerts'. In that you can see a history of all the alerts your phone has received.
