Just gone to do the fortnightly shop, and the parade of out of stock items seems to be longer and longer

Sainsbury's Anchovy Fillets in Olive Oil 50g (30g*)
Sainsbury's Tuna Chunks in Olive Oil 3x80g
Milton Sterilising Tablets x28
Persil Bio Washing Laundry Detergent Powder 42 Washes 2.1 kg
McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives Biscuits Twin Pack 2x316g
Dairylea Cheese Slices Family Pack Multipack 16 x 18.75g
Sainsbury's Dishwasher Rinse Aid Lemon 400ml
Sainsbury's All Purpose Cleaner, Citrus 1L
Highland Game Smoky Venison Burgers 340g
Whole Earth Drizzler Salted Caramel Peanut Butter 320g
John West Sardines in Sunflower Oil, Boneless 95g (67g*)
Dettol 750ml Antibacterial Multi Surface Cleaning Spray
Simple Bar Soap 4x100g
Sainsbury's Anchovy Fillets in Olive Oil 100g (60g*)
Hilltoppers Spreadable Sweet & Salty Honey 225g

I've also discovered that if you don't have an item saved as a fave, the website just hides it from you. Meaning you can go crazy looking for it.

As with most retailers now, there is no route to complain, except a phone number, which isn't great with my disability.

I was going to whinge last shop when 13 items off my list were out of stock.

I'm not brave enough to be told I'm unreasonable, but in the pursuit of chat, is this just Sainsbos, or would I have the same issue with other online supermarkets.

Both anchovies were out of stock at ours yesterday which was annoying as had to buy John west ones that were over £3!

TheDogsMother · 14/08/2026 22:39

First world problem but Sainsbury’s substituted my my Picpoul de Pinet for another brand of the same. Also no Gazpacho for weeks 🤣

caringcarer · 14/08/2026 23:16

I like their towels and household bits. I've just picked up DS 3 bath sheets, oven gloves, a frying pan and a silicon spatula.

Tillow4ever · 14/08/2026 23:28

I find Tesco home delivery very good. They also have a WhatsApp number that you can text about any issues, which has been brilliantly helpful.

I’ve only used JS a couple of times, and wasn’t particularly impressed. Tried Asda and they were god awful. Morrisons wasn’t too bad, I think they would be my second choice these days. Ocado were great but expensive - only worth using if you have a big discount voucher!

Jadeprincess · 14/08/2026 23:31

PartialEclipseOfTheHeart · 14/08/2026 18:33

What are the venison burgers like, out of interest?

Oh nooooo ! You don't want to eat Rudolf and his team do you?
Try explaining that to the kids at Christmas when Santa doesn't come.

Crikeyalmighty · 14/08/2026 23:31

I did an Ocado online for my very skint hardworking son today who is without a flatmate and struggling in London ( what a nice mum I am eh!) Not one item didn’t turn up

Nousernameideaaga · 14/08/2026 23:34

I stopped ordering from
Sainsburys for this reason. That and the fact that the shelf life of the products they sent was usually dreadful

Gone with Tesco’s now and don’t have that problem. Their website and checkout process is also far easier

Sunshineandrainbow · 14/08/2026 23:42

Fridges very empty in my medium size store yesterday, I thought they were having a move around but no just empty.

Anyahyacinth · 15/08/2026 00:14

bitontheobtuse · 14/08/2026 18:32

Go to the shop then.

OP mentions she is disabled 🙄

bugaboo218 · 15/08/2026 00:41

I have online shops with both Sainsbury's and Ocado weekly.

I find Sainsbury's quality on most of their own brand stuff very good, but I am really annoyed with their short dates on fruit and veg at the moment in my area. Also the fact that they do not notify you until the day of your shop that stuff you have ordered is out of stock, as a busy person this then becomes a ball ache if I then have to go in store and shop. Delivery is often early and substations are usually like for like.

Ocado I like the fact that it tells you in advance if stuff is out of stock, so you can find an alternative before you put the order through. I also like the fact that Ocado still bag.

The downside to Ocado though is that they do not do a big enough own brand range and some of their items can be more expensive then other supermarkets. EG on Ocado tinned peaches are £1.70 ( have to buy branded, as no own brand) Sainsbury own brand are £1.15. When you are buying multiple tins of them that's a big price differential.

Have tried Asda, Morrisons online over the years - dreadful and Tesco okay over the years. Always return to Sainsbury's and Ocado.

In-store is generally better than online with Sainsbury's. I think they are all the same for product availability to be honest.

Have you tried Ocado? They stock some Marks and Spencer items.

PolkaDotPorridge · 15/08/2026 07:05

bitontheobtuse · 14/08/2026 18:32

Go to the shop then.

Rude. Have you thought perhaps the OP cannot get to the shop and that’s why they shop online? Because that’s the reason!

Epoisses · 15/08/2026 07:59

The Persil powder has been off the shelves for weeks in my big Sainsbos

CCSS15 · 15/08/2026 08:08

I think it must vary by store as I very rarely get subs from sainsburys and find them the best for quality, items in stock and price - the only caveat is that quality seems to dip for weekend deliveries but during the week is fine

Yello24 · 15/08/2026 08:24

I am genuinely baffled why anyone chooses Sainsbury’s unless it’s their only option. Everything about it is worse than other supermarkets. It is in fact my nearest big supermarket but always dead as everyone chooses to go a few minutes further to cheaper and better ones.
If you only have a Sainsbury’s I pity you!

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 15/08/2026 08:28

Just switch to Ocado. If you have items in your basket, they’ve reserved; there’s no one in a store to take it from a shelf before they can pick it for you. I’ve only had about ten missing items from Ocado in the last 6 years, weekly deliveries.

saveforthat · 15/08/2026 08:37

bitontheobtuse · 14/08/2026 18:32

What a stupid comment. Many of us, probably including the can't just "go to the shop" and even if we could why offer a crap service. I use Tesco and they are pretty good.

I have Aldi, Lidl, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s to chose from and Sainsbury’s has far better quality meat, fruit and veg. Asda used to until the brothers fell out.

I can't comment on online ordering but my store has plenty of the usual items, no idea about the Rudolph burgers though as I've never looked for them (thanks @Jadeprincess ! 😂). Perhaps it's your local store OP, whether it's because it's small, the only one or extra busy.

dudsville · 15/08/2026 08:47

We've used sainsburys deliveries for about 15 years even in the pandemic we didn't have as many oos items. Maybe 1 or 2, but it's more often going to have everything we ordered. So perhaps this is about how some individual stores are managed? I also wouldn't use them if they consistently gave a bad experience.

grasshopperhop · 15/08/2026 08:51

Wow - how are you so entitled? Do you realise that there’s massive disruption in supply chains due to global events happening? Drought, wildfires, wars … it’s not a perfect system out there to get the products you want to be on your doorstep!
Take a reality check OP and be grateful for what is available at the click of a button!!

Doesn’t seem to have affected Ocado though…

hopspot · 15/08/2026 08:54

My mum shops at Sainsbury’s. I was completely perplexed by having to ‘unlock’ offers on the nectar card in a very specific order or they don’t work. It’s unnecessarily complicated, especially since many customers must be like my mum and be elderly and home based. The Tesco club card is so much easier to navigate.

juldan · 15/08/2026 09:21

In my opinion there is no point to Sainsbury’s. The quality of their products is not better than Tesco’s and the prices are not that much cheaper than Waitrose. The Nectar offers only apply to selected products. Whenever I go, I come out shocked with the prices and disappointed with the quality. I shop mainly at Lidl but if I want something fancier, I’d rather go to Waitrose.
Sainsbury’s used to be my closest supermarket but luckily since I have moved I now have Lidl, Tesco and Waitrose nearby.

Somersetbaker · 15/08/2026 10:58

I can't comment about Sainsbury's but for Tesco, the website offers items that my local big store doesn't stock and conversely doesn't offer some items it does stock. The "temporarily unavailable" is also suspect. The App seems to get it right. What I don't know is which store a delivery would come from, click and collect I can select, when I checkout on the website. TBH it's academic because at the moment I always shop in person.

Maybe it's an age thing, but I feel no need to be "grateful" to anyone for a service I have paid them for. Presumably we have different standards ?

Thanks to all for your views. Just had the receipt email and there are 3 more things they can't supply. Twin pack of chocolate digestives, some caramel eclairs and the budget dishwasher salt (again, that's 3 shops running).

We use Sainsburys because going back there were a few things that only they sold, and they had a decent deli. However over the years they've closed their counters, and the unique things are slowly disappearing.

I have tried using the FB chat. However I only ever seem to get a chatbot that invariably tells me to call them. Which I can't. DH (bless) has offered to many times. However I am still at that difficult stage of being disabled that I refuse to cop out and just rely on able bodied people. (Which is another thread, subject and username).

Will certainly look into the alternatives here. Our first foray into online shopping back in 2008, was Tesco, so maybe try them again.

We tried to use Morrisons last year. However maybe it was our bad luck, but that order had a lot of things missing. And unlike Sainsburys, Morrisons insist on forcing a substitution on you. By the time we had rejected the substitutions, the value of the shop fell below the delivery threshold, and DH had to get involved.

As the username hints, we're in Brum, and have one "super" store and 2 other large stores (with Argos and Habitat inside). Not quite sure how that pans out.

For amusement, DS(30) thinks only old people use Sainsburys, and that we are reaping the karma of dragging him around shopping on Saturdays when he was little. In a nice way.
