Rom coms where the leads have chemistry

It being the summer holidays, I am currently in the market for lightweight frothy crap. I've been watching rom coms on Netflix basically at random, whatever it suggests of extremely varied quality. But the main characters just look like they are acting a role.

One of my most recent watches had Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat/Ali G) as the romantic lead (I shit you not), with Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) supposedly falling for him. All the romance of a dental filling, it couldn't have been less convincing.

I swear back in the day rom com leads didn't merely look like colleagues. Has anyone seen any good ones lately where they actually have chemistry?

Just Married with Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy.

Another one with Brittany Murphy and LOTS of chemistry is 8 Mile. Although not a rom com… but a fantastic film.

HollyhockDays · 12/08/2026 18:38

All The Light We Cannot See. Michael Fassbender / Alicia Vikander actually fell in love making this.

She was great in Clueless as well. I still feel sad about her death, she was 5 years older than me but felt such a shock when she died so young. I watched that documentary about her life and subsequent death and it was just really sad, such a waste of a beautiful and really good actress.

Not a rom com but Outlander series on Prime. Chemistry is brilliant between Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan.

The Wedding Singer
I love Adam Sandler in anything and he matches so well with Drew Barrymore

hotmumshit · 12/08/2026 18:48

Agree with JLo & Clooney in Out of Sight & Outlander.

Set it up - Zoey Deutch & Glen Powell have a nice chemistry.

ssonoss · 12/08/2026 20:23

Rye Lane (think it’s still on iPlayer)

upinaballoon · 12/08/2026 21:49

Not a rom com, quite serious in some parts, but funny in others - 'Mississippi Masala'.

likeitshard · 12/08/2026 21:59

I always thought Patrick swayze and Jennifer grey had great chemistry in dirty dancing but apparently they didn’t particularly get on.

custardbonbon · 12/08/2026 22:00

Not ‘Nobody Wants This’ - the lead woman is so irritating I can’t care what happens to them!

Never Been Kissed.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 12/08/2026 22:00

It Happened One Night - Claudette Colbert and Clark Gabriel (1934)

Both great actors. ♥️♥️

Another vote for Office Romance. Also The Holiday (a bit Christmassy, but so lovely) and Just Like Heaven with Reese Witherspoon - if you’re looking for froth, 13 going on 30 and Friends with Benefits are fun. Outlander is great but it’s quite heavy in parts, especially the first season.

RunningRhino · 12/08/2026 22:10

Office finance and nobody wants this agreed

Highonmyownsupply · 12/08/2026 22:12

Thomas Crown Affair. Both the original and the remake.

Grosse Pointe Blank - John Cusack & Minnie Driver are the most believably hot, natural chemistry couple. Love that film!

Also John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale in Serendipity. Despite appearances, I don’t have a mad John Cusack crush and I’m not a big fan of hers either, but again it’s a film that really has you rooting for them.

And Kate Hudson/Matthew McConnaughey in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Film is patchy at best, but there’s no denying you want them to make it. Plus you get to see the reveal of The Dress every time, which is never not stunning ❤️

I was coming on to say How To Lose....

Also, 40 days and 40 nights.

And 10 Things I Hate About You and a Knights Tale. Latter isn't technically a rom com but it meets the needs

poundshopkardashians · 12/08/2026 22:17

Can’t believe someone upthread said Notting Hill - I love both Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts but together I thought they were dreadful with no chemistry at all! How funny. I just don’t think also she would have found him attractive like she did as he was such an annoying bumbling character.
but hey what do I know, mega successful film so loads of people must have loved it.

Blossom1818 · 12/08/2026 22:25

Never been kissed, the wedding singer if you want a longer series the office US, Superstore or one day are good

bitontheobtuse · 12/08/2026 23:17

Oldie sitcom tv series - Moonlighting with Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd. 😂

Dizzierblonde · 12/08/2026 23:18

Some real oldies, but they're my comfort movies.
The Philadelphia Story - off the chart chemistry with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. So good.
Before Sunrise
Pride and Prejudice (the Keira Knightly and Matthew MacFadyen one)
Gross Point Blanke
Working Girl
Out of Sight

Have you seen Long Shot? I really liked that. Seth Rogan and Charlize Theron. Was cute.

The Long shot is a good one and really funny too!

I liied.the show love.life, ive only seen season 1 and enjoyed it.

I liked off campus too.

A fav romance movie of mine is The Lucky One, based off Nicholas Sparks book - its his only book with a written hpapy ending as far as Im aware, ive watched it several times!

I liked purple hearts, although a bit.cheesy!

The tv show one day, the movie is good. But the tv show was better imo.
