Rom coms where the leads have chemistry

It being the summer holidays, I am currently in the market for lightweight frothy crap. I've been watching rom coms on Netflix basically at random, whatever it suggests of extremely varied quality. But the main characters just look like they are acting a role.

One of my most recent watches had Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat/Ali G) as the romantic lead (I shit you not), with Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) supposedly falling for him. All the romance of a dental filling, it couldn't have been less convincing.

I swear back in the day rom com leads didn't merely look like colleagues. Has anyone seen any good ones lately where they actually have chemistry?

Alao i liked the movie redeeming love but its a challenging tale with much adversity. A young woman who has been abused from childhood and put into a brothel by her owner as an adult. Set in old western times. She has no feelings left and a young man falls in love with her and persists to offer her a better life and he genuinly loves her and treats her very well, she just doesnt know how to deal with that and dips in and out of her old abusive life thinking the young man deserves better, but he lloves her. Great story but some harrowing scenes. Hes a lovely man to her and very patient and caring.

Heated Rivalry on Now TV if you don't mind gay relationships. They sizzle! It's a bit ... saucy though.

This is Us - not a rom com but I believe in Jack and Rebecca.

Another vote for Out of Sight.

I recently watched The Notebook (2004) for the first time. I thought that Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams were good together although it was James Garner who really moved me.

Not a RomCom but Kevin Costner & Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard.

That was as real as it gets.

PP mentioned Working Girl as an oldie but goodie. It's nearly forty years old but still has something to say about raw talent and ambition butting up against entitlement and privilege. Harrison Ford is the epitome of the handsome, honourable Hollywood star and Melanie Griffith is Marilyn Monroe like in her statuesque costumes. There's definitely some smouldering charisma between them!
Cinematography and soundtrack are great. Very much of its time but worth a watch if you want light and frothy.

Set It Up. Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell. Probably more comedy than romance, but the romance that is there is adorable. Lucy liu and Taye Diggs are hilarious in supporting roles.

Warm Bodies. Nicholas Hoult may play a zombie but he and Teresa Palmer are so cute! Gives all the warm, fuzzy feelings.

Maid in Manhattan with Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes. A bit silly but such good fun and Ralph is very swoon worthy.

Definitely not a romcom but the mention of Harrison Ford made me think of Witness. The dance scene with Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis is so romantic.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 13/08/2026 03:11

Another vote for office romance with the delicious Brett Goldstein.

I also watched a film last year with George Clooney and Julia Roberts called Ticket to Paradise and they were both really believable in it.

I haven't seen that in years. I'll have to see if I can stream it?

Can’t believe someone upthread said Notting Hill - I love both Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts but together I thought they were dreadful with no chemistry at all! How funny. I just don’t think also she would have found him attractive like she did as he was such an annoying bumbling character.
but hey what do I know, mega successful film so loads of people must have loved it.

I loved the film (his flatmate was hilarious) but agree there was no chemistry.

sparrowhawkhere · 13/08/2026 06:26

I think The Notebook for chemistry and just a beautiful film. The older couple are just as lovely.
The family stone is such a weird film in a way but I love it and watch it a few times a year.

When Harry Met Sally

No!!! I never for one minute believed that gorgeous woman would go for that tetchy, plain dork of a man.

I sort of agree. Its a perfect script, very well acted by both leads and Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby, gorgeous cinematography, but did I really think Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal had chemistry? not sure. Still bloody love it though.

A Room With a View?

I'm currently watching my way through Younger on Amazon Prime. Essentially, it's about a 40 year old woman who gave up her career when she had a baby and has to get back to work on the break up of her marriage. After being chatted up in a bar by a twenty something who assumes she's the same age as he is, she puts in an application for a role as a junior assistant and gets the job. There's magnetic attraction with her and the boss but he believes she's far too young for him and she can't give the game away. There's also real chemistry between her and the guy in the bar. Some interesting plot twists.

Not usually my kind of thing and I can't believe it's held my attention through 6 series. One more to go! It's frothy but funny and most of the characters are great.

You’ve reminded me - George Clooney & Jennifer Lopez in Out of Sight.

Saw it years and years ago and just remember really enjoying it and thinking they had great chemistry. I need to watch it again though to check myself - I’m often disappointed watching films I loved at the time, because not all that many age well!

I can confirm that Out Of Sight is still a GREAT movie. Not usually a fan of Jennifer Lopez but she is good in this and they clearly had great chemistry. Fantastic cast throughout too. Well worth rewatching.

The Thomas Crown Affair with Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo. Not actually a rom com but still...

An old one and a bit leftfield but Harold & Maude is a great romantic comedy with beautiful chemistry between the eponymous leads.

Annie Hall too if Woody Allen is still acceptable.

minnowonthesay · 13/08/2026 16:52

@OllyBJolly I have loved Younger! I’ve seen all of them now and can’t believe I didn’t start watching it until they made series 7. All of the characters were so likeable which is a big thing for me.

I liked Nobody Wants This too.

Also The Madison and Virgin River (until it goes weird😂)

The Perfect Couple is good too - that’s a murder mystery though.

Ohhhhh I love Harold&Maude .
Everyone looks blank when I mention this .

Now I'm going off to listen to If You Want to Sing Out (Cat Stevens)
