Is there a point to Sainsburys ?

Just gone to do the fortnightly shop, and the parade of out of stock items seems to be longer and longer

Sainsbury's Anchovy Fillets in Olive Oil 50g (30g*)
Sainsbury's Tuna Chunks in Olive Oil 3x80g
Milton Sterilising Tablets x28
Persil Bio Washing Laundry Detergent Powder 42 Washes 2.1 kg
McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives Biscuits Twin Pack 2x316g
Dairylea Cheese Slices Family Pack Multipack 16 x 18.75g
Sainsbury's Dishwasher Rinse Aid Lemon 400ml
Sainsbury's All Purpose Cleaner, Citrus 1L
Highland Game Smoky Venison Burgers 340g
Whole Earth Drizzler Salted Caramel Peanut Butter 320g
John West Sardines in Sunflower Oil, Boneless 95g (67g*)
Dettol 750ml Antibacterial Multi Surface Cleaning Spray
Simple Bar Soap 4x100g
Sainsbury's Anchovy Fillets in Olive Oil 100g (60g*)
Hilltoppers Spreadable Sweet & Salty Honey 225g

I've also discovered that if you don't have an item saved as a fave, the website just hides it from you. Meaning you can go crazy looking for it.

As with most retailers now, there is no route to complain, except a phone number, which isn't great with my disability.

I was going to whinge last shop when 13 items off my list were out of stock.

I'm not brave enough to be told I'm unreasonable, but in the pursuit of chat, is this just Sainsbos, or would I have the same issue with other online supermarkets.

I am physically unable to go shopping and rely on having my groceries delivered, I use Tesco. I have few problems with out of stock items, any that are out of stock are clearly indicated when I order so I can choose alternatives or change my meal plans. There are odd items that are unavailable when the order is being picked and I get an email on the morning of delivery listing any such items and and substitutions they have used so I can accept them or not. I guess about 1 in 10 orders has an items they cannot deliver.

i did have a problem earlier this summer when all fresh and frozen items were out of stock, it turned out that the heat wave had knocked out the fridges and freezers in the store my location used for picking! This led to some very creative meals that week but I knew in advance what items were not available.

I use the Favourites list every delivery, picking out items I regularly buy then searching for new things as necessary. Using the Favourites list does not impact on my ability to access the full range of products but it does save time.

May be Tescos App is better than Sainsbury’s, so you could think of swapping to another supermarket?

Maybe go into the store and spend time looking for other options.
You do come across as entitled. This would not stress me at all….

I’d love to be able to go into the store to pick my own shopping but I’m disabled and find walking very painful. I’m just so grateful that I can buy my groceries online.

myrtleberry · 16/08/2026 11:44

Sainsburys own brand pineapple slices have disappeared for several weeks

All of those products have alternatives. You don’t have to have lemon scented dishwasher tabs fgs! Why have we got so prescriptive and inflexible in what we want? It’s very privileged.

I am always suspicious when the alternatives are the more expensive ones though.

Strangely they are the only place I can source toilet duck refills pad things for my bog brush.

It's a one hour round trip to my nearest though so I'm probably responsible for that particular item going out of stock!

Tesco charge the lower price if there's a replacement. I'm not sure what the tolerance is (like if it's £££s maybe they don't replace) but so far they've been good on the very few they've replaced. Plus you don't have to accept replacements; though we've been gifted them for free before now when we've rejected fresh produce, I guess the driver would have to return it and it would then get binned.

You know you get the price difference back in vouchers don’t you?

takemeonholidayrightnow · 16/08/2026 12:47

I’ve just had a £150 shop delivered from Sainsbury’s and not a single sub.

maryberryslayers · 16/08/2026 20:35

Switch to Ocado, very few out of stock items.

I wanted to, not available in my area “ too rural” 🥹

summater · 17/08/2026 06:29

I quite like them but haven't used them recently as Ocado always seem to have free delivery slots on Mon - Wed so I use them

loveawineloveacrisp · 17/08/2026 06:42

I switched to Ocado for this exact reason. Plus they kept sending new items with very short dates. Then had to phone and get refund, put on hold for ages. Lost patience with them.

Alan Coren explained that there is indeed a point to Sainsburys, it keeps the riff raff out of Waitrose.

Still one of my favourite quotes

Doesn't always work. Regularly if they are out of stock of the best value-for-money version of something, they will substitute a smaller pack of a more expensive thing and you only get the pack price difference back so maybe no refund at all or only a small one when the price per 100g or price per unit item is much greater.

I always send those subs back. I only keep
ones where it's like-for-like, or nigh on.

The point is it defeats the whole purpose of the convenience of delivery, or being a massive well-stocked physical shop. I don't want to go into store to top up as well or to go hunting about for common items in other shops. That much out of stock a couple of times and I go elsewhere. They are in a competitive market and need to pull their socks up if the OP's problem is common.

I must be the only person on here who goes into the store. I like checking the freshness, expiry dates etc. I pick up some bargains along the way and often see things I fancy.
Before you say I must have too much time on my hands I don’t!

I get online shops for the general shopping as it's boring and bulky, usually with anyone that gives me an offer. Ocado delivery always seems to be free nowadays on some of the long slots Mon - Wed so I use them, I don't get delivery passes as then I would be stuck with one store and it would probably cost more. I still get some fresh food in store though and like browsing M&S and Waitrose.

What are the venison burgers like, out of interest?

Delicious and they are the most sustainable meat so you are doing the environment a favour by eating them.

I wish we had a local M&S, but sadly we don’t.

Go to the shop then.

I think the OP shops online due to disability.

If this were AIBU, I'd point out how few people notice, and even fewer care.

I'm married to someone severely disabled so I totally get it- whilst I'm able to go shopping we can't go together often so I tend to use online delivery 😊
