It’s over tomorrow, the heat is over for another year

Firstly I appreciate this is not the same for the rest of the country

but we’ve had it horrific here (London). I’ve never felt so shit in my life as I have for the last 10 weeks. I’ve spent between £250-350 a month on electricity (portable air conditioners). I’ve felt anxious, headachy, it’s FUCKED with my peri menopause (brain fog, no words, cognitive decline). I’ve felt tearful and as if it would go on forever. There are moments where I’ve thought I can’t take another moment of this. My sleep is proper fucked.

this has to change. I’ve done everything on a personsl
level I can. Air conditioners only when necessary, above 26 inside (DH has long Covid so literally throws up in heat). His asthma is exacerbated. The dogs have had the shittest summer. I’ve had a couple of rescues that can’t go out about 22 degrees. I reckon they’ve been walked briefly 3 times a week. We deliberately went away on a cheap caravan holiday twice just so they could smile. There were endless days I couldn’t work as too hot in my home office and clients cancelled.

I cannot wait til Saturday.

I hope for solidarity from others. I want to wear a fucking hoodie again. I’ve spent every day sat around in my underwear inside for vast stretches of the day. This is not sexy.

It was cold, but we didn't get any snow. There may have been a bit on the high points on the South Downs, but there definitely wasn't any in my town.

I’m just north of Durham. We had 36c yesterday and a lot of these heat waves have bern above 30c here. Maybe we should all flock to Northern Scotland 😳

I live in Sussex too and we had pretty decent snow in 2022, I remember because my daughter was born that year and I’ve got loads of pics of her in the snow. Also we definitely got some in 2018 because my work was closed. Your town must be very unlucky.

Yep I'm with you. I've been heavily pregnant and then had a newborn to keep cool and shaded in this, along with a 3yo who I don't want to take to the park in 30 degree heat. Living in a 2nd floor flat where the living room is currently 31 degrees.

Sooo ready for it to end, I have never worn shorts so much in my whole life. It's sweltering and puts me off even leaving home at all really, although the only relief is the aircon in my car.

I am worried you're being a bit optimistic to say it's over though, it's still only mid-August and several times I've been relieved looking at the following week's forecast just for it to change to late 20s again a few days later 🥲

I just long for the smell and sound of rain again!!!

It's not the heat, it's the total lack of rain

No significant rainfall is expected during the rest of August and long term forecasts aren't looking great either

I was unwell yesterday when it reached 25C. Glad it's back to 21C. Still too hot tbh but it will be down to 14C soon. I understand OP.

I actually felt yesterday was more bearable than today, perhaps it is the humidity. I have been wringing wet all day, I guess the house didn't get a cool blast this morning! I think we still reached 34 degrees. They keep promising a cool down don't they but tomorrow is 27 again.

It needs a good lot of rain and then to revert to a dry, sunny 23 degrees. That’s enjoyable and cheerful without being oppressive. And you can still do things.

I love shivering and cold mornings and frost and rain. Not keen on snow , but anything is better than this heat.

Definitely optimistic with regards the rain - no sign of that anytime soon in the SE. It is going to cool down significantly next week though which is great. The only problem then is that 20-21 degrees (which means 12-13 degrees in the mornings and at night) is going to feel rather cold after this, isn’t it…

I’m in Sussex- right by the beach. I can’t remember when we last had proper snow. My brother lives only a few miles away but north of the Downs and there have been a couple of times in the last ten years when he’s had a fairly respectable amount of snow and we’ve had none. It does very occasionally snow here but I can’t remember it settling properly for a day or so since my son was a toddler and he’s 18 now!

I don't like to weather watch, but happened to see this thread in the trending. Today was the hottest it has been in this house all summer, after assuming relief was coming.

I just looked at the Met Office long term forecast (which they update on a Friday) and it looks a bit more optimistic than it was.

It looks like we might get a bit of a respite in the next couple of weeks - at least from the 30+ days.

Honestly I really don’t think the heat has been that bad. It’s been nice to be able to get out and not worry about rain for a prolonged period of time.

I think I'd remember if we'd had any here, because you have to get up a steep hill to my road and they never grit the hill beyond the shop at the bottom, and our buses don't run. It's a right pain in the arse.

I remember the Beast from the East, because we'd booked a cottage in Cornwall a couple of weeks after and were surprised to see snow still on the hilltops on the way down. We definitely hadn't had snow that settled in my town, and we were gobsmacked that it was still there.

There have been a fair few times when I've been able to see snow on Crowborough Beacon, which I can see from my house, and sometimes a bit on the tops of the downs near me, but haven't seen any in my town for years.

Dont want to be ‘that’ person but we could definitely get another heatwave! Especially early September.

Early September's only just over a fortnight away. I at least want some decent rain and some breezy weather before the heat returns.

I remember Beast from the East because I went out with damp hair and it froze.

The heat has wrecked my MH even further. I've tried to enjoy/ think happy thoughts/ buy plants/tidy drawers ( retired ). It's hateful. I can't go out, I can't afford air con in my car.

I feel worried about the future.

Obviously if this weather continues we need to change things and make the country more able to cope with such heat. Similar to when we get an inch of snow and the country goes into shutdown mode. And I know that ultimately it means that the world is going to shit. But that doesn’t mean I can’t absolutely love the glorious sunshine in the meantime. Everyone complains that we have nonstop rain and miserable weather, then complains when we have nonstop sunshine.
