How would you split the cost of a holiday cottage for family. Per person or room.

I’m looking at potential holiday rentals for family get together. Do you split the cost per person or per room. For example a single person in one single room V 2 parents and one child in one triple room. Also single adult in double room. The party is made up of 3 single adults all wanting own room, couple with child (who would also like own room but tricky due to expense) and another couple.

The couple pay half the price each for half the room each.

Two singles sharing pay half the price each for half the room each.

One single wanting a double room to themselves has to pay the whole price for the whole room.

There is no reason why a person with a whole room to themselves should not expect to pay for the whole room that they are occupying.

Depends if its a single room verses a big double room with en-suite for example.

Waterbaby41 · 10/08/2026 21:44

Per adult, kids go free.

always split per person. You can’t expect two adults (who aren’t a couple) unless they’re best mates to share a room.

If they want a whole room to themselves, they need to pay for a whole room to themselves.

It doesn't matter whether a couple mind sharing or not, simply, they are sharing and therefore only have half a room each. Therefore they only should pay for half a room each.

I'm so sick of entitled singles thinking that couples/families should subsidise them. Want a whole room to yourself? Then pay for the whole room. Want to pay for half a room only? Then share with someone. Just like the couples have to.

I remember going on a weekend trip, all single travellers, as in no DP with us and the cost was split equally. I was pretty miffed to be given a tiny single room with a toilet in a cupboard when others were given a decent room with sea views.

Are the rooms equally sized, if so by room.... if not, bow out of arranging and pass to someone else.

Yes, I agree, and have said repeatedly, room size snd facilities should be taken into account.

It's utterly ridiculous for 3 people squashed into one room to be expected to pay three times the price of the single person having the luxury of the whole room to themselves.

If it's a per person rate, the 16yo needs his own room, and sharers get the best rooms, reflecting they're paying double per room. It's still families subsidising the singles as always.

Per room rate, with uplift in cost for the best room/facilities is always fairer.

Edited

I never said they would be paying 3x? If child shares then cost should be per adult not per person. Plus the family gets best room.

OneNewEagle · 10/08/2026 21:56

I’d split by sevenths as seven adults. Also 16 is too old to share so kid needs their own room.

Mamabear487 · 10/08/2026 21:58

We go away every year on a uk break and split it per person and exclude the kids so only the adults pay. There is 6 of us plus parters and then mum/dad. 2 of us have kids the rest don’t but everyone gets a room so it makes no difference to us not charging the kids. Works best for us!

stichguru · 10/08/2026 21:58

In your case I think per room. Normally I would say per person, but it doesn't seem fair if all the singles have chosen to have double rooms and the child is sharing. If the singles were being made to take the same space as two people of a couple, because you couldn't find anywhere with single rooms, then it would be fair they paid half the same space, but if they have chosen to take a big space they should pay for the space.

ThatLemonBee · 10/08/2026 21:59

Yes per room imo , so if someone has 2 kids and need s2 rooms pays more as a example but a couple pays teh same as a single person using a separate bedroom

dcthatsme · 10/08/2026 22:00

I'd split per room unless the single people's rooms are box rooms. If they are then by person.

Joey1024 · 10/08/2026 22:02

We do cost split per adult in this situation. The 2 couples with kids tend to bring/host/plan more which evens it out but this is the dynamic anyway so would happen regardless

TeaFizzy · 10/08/2026 22:03

Per room for accommodation, per person (including teenagers) for food - although that’s not relevant if OP is covering all the food and drink.

Possibly tweak slightly depending on if the rooms are very different in terms of desirability.

It totally depends who the singles are, you’re assuming it would be reasonable to expect them to share but it could be a 75 year old great aunt and a 29 year old nephew, of course you can’t just assume people can be lumped in to share a room.

LittleJustice · 10/08/2026 22:06

We always used to split it per room because we used to go as a family and take my mom and my single brother and we would have to pay a lot more for a big Villa to accommodate them whereas we would have been able to all fit in a one-bed apartment with a sofa bed otherwise. So splitting it per room seemed to work out fairest for us.

You make it sound like the couples sharing and singles sharing is exactly the same, of course it’s not.

A couple sharing will always share a bed, they likely live together, two singles don’t, if sharing is so simple just mix everyone up, who cares if you’re in a couple, here’s a room with three beds and one of the singles is coming in with you, like it or not :)

LumpyandBumps · 10/08/2026 22:19

I suspect that there will never be an entirely fair way to split the costs in accommodation where there are also shared areas.
If all bedrooms were exactly the same size and all had en suites it might be easier.
People will want accommodation according to the needs of their ‘unit’. Couples will normally choose to share. Single people will want their own room. It’s not a luxury or entitled to seek accommodation to meet your needs, or unreasonable not to want to share a room with a person with whom you are not in a relationship.
I am not actually against the starting principle of paying per room, but there are some caveats. If the rooms are not all en-suite then the single occupants of rooms are subsiding bathrooms for the double or triple occupancy rooms, similarly space in the lounge, etc.
It can’t be the case that there is no value attached to shared areas.
Even if the split is done just using bedrooms and forgetting the shared spaces, a single person in a room with one single bed should not pay the same as a large family room with 3 beds, so there needs to be some adjustment made. Maybe every room should be given a price depending upon size and facilities and everyone given a free choice. I’m perfectly willing to pay a premium for having single use of a double room, but if I’ve paid the same as a couple I’m
not going to accept a small room.

It's not the same, but 2 people sharing have half a room each so should only pay for half a room each. It's that simple.

If I go away with a group of girl friends, I have the choice to share with someone and pay for half a room, or have a room to myself and pay for the whole room. I don't expect to have a double room to myself and pay the same as someone who has only half a room as they are sharing with one of the other girls.

2026letsgo · 10/08/2026 22:22

That is a great formula !

Theres an issue when one single has to have a single room and one gets a big double or a balcony or whatever. But maybe the better rooms could be £XYZ more and the crap room £XYZ less.

Spartak · 10/08/2026 22:24

As a long term single person, if I was paying per room, and only using a single person's share of the communal areas, hot tub etc, I'd expect the best bedroom.

It's irritating to pay per room and then get shoved in the tiny bedroom with a small double bed just because I'm on my own.

It’s a family though so shared spaces are meant to be shared and compromised .
Different when theres friends and you might have different ideas on using the kitchen or watching films on the TV .

Yes of course a small single shouldn't be charged the same as an ensuite king, I don't think anyone is disputing that.
In general, I think couples are happy to pay a bit more for a bigger room since the need rhe extra space as they're sharing. So paying say £150 between them for a bigger room rather than £100 between them for a standard double.

But singles expecting 2 sharers to pay £200 for a standard double, whilst they pay £100 for an identical standard double. is ridiculous

IAmTooOldFor · 10/08/2026 22:29

Per room, 💯. We (4 siblings, partners, children, and sometimes my parents) go away every year for a weekend and it’s always been by room. There’s been occasional subsidies of a family unit needs it one year but the principle is that it’s an even split. The food element precipitates far more under breath grumbling as my sister does an awesome job of ordering it all but makes the same mistake every year of thinking that the rest of the family eat like her family unit - mountains of soggy salad, mushed together berries for dessert and no junk food 🤣

Well if they are paying the same they don't get the biggest room, it would have to be done by lots. Personally I'd prefer to pay for 2 adults and guarantee the biggest room than pay per room and be in a free for all where we could end up with 3 of us squished into the smallest room.
