How would you split the cost of a holiday cottage for family. Per person or room.

I’m looking at potential holiday rentals for family get together. Do you split the cost per person or per room. For example a single person in one single room V 2 parents and one child in one triple room. Also single adult in double room. The party is made up of 3 single adults all wanting own room, couple with child (who would also like own room but tricky due to expense) and another couple.

I’d split per Person

Besidemyselfwithworry · 10/08/2026 19:44

Per person definately

Winederlust · 10/08/2026 19:45

The fairest way in your scenario is per person.

I'd say split the accommodation by room, with a bit of a plus/minus weighting for big or ensuite or a small or single room. Then split the food per person. Under 8s count as half.

madaboutpurple · 10/08/2026 19:45

There are holiday agencies that cater for big groups but I imagine they are a premium price.

backformoreofthesame · 10/08/2026 19:45

Per adult if the child is sharing with parents

Gizlotsmum · 10/08/2026 19:46

Per bedroom

FourSevenFive · 10/08/2026 19:47

Something between.
If per person, the family of three in one room is hard done (even if the child wouldn't pay).

GrumpyPanda · 10/08/2026 19:47

Depends. If bathrooms are all shared, either per person or something in between, definitely not per room. Couples will also impact other shared areas more than single people.

Sillysausage76 · 10/08/2026 19:48

So 3 single adults all wanting double room and 1 family needing triple room?
4 rooms in total is that correct?
I think 20% each adult, although seems unfair to family they have a child and their room will be double the size of a double.

"... and another couple".

I see 7 adults and 1 child, 5 rooms.

MeMyselfAndIris · 10/08/2026 19:51

5 rooms needed. The singles don’t want a double room, but it’s hard to find a rental with enough singles. Child is 16.

Total cost divided by seven adults. Price per person.

caringcarer · 10/08/2026 19:52

I'd split per room with slight weighting if a larger room. I certainly would not charge for a small child sharing with their parents.

Unless you can find a rental with lots of single rooms the singles will each have a double room surely.

MeMyselfAndIris · 10/08/2026 19:56

What I meant is the single adults aren’t requesting a double room but will
have one anyway.

I agree with the per adult if the child is in the same rooms as the parents. The kid isn’t taking up more space. It always thinks with these things - how much do you want all the family to come?? If the property has 1 extra single room then I’d be happy to let the kid have their own room. Unless everyone is on a very tight budget then I believe in a bit of give and take and perhaps a little subsidising to ensure everyone can come and be comfortable.
In you shoes I’d be looking for a property with 6 rooms and see what is available in budget.
How old is the kid?

dontmalbeconme · 10/08/2026 19:57

Per room, but with single rooms being discounted, and a triple room being uplifted in price. It's not fair for sharers to subsidise singles to get half price double rooms.

Smartiepants79 · 10/08/2026 19:57

16 is pretty old to share if not completely necessary.

2026letsgo · 10/08/2026 19:58

Hotels are per room.
It feels unfair that a couple pays double for the same holiday and has less space. Especially since villa pricing tends to increase with the more bedrooms there are

Having said that I think you need to charge less for smaller rooms and more for the bigger ones. So the couple with child could have a cheaper small room plus a box room for their child.

Singles can double up, meaning a much smaller house needed. It's a family holiday, not sharing with strangers.

LittleGreenShoots · 10/08/2026 19:59

We always split the cost equally per adult.

I'll have my own double room then, please, as will DH.

Ibi · 10/08/2026 20:01

Obviously you can’t expect 2 adults who aren’t in a relationship to share. Everyone should have their own room, apart from the child (depending on age). Room costs should be spilt equally between the adults. If there is a spare room, I would let the child have it at no extra cost to the parents, so the total cost should be split between the adults. Everyone will be using the shared space so it evens it out. Food also spilt between all the adults.

hellotomrw · 10/08/2026 20:01

Per room the singles could share if they wanted!
