It’s over tomorrow, the heat is over for another year

Firstly I appreciate this is not the same for the rest of the country Flowers

but we’ve had it horrific here (London). I’ve never felt so shit in my life as I have for the last 10 weeks. I’ve spent between £250-350 a month on electricity (portable air conditioners). I’ve felt anxious, headachy, it’s FUCKED with my peri menopause (brain fog, no words, cognitive decline). I’ve felt tearful and as if it would go on forever. There are moments where I’ve thought I can’t take another moment of this. My sleep is proper fucked.

this has to change. I’ve done everything on a personsl
level I can. Air conditioners only when necessary, above 26 inside (DH has long Covid so literally throws up in heat). His asthma is exacerbated. The dogs have had the shittest summer. I’ve had a couple of rescues that can’t go out about 22 degrees. I reckon they’ve been walked briefly 3 times a week. We deliberately went away on a cheap caravan holiday twice just so they could smile. There were endless days I couldn’t work as too hot in my home office and clients cancelled.

I cannot wait til Saturday.

I hope for solidarity from others. I want to wear a fucking hoodie again. I’ve spent every day sat around in my underwear inside for vast stretches of the day. This is not sexy.

I like rain. I’m from up north. I feel happy in rain. Happier in 15 degrees though. Fuck me I love a scarf. I own hundreds.

Me too! I want jackets, jumpers, boots and thick tights.

PeriPeriMayo · Yesterday 22:58

There's a less than 20% chance of rain in my area all next week. So yes the temp will be lower but still in the middle 20s and very unlikely to rain, hardly 'over'.

Supersimkin7 · Yesterday 22:59

I clicked with such hope.

The forecasts are always reasonable ten days ahead.

Thd closer you get, the more they go up.

It is 30 degrees in my bedroom right now, I just went upstairs and checked.

DorisTheFinkasaurus · Yesterday 23:00

Hear fucking hear, OP. Absolutely everything you’ve written has been a mirror of my life this summer. I know 26 is still hot but my God, I’ll grab it. We’re in a collective crisis. Mother Nature is shrieking from the rooftops, yet all our global leaders want are weapons and military buildup and fossil fuels and data centres and drones and all the other bullshit that’s fucking the planet from every angle.

cowasballerina · Yesterday 23:00

Was 36c today, 30c tomorrow then 24c Saturday. Still a tad hot for me Saturday, but by god I'll take it!!!!

Hillsmakeyoustrong · Yesterday 23:00

Total solidarity. I have really struggled along with my kids and dogs. Im looking out on brown fields everywhere, its been paralysing.

LaurieFairyCake · Yesterday 23:01

The middle 20’s with the blissful 16 in the early morning is the normal summers day. Not the mental mess we’ve suffered.

OP, I am absolutely totally with you. It’s been a diabolical summer.

You needed to join the Heatwave Support Thread on here.

Lentilcakes · Yesterday 23:02

Thank fucking god!! I’m also in London and I felt I was boiling alive today just having to walk to/from bus too top to work.
Its been almost impossible to concentrate on work and my house is like an oven - built for warmth.

Awful for people who’ve lost their homes - something needs to be done about the climate crisis now.

HappiestSleeping · Yesterday 23:04

@LaurieFairyCake I was listening to a meteorologist on the radio this morning who thinks this is the coolest summer we will ever have again. I hope they were wrong.

Cucurella · Yesterday 23:04

I’m in London and I’ve loved this warm summer weather. I think people have short memories about how grey and dismal and wet January and February were this year. It was relentless and depressing.

slightlysmallerPoisonIvy · Yesterday 23:05

"I want to wear a fucking hoodie again."

^This. And I want to sleep under a duvet. And I want to wrap up in a cosy blanket while I watch tv

I'm fed up and it feels like it's never going to end. I woke up at 8am this morning and it was already 31 degrees ffs

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · Yesterday 23:07

I have NEVER been this excited for autumn/winter before. I am miserable being hot all the time. My head kills, I cant sleep and fed up of just feeling so...moist. Heading up north for a holiday next week and its meant to rain all week. Cant wait!

Tel12 · Yesterday 23:07

33c predicted for us, it's not over till it's over

holy fuck nuts. I hope that’s not true. NOW I’m depressed, that’s so fucking arse.

Horrible to see so much of Europe burn, firefighters die, homes and all that wildlife gone. I love summer normally, long days, warm nights finally feeling cool but it's been horrible, too hot. Even the tortoise who normally thrives in the warm has found it too much!

cowasballerina · Yesterday 23:08

I will never moan again about any dismal wet January and february.

PacificState · Yesterday 23:08

I totally empathise with everything you’ve said in your OP (my poor dog has been so miserable, my lawn is proper dead, I last concentrated some time in early May, I was in southwest France when Bordeaux was on fire…) and the long term implications are genuinely terrifying.

But… if this is the end (and I hope it is) I will also remember this as the first time London has felt actually Mediterranean (sadly without the sea); light clothing, hugging the shadows, the air in the evening the same temperature as my blood, iced coffee because you actually need the ice, the smell of hot vegetation, walking around in sandals at 11pm. It’s been memorable, for sure.

This kind of attitude is so selfish and depressing. So glad you’re ‘loving’ the summer whilst people’s homes have burned down, critical incidents have been declared by fire services around the country over the last two months and farmers have said they won’t have enough hay to feed their livestock as there is no grass for them to eat. Ariel shots show the land is suffering, animals have dyed from the drought. But hey ho, you’re loving summer so that’s all okay then. By the way this isn’t a normal summer, this is a warning sign.

HangingOver · Yesterday 23:10

Having spent a lot of time in west aus I don't mind the heat so much but my doggy is permanently brain-offline at the moment. He's hot, bothered, tired and bored all at once.

LaurieFairyCake · Yesterday 23:10

I bought 2 pairs of leather knee high brand new boots on Vinted today. I was literally WISHING it into being.

top tip - buy out of season. Cashmere on Vinted is under £15 as opposed to the £250 brand new in about a months time

Lol, no, with you there! All my life I've said "roll on summer" when faced with dreary winter weather. This year for the first time I've said "roll on winter".

Here’s how to have a balanced view without sounding like a selfish idiot. The previous poster could learn a lot from this.

shuggles · Yesterday 23:11

@LaurieFairyCake I hope it is over. The heat is disgusting and it is not hygienic.

What doesn't help either is every stupid tabloid coming out with stupid headlines like "phwwwoooaarrr, super scorchio!" or "embrace the mediterranean!"
