Is there a point to Sainsburys ?

Just gone to do the fortnightly shop, and the parade of out of stock items seems to be longer and longer

Sainsbury's Anchovy Fillets in Olive Oil 50g (30g*)
Sainsbury's Tuna Chunks in Olive Oil 3x80g
Milton Sterilising Tablets x28
Persil Bio Washing Laundry Detergent Powder 42 Washes 2.1 kg
McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives Biscuits Twin Pack 2x316g
Dairylea Cheese Slices Family Pack Multipack 16 x 18.75g
Sainsbury's Dishwasher Rinse Aid Lemon 400ml
Sainsbury's All Purpose Cleaner, Citrus 1L
Highland Game Smoky Venison Burgers 340g
Whole Earth Drizzler Salted Caramel Peanut Butter 320g
John West Sardines in Sunflower Oil, Boneless 95g (67g*)
Dettol 750ml Antibacterial Multi Surface Cleaning Spray
Simple Bar Soap 4x100g
Sainsbury's Anchovy Fillets in Olive Oil 100g (60g*)
Hilltoppers Spreadable Sweet & Salty Honey 225g

I've also discovered that if you don't have an item saved as a fave, the website just hides it from you. Meaning you can go crazy looking for it.

As with most retailers now, there is no route to complain, except a phone number, which isn't great with my disability.

I was going to whinge last shop when 13 items off my list were out of stock.

I'm not brave enough to be told I'm unreasonable, but in the pursuit of chat, is this just Sainsbos, or would I have the same issue with other online supermarkets.

We use Tesco and substitutions are rare, out of stock almost never, delivery slots usually available even if you're booking 24hrs ahead (always last minute in our house). But I have a feeling it's location dependent. Ours is one of the largest stores in the country, and it's competing with every retailer, they're all available within about 3 miles.

We're looking to move to rural Yorkshire next year, and I'm not looking forward to online shopping there, but hopefully we can go old school and use local shops for at least the majority of fresh ingredients.

My mum shops at Sainsbury’s. I was completely perplexed by having to ‘unlock’ offers on the nectar card in a very specific order or they don’t work. It’s unnecessarily complicated, especially since many customers must be like my mum and be elderly and home based. The Tesco club card is so much easier to navigate.

You don't have to do them in a specific order. Just go to prices and 'unlock all' and then to points and 'unlock all'. (Or vice versa.) Done!

Thanks for this I thought it was just me.. it's ridiculous nowadays

I agree. It's always out of stuff for me, and not unusual things. Last week they had no nappy bags available at all! I've started stocking up on anything non perishable when it's available but it's a very annoying way to shop. My local shop is massive so it's not that either.

According to Stephen Fry the point of Sainsbury’s is to keep the scum out of Waitrose 😂

Did he really say that ?

TweetTwewt · 16/08/2026 08:15

They've also discontinued loads of their own brand products. No own brand rice cakes any more!

Jk987 · 16/08/2026 08:16

All of those products have alternatives. You don’t have to have lemon scented dishwasher tabs fgs! Why have we got so prescriptive and inflexible in what we want? It’s very privileged.

SomethingFun · 16/08/2026 08:24

I do online shopping at Waitrose, which is about 40 miles away so it’s worth checking if you could get a delivery. I’m sure you could fill your boots with fancy tinned fish 😁 I do not find it particularly expensive- my weekly shop for 4 comes in around 100-120 depending whether we need washing powder, dishwasher tabs etc. My driver has literally just arrived too 😁

I find Tesco home delivery very good. They also have a WhatsApp number that you can text about any issues, which has been brilliantly helpful.

I’ve only used JS a couple of times, and wasn’t particularly impressed. Tried Asda and they were god awful. Morrisons wasn’t too bad, I think they would be my second choice these days. Ocado were great but expensive - only worth using if you have a big discount voucher!

Ocado price match with Tesco.

Ocado price match with Tesco.

Yes, but they have a limited range to start with, and often the only options are dearer ones. So you're already starting from a higher price point than you can get elsewhere.

Onelifeonly · 16/08/2026 08:50

Well the only item on your list I might buy is the dettol cleaning spray. I use Sainsbury's a lot though in person as there is a quite large one 10 minutes walk away but Tescos for delivery. Tescos is almost 100% reliable for delivering everything I ask for, other than a two week period earlier this summer when their fridges must have broken down and no chilled items were available (which they didn't explain) but that hadn't happened previously in the many years I've had deliveries from them. However, we do find quite a few Sainsbury's products are nicer than Tesco's.

cityliving99 · 16/08/2026 08:55

Maybe go into the store and spend time looking for other options.
You do come across as entitled. This would not stress me at all….

cityliving99 · 16/08/2026 08:57

NoWordForFluffy · 16/08/2026 07:59

Whereas I find completely the opposite. Sainsbury's is far better than the other supermarkets, IMO.

Asda and Morrison's are properly grim to visit, and I find Tesco to be dearer and worse quality than Sainsbury's.

The store here is less than two years old as well, and it's a far more pleasant experience all round to visit than others. Same as the newer Aldi is far superior to the older one, though I still find it a bit compact / hard to move around due to other shoppers.

Sainsbury's is very much my supermarket of choice as I don't have the funds to shop at Booths all the time.

And contrary to PP, I don't find it to be overly dearer than the other supermarkets. But I think it depends what you usually buy. Most of what I buy is Aldi price matched (or there are general / personal Nectar prices bringing the price down).

They also do some great clothes for those on a budget and some pretty decent homeware.

HexInductionHour · 16/08/2026 09:04

@cityliving99 yes actual cotton pyjamas !

DeftGoldHedgehog · 16/08/2026 09:07

I switched to Tesco as they are much better on stock control. Sainsbury's were always bad at running out of stuff in store even 20 years ago. The local store itself is quite useful though as it's practically a department store.

They are better than Morrisons and Asda IMO. Their stores are nicer than Tescos but the delivery service is not as good. Waitrose is my favourite but their delivery service was poor when I last used it. Aldi and Lidl are good but don't stock everything. M&S food is lovely but a bit packaged up and aimed at couples.

Tillow4ever · 16/08/2026 09:07

Tiddlywinks63 · 16/08/2026 08:30

Ocado price match with Tesco.

Do they price match to include what you get back in Clubcard points as well as Clubcard prices? Because why would i pay the same price and not get my Xmas food shop for free by switching from Tesco to Ocado?

I also find there are some products I can’t get from Ocado.

The point is it defeats the whole purpose of the convenience of delivery, or being a massive well-stocked physical shop. I don't want to go into store to top up as well or to go hunting about for common items in other shops. That much out of stock a couple of times and I go elsewhere. They are in a competitive market and need to pull their socks up if the OP's problem is common.

SssshButWeAllKnow · 16/08/2026 09:17

OP can you tell me more about the honey? Sweet and salty you say?

Not so much food and drink, but I can never get the shampoo that I like from Tesco or Sainsburys, in fact my Sainsburys stock on shampoo is rubbish. I order it online.

Smallestshadow · 16/08/2026 09:37

I always shop at Sainsbury’s and love it! It’s my closest supermarket and a big one so it has an Argos, clothes section etc. I only find things out of stock if I go on a Sun afternoon. Staff seem to be constantly restocking shelves at ours.

Yesiamstressedactually · 16/08/2026 09:39

Sardines are regularly out of stock in every supermarket.
I don't buy anchovies but whatever is affecting tin sardines supplies might also be affecting anchovies.

still baffles me why you need to ‘unlock’ anything but hey ho!

You didn't have to initially. Just a way to limit involvement, I suppose! On a Friday I unlock mine, DH's and my dad's.

At least you can lock spending now, so the points can't be stolen.

I'm a big fan of Nectar points, as I collect about £400 worth a year, which I spend on wine / food / ingredients for Christmas.

I guess it just takes some getting used to! My mum does save her nectar points for Christmas and has a decent amount!
