How would you split the cost of a holiday cottage for family. Per person or room.

I’m looking at potential holiday rentals for family get together. Do you split the cost per person or per room. For example a single person in one single room V 2 parents and one child in one triple room. Also single adult in double room. The party is made up of 3 single adults all wanting own room, couple with child (who would also like own room but tricky due to expense) and another couple.

Singles can double up, meaning a much smaller house needed. It's a family holiday, not sharing with strangers.

Not an option. Singles want their own room.

I'll have my own double room then, please, as will DH.

Well just ask for it?! I don’t see why that should be a problem?

FourSevenFive · 10/08/2026 20:03

Divide the price into half. One half count per room, one half per adult, put those two numbers together.

5 rooms, 7 adults

Imagine 700£ would be

350/5 = 70 per room
350/7 = 50 per adult.

Adult in solo room 120
Couple together 170
Child for free if expected to share with parents, as at 16 it is not the preference.

Obviously you can’t expect 2 adults who aren’t in a relationship to share. Everyone should have their own room, apart from the child (depending on age). Room costs should be spilt equally between the adults. If there is a spare room, I would let the child have it at no extra cost to the parents, so the total cost should be split between the adults. Everyone will be using the shared space so it evens it out. Food also spilt between all the adults.

You can't possibly think it fair that a single person having a whole double room to themselves pays just a third of what 2 adults and a 16 year old squeezed into one room pay?

Per room is the only fair way, with singles having the choice of sharing to save money if they want to, or splashing out if they want the luxury of a double room all to themselves.

JetFlight · 10/08/2026 20:06

Per room. If the teenager had their own room, then that family would pay for two rooms. The two singles could share if they want to halve costs.

Then they have to pay the full room cost for the luxury. Their choice, but it comes at a price.

shutuporsaysomething · 10/08/2026 20:09

Really surprised if the 16 year old is ok sharing with parents. Mine would not have seen that as a holiday at all (and neither would we)

Teen okay with sharing, only a couple of nights.

Why can't the other singles share if it's just a couple of nights?

In a nutshell, all the singles, including the teen should be treated the same. Either the cost is allocated per room or per person. If it's per person, everyone, regardless of family status is entitled to their own private room.

I’d prefer not to go into that.

Generally per room of course.

Why should 2 adults sharing one room pay twice the amount of someone having their own room?
Or 2 single sharing a room paying the same price as a single having their own?

Silverbirchleaf · 10/08/2026 20:19

If child is 16, then they would count as an adult, so in this case, per person. Maybe you could give a small discount for shared rooms (20%). They’re all using the rest if the holiday let equally, so not 50% discount.

As the child is 16, all food should be per person.

theneighbourhadaparrot · 10/08/2026 20:20

It depends on the rental as well.

if you would pay the same price by renting the cottage for yourself, or to maximum occupancy (and no one asks you the amount of guests)
then per room

If you pay based on the number of people, and it's specified at time of the booking, then you adapt the cost accordingly.

Per room. If singles aren't willing to share then they need to pay for the whole room they're using. Just like you would at a hotel.

Totally agree with this. If you don’t want to share a room, fine, but you pay for the room.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 10/08/2026 20:22

Per adult definitely or the single people will get the short end of the stick.

Children I would include if they get their own room, if they're sharing with parents then no

Mumtotornadoes · 10/08/2026 20:23

If I was, with my family of two adults, two children. Going to be paying per person to share a room, when a single adult having a double bed to themselves is paying a fraction of that. I'd say "ok, we'll all have our own separate rooms too then if we're paying per person." Why should I share when for the same price I can have my own bed.

StormGazing · 10/08/2026 20:25

I’d say per adult. The adults and kids I’m sure would expect to pay more than 2 single people

DancingNotDrowning · 10/08/2026 20:25

It has to be per room.

doing it by person is really odd imo

I have a family and have been away with single members of my family and would think it was completely fair. They would be very happy with a single room, but if it happened to be a double, I wouldn’t begrudge them. Why should I have the luxury of sharing a room with my husband who I feel completely comfortable being naked in front of, changing in front of, waking up and getting up at times that we are used to, snoring with?

I clarified by saying I didn’t know the age of the child, but they should get their own room if they are nearly an adult.

Can you explain how the single people would get the “short end of the stick” when actually they all want their own room, aren’t willing to share, while 2 adults sharing a room will essentially pay double?

Nope, the single adults simply would be expected to pay for what they are getting, and not be given a 50% discount at the families expense.

Either everyone is expected to share, or everyone gets their own rooms.

Single rooms should be half the price of double rooms whete available.

Not an option. Singles want their own room.

If singles are willing to buddy up.... per person.

If they are demanding own room - split per room.

FookFookFook · 10/08/2026 20:31

Per room for me seems fairest. Assuming no massive difficulties in financial circumstances.

If per person I wouldn't include the 16 year old.
