I don't want to let the gas man in. I have already cancelled twice. Every year I get warning letters.. I don't want to let anyone in. I don't want have any form of interaction. I don't want anyone physically in my house. I don't even know when they are coming. I just know its an afternoon appointment.

I appreciate you might not want medication but in some cases of severe anxiety then just therapy alone probably won't help you much. Could you even sit and talk to a therapist at this stage?

Your children are missing out on so much not being able to have friends over and having to be your shield against the world at times. That's not fair to them at all and it's no way for any of you to live.

They don't know their my shield. It jisu means theres kind of natural business and distraction. If I'm talking to my children that makes me unavailable. I don't think they have ever askef to have friends over.

It's not sustainable though, is it? Or are you thinking that this is going to be their childhood? Getting help cant possibly be harder than living like this.

I already said i have an appointment with my gp.

Kids know. On what level they know I couldn't tell you but you're honestly lying to yourself if you think they haven't noticed that their lives are different to most of their peers. It's probably WHY they've never asked to have friends over because they know, on some level, you don't do ever have anyone over.
You've also said you get your adult child to do the talking for you - that's definitely making them your shield.

Also you mentioned you don't report repairs that need doing - that's also unfair to your children if they're living in a house with broken things or that needs work doing to it.

HumberSquid · 04/08/2026 22:43

Apologies @Whyohwhy99 I missed that. I hope they can help you.

So if not medication then what? Therapy?

I don't know the answer yet

I don't tell my son to talk for me. For example if someone asked directions he would automatically just give tje directions. Also I do talk to people when I have to. I don't like it I will avoid it if I can. But I cant always.

My house isn't broken.

They don't know . I know my children

Oh @Whyohwhy99 . They know. They absolutely know. There's no way that they think this is normal. They must be able to see that other people don't live like this. You talked on a different thread about your DD not coming home because of room organisation issues. She must know that's not normal. I grew up in a household a bit like yours, in different ways. My DM refuses to admit to this day that it impacted me at all. It did.

TheBossOfMe · 04/08/2026 23:01

You sound so lovely and kind and caring on your threads. Direct some of that to yourself and get some help.

This. Your poor children, you are impacting their mental health to save your own.

Do you work??

CrystallisedGinger · 04/08/2026 23:06

I'm autistic and completely understand your reluctance to let people in. My dad was the same and coped by becoming extremely good at DIY. (He owned his own home and there was no gas.) If he couldn't do anything himself in the house then it simply didn't get done.
It's amazing how accommodating people become when you say "I'm autistic and I struggle with....." and I'd recommend explaining it like that. Be brave and good luck!

They know. That's why one instinctively does the talking. That's why they don't have friends over.

They know.

I understand this is a serious post, and I totally empathise with letting certain people (strangers) who are professionals / tradesmen etc into the home, as I used to worry about this too sometimes.

Can I add a bit of a lighthearted comment tp the thread please? (And apologies in advance as I don't want to make it sound like I'm unsympathetic, as I do understand!) Just when I read your thread title, my mind immediately thought of the scene in the comedy series Bottom, and the episode Gas Man, where he is at the door and he says "Gas man! I've come to read your meter!"

Cue frantic running around from Eddie and Ritchie trying to get the hose out of the hole in the wall from where they've siphoned off next door's gas! 🤣

Anyway... sorry, OP. On a more serious note, I do hope you can find the courage to get the Gas man to visit. (And apologies if my comment offended anyone at all, it was purely meant as a lighthearted remark)🥰❤️

I love that episode of Bottom, I can never hear the words 'gas man' without thinking of it! 😄

But to get back on topic, this sounds like a really hard thing you're dealing with, OP. It's good that you have an appointment with the GP, hope it proves helpful.

Hard disagree. It gives context to an otherwise rather strange thread and the OP clearly, clearly needs mh support.

Totally agree
The idea that posters are out of order for using advanced search is laughable.

I used to hate people coming into my home when I was renting but the gas check is compulsory. I had the same engineer year on year and he was in and out within 15 minutes, Most trades are self employed so they don't want to hang around.

Portmore · Yesterday 00:14

If you don't allow access they can go to court to forcibly gain access to your home. The gas safety check is compulsory so they will have to do that.
Would it be easier to manage your anxiety for under an hour on a planned date or wait for bailiffs to turn up unannounced to forcibly gain access. You will get charged for that plus the court costs.

Dewdust · Yesterday 00:15

Have a good tidy around the area where the boiler is so that the gas engineer can easily access it.
Make sure you complete this task a couple of days prior to the appointment.
Then let the gas engineer in and allow him to check the boiler.
If it is functioning ok , he/ she will authorise a safety certificate.
If not they will arrange another appointment to fix it.
They will also give you a carbon monoxide meter as well.
And potentially they will check the functioning of the stove if it uses gas.
They require you to light all the rings (if it is a gas cooker) so make sure to clear all the pans off the stove before the gas engineer arrives.
And have a long armed safety lighter handy to light the rings with. Costs about £1.00 to £1.50.
Dont use matches or a lighter if you want to impress them with your level of caution.
If you want to go the extra mile get a fire blanket to hang near the stove and a small fire extinguisher for emergencies.
And nag the company for a specific time slot to reduce your anxiety.

I don't understand why i need a gas lighter and a fire blanket. And fire extinguisher.. why would I light the gas whilst they are here? I don't use my hob. I don't want to communicate with them so i wouldn't have a reason do them things

Missing the point of the thread but why don't you use your hob?!

Wetblanket78 · Yesterday 00:45

I don't like the thought of a strange man coming into my house either. But it's for a gas safety check and it's common not to ignore it. What do you do if you need a repair doing? You could lose your tenancy if you don't allow access.

Wetblanket78 · Yesterday 01:00

JenniferBooth · 04/08/2026 21:43

Quite often the enginneers dont turn up but what ive learned from being a tenant is that the legal requirement only counts when its the tenant breaking it

I've never had an engineer not turn up on the agreed date. The last one I had a few weeks ago. They rang that morning to rearrange because the engineer had a family emergency to deal with. So it was rearranged for a week later. That's shitty management to not let the tenant know.
