How often do you cry?

I cry most days, I actually find it really therapeutic. I do have bpd so might be that but how normal is this.

I have been cry free for years. Even when i was spiritually ill, i was cry free. I had some bereavement's during this time and i remained cry free because i celebrated my loved ones lives, rather than allow my loved ones passing to devastate me in to despair hopelessness. Self awareness means no need to cry.

You live alone?

Sadla · 14/08/2026 21:22

Normally only a few times a year when thinking of someone no longer alive.
but struggling a lot with work and I’m crying pretty much daily in my car at lunch 😬

Last time was at Dad’s funeral 6 years ago. I haven’t been able to cry easily since my abusive marriage ended 10 years ago. I should probably try to figure it out in therapy or something as I would like that release.

Specialneedsnightmare · 14/08/2026 21:25

Every few days or so.

LipglossAndLies · 14/08/2026 21:27

Rarely, I can't remember the last time I did.

I very rarely cry.
But when I do cry, it’s over beautiful songs or child films.

I never cry when I get sad news but I recognise that that’s not healthy.

You are implying that crying is a choice and a negative thing.

Crying can’t usually be helped and it’s a normal, healthy sign of emotion.

SkyBeau · 14/08/2026 21:34

I do not live alone. I have never lived alone. I have never walked alone. I did not come in to the world alone. Loneliness can not spell my name. I do not cry often either because i know who i am. I have very good, healthy boundaries that keep me safe too. Self awareness is my everything, alongside my very good, healthy boundaries. I have not cried in years, yet my heart remains warm and compassionate and close to God. I am currently bidding for a new home because i practice self awareness and i protect my peace and my energy, now that is what i mean by i do not cry, i care for myself instead and i stick to my good, healthy boundaries. I will not be moving alone and I hope my housing transfer bid is successful.

There's quite a lot of ignorance and judgement on this thread!
If a question was asked of 'how often do you laugh' there would less criticism of this emotional show than crying.

MrsMitford3 · 14/08/2026 21:41

I am such a cryer-I am very sentimental and my tears are always very close to the surface. Laughter is as well.

I cry at all sorts of things-probably daily.
I am very empathetic and find it hard to be neutral/not bothered.
I don't consider it a bad thing-I am easily moved and have always been a cryer 😂

Oh calm down

where is the criticism? Just one post will do as an example

Rarely, I’m not a cryer at all. I was a bit welled up when I’d lost some sunglasses last month but before that it would’ve been last June at my friends funeral

abracadabra1980 · 14/08/2026 21:42

I have been a crier all of my life-I'm extremely emotionally aware and can almost feel other people's emotional pain. I have welled up passing roadkill. especially hedgehogs - they have no chance with cars and it's so unfair it makes me quite upset. I've no idea whether this is some sort of mental disorder; I have been in two emotionally abusive relationships and the only way I could communicate my distress was through crying. My upbringing was happy, but not overly emotionally invested in. I definitely experienced crippling depression a year after my best friend was diagnosed and died from cancer. I was just so numb and cried daily. My dogs are a great leveller-I adore them and we do a lot of activities together. I knew I was in a bad place when I stopped feeling that joy. A new puppy soon brought it back... Roll on 8 years and I've since lost my dad. Long traumatic illness and the family round the clock caring that went with it. I cried so much I started Sertraline. The tears just stopped and I still have not cried over finally losing my beloved dad almost 3 years ago. As soon as I cut down on Sertraline I feel more emotional again. I would probably be diagnosed as a HSP should I try and explore it. I don't feel 'me' being this together, but I'm ok-my dogs are my absolute rocks.

Do the people who are crying regularly are you mentally ill or just cry a lot/ like a good cry

I'm not mentally ill, I hadn't used to cry, abd I hate feeling like this. Life is just beyond shit at the moment

I would put myself in the semi regular category but it’s more often watching sad things/reading things in the news.

For myself it’s not so often. But I did today. My cat really bit me and I am so fed up of his aggression, which we have been trying to deal with/train/help. But it was definitely a release for other emotional things at the moment and I felt better after about a whole lot of other things.

Wipeywipey · 14/08/2026 21:49

On average about 1 or 2 times a year I think. Some years have had worse things happen so it depends but it takes a death or someone who knows me picking a surprise fight to hurt me enough. I had a tough year with 5 big life events and death back-to-back and thought I was emotionally quite unstable but I do think that the year of chronic stress triggered early(ish) peri at 43. Is it possible that peri is increasing your BPD symptoms?

Whynottryagain · 14/08/2026 21:50

Almost never for sad reasons atm because I'm happy. I cried nearly every day for two years after breaking up with my ex though - often would wake up crying.

However, now I'm a parent I find myself welling up over stuff that would have left me unmoved pre-child. Most recently when reading Gozzle to dc!
