Rom coms where the leads have chemistry

It being the summer holidays, I am currently in the market for lightweight frothy crap. I've been watching rom coms on Netflix basically at random, whatever it suggests of extremely varied quality. But the main characters just look like they are acting a role.

One of my most recent watches had Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat/Ali G) as the romantic lead (I shit you not), with Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) supposedly falling for him. All the romance of a dental filling, it couldn't have been less convincing.

I swear back in the day rom com leads didn't merely look like colleagues. Has anyone seen any good ones lately where they actually have chemistry?

All The Light We Cannot See. Michael Fassbender / Alicia Vikander actually fell in love making this.

I think that was The Light Between Oceans.

You’ve reminded me - George Clooney & Jennifer Lopez in Out of Sight.

Saw it years and years ago and just remember really enjoying it and thinking they had great chemistry. I need to watch it again though to check myself - I’m often disappointed watching films I loved at the time, because not all that many age well!

Yes. I was trying to remember the name of that movie. There was fantastic chemistry between them.

While You Were Sleeping, if you can tolerate a Christmassy movie in the summer. Bill Pullman and Sandra Bullock were made for each other 😍

CypressMoon · 13/08/2026 19:01

Also Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer in Frankie and Johnny

Oh I loved this film when it came out. Bill Pullman and Sandra Bullock are just great together.

Might watch it to ogle the snow.

Also enjoy The Proposal for a bit more Sandra Bullock.

They were great together on screen. Electric. I loved the clothes 😂

Thirding Moonlighting.

though like a previous poster said, I’m not sure about re-watching in case it doesn’t stand up after (eeek) about 40 years… how is that even possible??!!

Yes the memory of some things is better!

I went to see a 'boy band' that I followed as a Teenager. Bad mistake..... 😂

Just trying to pick a film for tonight from this thread and omg trying to find one that they don't want to charge me to watch is a bloody nightmare. I've got all the streaming services, all of which contain a billion films, but they think they can charge me for a film that came out in the 90s while letting me watch The Sheep Detectives for free??

Definitely not a romcom but the mention of Harrison Ford made me think of Witness. The dance scene with Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis is so romantic.

Lovely film.

noblegiraffe · 13/08/2026 22:04

I'm surprised anyone suggesting Kelly McGillis having chemistry with anyone as she had zero with Tom Cruise in Top Gun. I mean, surely anyone would manage it with Tom Cruise.

I find Tom Cruise a bit scary. There's something a bit off-putting about him 🤷

Gowlett · 13/08/2026 22:16

Not a rom-com (or is it?). Dirty Dancing.

TotallyFloored · 13/08/2026 22:17

OMG that dance scene in witness and Working Girl - but I do have a Harrison ford love that will last for eternity.

I’d see those and raise you The Big Easy with Dennis quad and Ellen barkin - smouldering heat there !

Tom Cruise never did it for me, so I’m with Kelly if she just dialled it in…

I'm currently watching my way through Younger on Amazon Prime. Essentially, it's about a 40 year old woman who gave up her career when she had a baby and has to get back to work on the break up of her marriage. After being chatted up in a bar by a twenty something who assumes she's the same age as he is, she puts in an application for a role as a junior assistant and gets the job. There's magnetic attraction with her and the boss but he believes she's far too young for him and she can't give the game away. There's also real chemistry between her and the guy in the bar. Some interesting plot twists.

Not usually my kind of thing and I can't believe it's held my attention through 6 series. One more to go! It's frothy but funny and most of the characters are great.

I loved this! Definitely recommend and it is worth watching to the end!

I was going to add
Crazy Rich Asians (but the male lead is both Impossibly handsome and an impossibly decent human being)
The Ugly Truth
The Mallorca Files
And a truly ancient light hearted drama from my childhood called the Upper Hand

powershowerforanhour · 13/08/2026 22:38

Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta Jones looked like they enjoyed making The Mask of Zorro.

Yessss. Their chemistry is fantastic.

"It being the summer holidays, I am currently in the market for lightweight frothy crap."

As an opening sentence, that is up there with Jane Austen's best 😁.

Chemistry and froth abounds in:

Sleeping With Other People
Palm Springs
Say Anything
Crazy Stupid Love
Hit Man*
Working Girl
Almost Famous
Office Romance
Bull Durham
Juliette Naked
The Truth About Cats and Dogs
Falling in Love
Silver Linings Playbook*
Richard Linklater's Before trilogy
Witness*
The Big Easy
Romancing The Stone
Strictly Ballroom

*Heavy on the chemistry, lighter on the froth

mixedpeel · 13/08/2026 23:16

@Splcam good call on Strictly Ballroom.

i must be a curmudgeon because I realised I can’t think of many films where I’ve felt the leads really had chemistry, but Strictly Ballroom ticks that box. And many other boxes too. Great film. Rom and actual com.

(my fave emotional hit is the dad though)

SummerNocturnal · 13/08/2026 23:27

Palm Springs and Hit Man were both fantastic

lavendarwillow · 13/08/2026 23:27

I watched A Good Year with Russell Crowe the other night, it was a good romantic comedy.

Absolutely - in the big dance denouement when he steps out of the audience clapping his hands, I immediately well up!

We need a Glenn Powell/Andy Samberg dysfunctional buddy comedy.

@Piglet89yes! Love this programme and they definitely have a lot of chemistry. My teen crush on Adam Brody came back in full swing!!!

Ok, I just started watching this (Nobody Wants This) and I was expecting Adrien Brody to turn up. He did not, and I now apologise for thinking that you had a weird crush on him. Should read more carefully!
