Anyone else just had the wildfire alert on their phone? It scared me to death. There are no wildfires round here that I know of.

Yes. I dropped my phone. I’m great in a crisis.

TheSmallAssassin · 14/08/2026 19:08

It's saying not to do anything that could start a fire, not about any current fires

Not sure why only the Welsh version is shown here www.gov.uk/alerts/current-alerts, but the Google translation is

There is a serious risk of fire across the nation. Residents, landowners or visitors should not undertake any activity that could cause a fire, including disposable barbecues, fire pits, garden burners or fireworks. Even a small flame can quickly develop into a large wildfire, endangering lives, homes, businesses and emergency responders.

Baileyss · 14/08/2026 19:08

I better get my hose out and water my garden

TheSmallAssassin · 14/08/2026 19:10

crackofdoom · 14/08/2026 19:06

Yes, and it annoyed me slightly. IMO it's best kept for immediate, serious risk to life (we had one for Storm Goretti), rather than something that would be best disseminated as a PSA. Maybe the government should send these as text messages?

I'll take an emergency alert that bit less seriously next time.

Edited

It's quite a process to get one of these approved, so I am sure the government think the risk is high enough to warrant it.

Oh I feel left out as I didn’t get a notification! I wonder why not.

Turns out I’d got them turned off in my settings. No recollection of having done that myself though.

Pedant61 · 14/08/2026 19:11

It was a bit loud, but no idea why anyone would think it was "scary". It's just patronising nonsense. We all know about the fires, and that we should be careful. And any idiot who wants to set a fire deliberately isn't going to be put off by a text from the Government!
What a waste of time and money.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 14/08/2026 19:07

Here it is - I’m glad they took action.

Thank you. Yes I'm also glad they've done this. I think PM should also make a public statement than anyone caught intentionally starting fires to cause damage will feel the full force of the law.

Downloadfilms · 14/08/2026 19:11

I thought it was a nuclear attack!

Not a waste. My partner's house has been threatened by a wildfire for the past two days that has been growing and spreading towards him. It's been terrifying.

I have 5 disposable bbq's that have been in cupboard for over 10 years, do you think I should bin them? I'm panicking looking at them

Just don’t light them and it’ll be fine, or sell them to some very rich people as I’m sure the rules don’t apply to them when it comes to climate change and associated risks!

HoraceCope · 14/08/2026 19:13

we live near a camp site
what will the campers do?
is that why there were queues at the chippy last night?

I think the COBRA meeting had to prove it had done something 🙄.

A serious discussion on how to mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure we do everything in our power to stop it would have been more appropriate I feel.

IlikethoseBalenciagas · 14/08/2026 19:14

Doesn't say anything about cigarette litter though does it. I pick up hundreds of those things every month. It's the most littered item and the most dangerous.

Heaven help the next person I see throwing cigarette litter down.

Fire services around the country are on their KNEES. There isn’t enough PPE in circulation to keep everyone safe, and firefighters are working overtime round the clock to try and keep on top of it.

Right now, my husband is fighting a wildfire, his third of the day. Just like yesterday, just like tomorrow. And they are STILL getting callouts to dickheads having bonfires and bbqs gone wrong. And they weren’t sitting around on their arses before all this, either! God help any of us if we need them to assist at an RTA, or an electrical fire or anything else, cos they’re just too thinly stretched. Things will break.

Anything the Government can do to raise awareness of the terminally stupid about the additional risks right now is just fine by me.

BlackberryPickingProwess · 14/08/2026 19:15

Yes, ironically I was watching a documentary on YouTube about climate change and wildfires at the time!

It's all starting to feel a bit apocalyptic at this point 😩

PuzzledWatermelon · 14/08/2026 19:15

I live on the edge of a nature reserve and a few times in the past there have been some idiots, usually kids, who have started small fires. Luckily the fire brigade get here in time to put them out, but I’m slightly worrying if any of these kids were to start a fire now. Especially in this dry heat. I don’t mind an alert of this nature being sent out to all smart phones.

WingBingo · 14/08/2026 19:15

DH is staying in Devon and they’ve abandoned lighting the bbq for dinner and gone to get fish and chips.

ExtremeDecluttering · 14/08/2026 19:16

It wasn't that loud or scary, I was walking along the street with my phone in my hand and didn't jump, drop it or anything really, just read it and said did you just get that to my neighbour who was coming the other way and she said yes. Didn't notice her jumping, dropping her phone or similar either. I'm glad they are acting, the situation is very dangerous.

MacMom · 14/08/2026 19:16

3 flipping times so far. Once in Welsh, twice in English!

Gas camping stoves aren't banned. Most campsites don't allow open fires anyway.

(I love an open fire while camping, but maybe not at the moment eh).

i wonder who is having a bbq regardless?

We are, but it's not at ground level and not on grass

Thank you,
I know I'm being ridiculous but I'm a panicker in everyday life and just couldn't leave them there so I've filled bath with cold water and submerged them. I'll bin them tomorrow

Betterbeingdead · 14/08/2026 19:17

It will obviously sound louder in a confined space indoors than outside.
