Waiter dropped a pizza on me and caused a burn and ruined my dress (Joe browns) what is the least you would expect?

this happened yesterday. We just arrived in Pisa and went for lunch. The waiter brought the food over and as he was leaning over an entire, burning hot pizza slid off the plate and all down me. He apologised and started crying so went inside. I have a nasty burn on my tummy, plus it ruined my dress, bag and trainers. We were given a bill for the full amount, and we queried it with the manager. What would you expect in this situation?

Accidents happen.
Noone died.

Obvious the OP kicked off and became threatening and that is why the police were called.

So much drama. I know exactly the kind of person the OP is.

Absolute bollocks. They threatened to call the police because OP and her companions were suggesting, quite reasonably, that she shouldn't pay for the meal that ended up in her lap.

Again, they threatened to call the police. The OP did not say they actually called the police. I think you are being very unfair to the OP.

Not being funny but the police wouldn’t come out if she was calm and asking to not pay!

So would you take that attitude if, say, someone caused severe burn injuries to your child through sheer carelessness? Would you be saying to your child "Too bad you're covered in scars and can't use your arm, but no-one died"?

And they didn't come out, because the restaurant didn't call them. It was a threat they made to intimidate someone who was already distressed and in pain.

Or because OP and her family were very threatening?

Why did you omit that the restaurant called the police from your OP?

Why did they have to do so?

Something tells me she omitted it because they didn't call the police. Try reading her posts properly.

Did the pizza cause 3rd degree burns?

MosquitoFace · 11/08/2026 12:13

I’d expect a two page spread in a local newspaper with a fitting compo face photo at least!

Yes, they are. They’re harmless incidents that sometimes occur.

How is it harmless if someone has been caused a life-changing injury? Or even a paintul burn?

I promise you they would, in Italy, based on personal experience.

Cherrytree86 · 11/08/2026 12:15

urghh some of you are such wusses..”don’t make a fuss” BE KIND, OP!!

also those saying you should have had free desserts - Op had a burn on her stomach, she will have been in pain, hardly inclined to chop on a cheesecake.

that restaurant needs to be giving you a couple of hundred quid, OP so you can replace what has been ruined

I think we all know the type of person you are too.

Op I would expect a free meal but I wouldn't ask for dry cleaning compensation.

Did the pizza cause life changing injuries?

So it only classes as ‘harm’ if it’s life changing?
I think you need a dictionary.

OK, so where is your dividing line, and what is the logic behind it? You seem to accept that compensation would be due in that case, despite the fact that the injury was potentially caused by precisely the same accident. What if the burn is very serious but not life changing? What if it is serious? What if it is still causing pain a week later? A few days?

And is there any reason at all why OP should pay for a pizza she couldn't eat as a direct result of the waiter's carelessness?

Couple of hundred quid?
Fully pay for their hoilday and get their return flights upgraded to business class.

Upgrade their hotel accommodation to 5 star all inclusive too.

Cherrytree86 · 11/08/2026 12:18

Surely NO ONE thinks OP should pay for the pizza that was spilled on her and burned her, do they?!

PeterRabbitsWhiskers · 11/08/2026 12:18

Sereine · 11/08/2026 12:00

Travel insurance would expect you to claim off the restaurant's insurance.

They can go and claim their losses from the third party if they choose.

@Dexternight

a couple of hundred quid is to cover the damage caused. Why should OP be out of pocket?!

I don’t know what type of person you are but I’ve spent a lot of time in Italy and never had the police called on me!

Our crime was using a laundrette, and eating our dinner, which happened to be a pizza, in ourcampervan while we waited.

Tbh the police were as bemused as we were - but they did attend!
