Waiter dropped a pizza on me and caused a burn and ruined my dress (Joe browns) what is the least you would expect?

this happened yesterday. We just arrived in Pisa and went for lunch. The waiter brought the food over and as he was leaning over an entire, burning hot pizza slid off the plate and all down me. He apologised and started crying so went inside. I have a nasty burn on my tummy, plus it ruined my dress, bag and trainers. We were given a bill for the full amount, and we queried it with the manager. What would you expect in this situation?

thank you all for the replies, here’s what happened.

they didn’t offer anything. They billed for the full amount (I didn’t eat anything in the end) and we reminded them whst happened and asked for a discount. They refused, got aggressive and threatened to call police!

also I was really nice to the waiter when it happened, told him accidents happen and not to worry, etc, so I wasn’t arsey as such, I just found it surprising and upsetting that it happened, and they could see the damaged items so I thought they would offer a discount. But no …..

Why did you omit that the restaurant called the police from your OP?

Why did they have to do so?

AlohaRose · 11/08/2026 11:16

OP, it is slightly like getting blood out of a stone to get details from you 😀After they threatened to call the police, what happened? I would have suggested that they did so! Also, were they trying to charge you for the pizza which the waiter chucked over you? Or did they provide a replacement pizza?

MyDarlingRose · 11/08/2026 11:16

@snoopywifeif it helps I once went to a restaurant where the waiter tripped and swilled me with a glass of Prosecco. Right across the face. He went to replace it and did the exact same thing again - whole glass right in my eyes.

THEN HE BILLED ME FOR BOTH GLASSES.

They threatened to call the police, presumably to make them pay the bill.

LondonLass2026 · 11/08/2026 11:16

Meal for free, and dress to be dry cleaned. Not sure what they can do about bag and trainers. They're not going to buy you new ones.

I once went to an event, and someone knocked over a supersize Pepsi on my beautiful and expensive handbag, and destroyed it. She quickly walked off and there was nothing I could do. Accidents happen. The cow could have apologised though.

Really surprised they've billed you the full amount for the dinner.

Wadsworthy · 11/08/2026 11:16

Was it a standard tourist restaurant? If so, I suspect you won't get any joy. A lot of tourists can be appalling when they're on holidays - complaining and wanting discounts. Of course, you have a real gripe, but I suspect that the restaurant is inured to tourist complaints, because there are so many bad faith actors.

Unless you were negotiating in Italian?

What happened next? How on earth did he manage to accidentally throw wine in your face twice?

gonnabehotagain · 11/08/2026 11:18

Why is it relevant that the dress was Joe Browns? Surely it’s an issue as much as if it was a Primark or a Chanel dress.
Sounds like the waiter cried because the management are such arseholes (shows they are if they won’t give the pizza for free) and he is probably at risk of getting the sack.

You should have just let them call the police. Unlikely they would but if they did the police would have reasoned with them.

He slipped a little bit when going to place it on the table (we were down a little step into an alcove) so the glasses kind of spun in his hand a bit and whipped the fluid into my face. It was really bizarre.

Thankfully it was in the UK and when the bill came I reminded him that he’d actually thrown both of those glasses in my face and the manager removed them from the bill and gave us a free bottle to share. It was still a bit shit because I was then damp, cold and looked like a panda but I wasn’t out of pocket.

ginasevern · 11/08/2026 11:26

@Aluna "You should have just let them call the police. Unlikely they would but if they did the police would have reasoned with them."

She could've let him call the police and he probably would have, but unless her Italian is very good I wouldn't fancy her chances. If the restaurant was in the Piazza dei Miracoli it is full of tourist traps with ruthless owners I'm afraid. Not much help now I know, but from now on try to find small family run trattorie in the back streets OP.

Ordonot · 11/08/2026 11:28

A bar tender accidently threw an entire glass of red wine over dh and I - my coat was ruined - it couldn't be cleaned immediately because we were travelling, they wanted a receipt for dry cleaning bills and proof things were stained permanently - we had already paid for our meal and our drinks. I was quite surprised by how difficult they were but it already had a impact on the evening, I wanted to move on.

Relaxd · 11/08/2026 11:34

If the burn is considerable you could check with a no win no fee solicitor. I did this for a hairdresser burn and got a few grand, They may however say you already accepted compensation by taking the free meal. Take photos of the burn meanwhile and email a solicitor- there’s no cost and they’ll say it they want to take it on or not. The waiter won’t be affected directly. It does have to be more than a tiny sore spot though - I was sent (at no cost) to a private clinic to confirm the wound. It was quite small though but it bloody hurt.

YoQuieroDormir · 11/08/2026 11:35

itsbinmadness · 11/08/2026 10:26

Yes, they are. They’re harmless incidents that sometimes occur.

How was it ‘harmless’? She suffered a burn. That is ‘harm’, is it not?

WerewolfOfLoudon · 11/08/2026 11:37

@snoopywife If you were burned why didn't you leave immediately to get proper treatment? Or at least ask for their first Aid kit? Did you just sit there while everyone else ate their meal and then complain after the food had been eaten?

The police would have at least told you that the restaurant's 3rd party liability insurance is there to pay for damages. Your travel insurance covers medical costs.

troothfairy · 11/08/2026 11:37

So did they replace your pizza and you didn’t eat it while your other half tucked into his? Did you have it boxed up to take away?

I’d have expected free everything, in fact I’d have just walked out the minute they seemed unhelpful.

In contrast my daughter went to a UK restaurant yesterday, drinks came pronto but food took an hour. They apologised profusely and took the meals off the bill.

Well I hope by the very least you get busy on Google, Trust pilot etc and give them a terrible review.

Because it's Italy, they call the police for anything and everything. I had a police and pizza incident as well.

AuntieBiotics · 11/08/2026 11:30

Obvious the OP kicked off and became threatening and that is why the police were called.

So much drama. I know exactly the kind of person the OP is.

Haha! Police and pizza 'incident'. OK!

WyrdHag · 11/08/2026 11:52

At this point I'm not sure there's much you can do aside from keeping an eye on the burn (take photos) in case you want to take it further at a later date.

Have you had medical attention for it? Ice is really not the way to treat a burn - it needs cold, slow running water for 20 minutes, ice can cause more damage.

I know someone who did this and the result was not great - definitely get checked out if it starts to blister.

SpaceRaccoon · 11/08/2026 11:58

TizzymyLove · 11/08/2026 11:50

Haha! Police and pizza 'incident'. OK!

Mine luckily didn't come with burns at least.

We were holidaying in our campervan and stopped at a laundrette. We ate some pizza in the van while we waited for the clothes to be ready, and then just as we we heading back to the van, piles of clean folded clothing in our arms, the police arrived.

One of the people who lived round about had called them on us for... not even sure exacty. The police looked bemused and waved us on our way.

It wasn't even a posh area.

Sereine · 11/08/2026 12:00

PeterRabbitsWhiskers · 11/08/2026 09:38

An apology, a free meal and claim on travel insurance for any losses.

Travel insurance would expect you to claim off the restaurant's insurance.

Take a photo of the injury and the damaged clothes, check out the replacement cost, and write to the restaurant saying you want compensation for damages and the injury. Ask them for details of their insurers.

Also leave reviews everywhere detailing their shitty attitude to injuring you.
