When was the last time you did a shot and how old are you?

Bonus points if you tell me what shot it was:

Me: 27, last month at my birthday party (tequila)
DH: 27 last month at my birthday party (jagerbomb, because he’s gross)
My dad: 72, last week at the pub with my nephew (who is 24) to celebrate DN getting some kind of gas safety certificate. He did a sambuca because he loves aniseed (🤢).
Step mum: doesn’t remember but “probably haven’t done on in 20 years”
My mum: 65, doesn’t do shots because “they’re gross”
DN: 18, did shots ON WEDNESDAY (!!!) but she is a student so I guess that’s acceptable.

I’m genuinely just curious. If you used to do shots back in your day but are now retired, tell me what your go to was.

We used to call them "shorts" (an unmixed neat spirit of some sort) which I guess is the same thing. So yesterday I had two neat double Appleton Estate 8 year old dark rums. I've always loved dark rum. I'm 69.

Mid 50’s. Work night out 5/6 years ago. Straight vodka, as I refuse to do Jägerbombs - and that was regarded as an acceptable alternative by the team:

42: yesterday at a wedding. I think it was Tequila Rose but not certain.

SlightlyHassled · 09/08/2026 16:30

Late 40s, never done one.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 09/08/2026 16:31

38, yesterday, SIL and I like to finish every family gathering with an Apple sourz 😂

For more hardcore than apple sourz, a Jaegerbomb about a month ago followed by a limoncello. Fucking revolting combo

Yesterday at a rum stall in a local town. Fella selling bottles of rum offered me a tester. He poured a little bit in a paper cup and I joked that I was hoping for a shot. So he bloody well poured me one lol. I’m late fifties. I drank it on an empty stomach and as I’m in a wheelchair it was an interesting journey back to the car ( dh driving) lol

57, last had tequila in approx 1991 when I was 22. Think I had 3 shots with the whole salt and lemon juice thing, felt horrific and have never done it again.

I have ordered the odd single malt whisky to nurse for an evening since that time but I don’t think anyone would regard that as ‘doing shots’.

37 and at lunch today when the waiter brought us limoncello with pudding. I feel like I have shots pretty regularly actually! Had genepy as a restaurant freebie when skiing at Easter, a few baby guinesses on a recent night out with best friend, tequila at the last reception mums drinks, the restaurant we had DH’s birthday party at makes their own fruit liquors so we served that with the pudding course…

I thought ‘doing shots’ was necking a small glass of spirit/liquor alongside your normal longer drink, rather than having something like limoncello or brandy after your dinner.

So, I was going to say it’s something I’ve never done. I prefer a longer drink, lager,
a wine spritzer or cocktails. But I’ve certainly had those little glasses of fire water they bring you on holiday (or something nice like limoncello by choice) but I wouldn’t consider this drinking shots.

Last night, some sort of cherry liqueur, I’m 54 and in Lisbon for the weekend .

Whoops75 · 09/08/2026 16:46

Baby Guinness last weekend (I’m 50)

EdinaTheConfessor · 09/08/2026 16:47

46 and a week last Friday on a work leaving do. It was a baby Guinness.

Unless you necked it in one go, that’s not the same thing as a shot.

Sixtieslamp · 09/08/2026 16:51

I’m in my 70’s and I’ve never drunk a shot. It’s never appealed to me although I do enjoy the occasional drink. I don’t drink spirits or wine, I prefer pints of lager. I’d rather have a pint of Guinness than a baby Guinness 🍻

NoArmaniNoPunani · 09/08/2026 16:51

I'm 44 and had 2 or 3 sambucca shots at the work Christmas party early December

lookatmylife · 09/08/2026 16:52

Last week-tequila. I’m 45.

baddayformeredith · 09/08/2026 16:52

Fair enough, I did it in 2. So close but no cigar!

lordbaddingham · 09/08/2026 16:54

At least six years ago, maybe on my fortieth birthday but maybe before that. I drink a lot but it's maybe wine now 😂

GreyCarpet · 09/08/2026 15:49

Blimey, that's hardcore!

Love the stuff! If we have something Greek for our tea then we will always have an ouzo shot afterwards, it’s tradition!!

MrsBeltane · 09/08/2026 17:09

Just over a year ago at a wedding, I'm 64.

ZenNudist · 09/08/2026 17:13

I thought shots were just a small drink you drink as a group... not that unusual.

toomanycoffeecups · 09/08/2026 17:14

last night. Tequila slammers x 3 . I’m 64. Great fun. Last time was on holiday last year.
