Nerdy things men say on holiday

(Maybe it's just mine)
assesses the parasols at the Beach
"I suppose they'd take all these out in winter, wonder where they put them"

later
"wonder what the staff to guest ratio is at this hotel "

later still
"think the sprinklers come on at 7.30 am alternate days"

Does anyone else’s DH or DP seem to obsess about the weather? Multiple times a day. Not just where you are on holiday (checking this first) but anywhere? Nova Scotia, Texas, Little Tooting.

My ex used to trot out phrases for every weather scenario. 'Jack Frost's been' used to give me the ick, every bastard time.

My husband is like this about tide times. He tracks them meticulously on holiday and then when we are at home (we are about 2 hrs drive away from the nearest coast) he will occasionally announce that 'the tide is coming in at Perranporth until 14:28'.

I’d take the nerdy man over my now ex whose favourite thing to do on holidays was bombard the ‘newbies’ with very important information about where we had been / eaten / touts etc oh and swapping the papers around in the morning. When I go on holiday I want to figure things out for myself not be told all about by a random BBB

JudgeJ · 05/08/2026 13:40

We were on a tour of India many years ago and the Portsmouth man, that's how we referred to him for other reasons, made his wife stand at his side as he took photos, long before digital, she had a pad and paper where she had to record all the details of every photo, time, place aperture, f-stop, weather, wind, poor woman.
My late OH's nerdy thing was to sit on the plane ready for departure and he would tell me all that was wrong with this model of plane, especially their crashing history. It didn't seem to appeal to the other surrounding passengers.
I tried to discourage him from watching Aircrash Investigations on TV!

Every time I go away, my husband just makes me what we call "the tech bag" of chargers/plugs and shit.

Obviously, I can do it myself, but I love that he does it for me because I'm a tit with USB cables.

My husband does this too. For Christmas I bought him a posh leather travel case designed for cables etc to replace the carrier bag he normally uses 🤣

iCod · 09/08/2026 08:13

haha, that is a thoughtful gift

Where do they put all the parasols in winter though? That’s a very good question!

They fly south for the winter. Oh no! I'm thinking of pelicans.

Yay, @iCod - your thread is included in this week's Talk Round Up😄

NotVWoolf · 09/08/2026 08:48

On a cruise, I was wondering how many eggs they had on board. And whether or not they have heavier things like potatoes on both sides of the ship for weight distribution (they did on Titanic and took potatoes equally from both sides - the least of their problems in retrospect!).
There’s also stuff I hadn’t thought of until editing an article on maritime insurance - who covers insurance costs of cargo in international waters if the ship sinks. I’ll get my nerd coat…

My husband is weather obsessed he likes to know for his work and where to send teams, but he talks about jet streams and what not, tbh I just glaze over but it is a harmless interest !

Could you ask he where he thinks the councils keep all the Christmas decorations for the towns/cities and all the rides for Winter wonderland? I often wonder this.

Also do towns)cities swap decorations? Or is there a rota? Or do they rent them?

Winter Wonderland rides are most likely rented

Dontcallmescarface · 09/08/2026 09:15

Whenever we stay at a hotel the 1st thing to come out of his mouth when we get to the room is.....brace yourselves...."I wonder how good the wi-fi is here".

I'm here for the random cruise facts! I love knowing random stuff and we're going on a cruise soon 😅
I'm also like your DH, OP. My DH doesn't indulge my curiosities.

Side note, when I wrote 'curiousities' first time, it didn't look right, so I had a Google. I was sure it had the second 'u' in it but apparently it's a common mistake and it is without the second 'u'. Nerd lesson for today learnt!

Not sure it’s just a man things we are just back from holiday and although I didn’t say them out loud I was wondering lots in my mind.

wonder how many bottles of water are used by all these guests every day? (All Inc and there was fridges dotted around with bottles to help yourself to)

wonder how many glasses/cups they have at the hotel?

all things I really don’t need to know but I thought about them non the less 😂

This one would upset me, with people using plastic bottles without a second thought. Glasses and a cooler, surely, would be so much better for the environment?

I'd be the one suggesting that to the hotel management...!

You're all safe though, I have never been on an all-inclusive holiday and can't imagine I ever will having happily done 43 years without

ADarknessOfDragons · 09/08/2026 11:02

I was wondering this week about how the rotas for the bin lorries work. It seems so complicated, with even our village having some people with different colour bins out and that blew my mind, as I'd always assumed that it was grey bin/paper and card bin/ plastic glass and cans bin for everyone on the same day until my hairdresser, who lives at the other side of the (pretty big now) village told me hers were different bins going out to mine. Had to recheck my chart to make sure I hadnt messed up!

Why is it done like this? Why does one crew not do one village? It can't be that one village fills an entire truck?! Doesn't this make rotas unnecessarily complicated?

And once a few years ago I had forgotten to put the bin out in tine and was gutted and working out how to sort the rubbish... at the shop at the end of the road with my primary aged son. There was a bin lorry there. He said, just ask them to go and get it Mum. I did not- too embarrassed- but he did, and they were so kind to him. They had to radio for permission to drive approx 100m , but got it and collected my bin. This still warms my heart, especially when this son is being particularly teenager-y now.

topcat2014 · 09/08/2026 11:04

This is why I like programs like a new life in the sun. People go on holiday once to Cyprus and think they could go back there and open a cafe etc.

Lomonald · 09/08/2026 11:09

@ADarknessOfDragons my Dd lives a few streets away from me we have same bin day but different bins, the reason our council give is, because it.is to do with the amount of rubbish they have to process do they are dumping different different lorries at different parts of the tip so there isn't back log.

It doesn't make sense to me though but that is the reason they give.

Thiscantgoonlikethis · 09/08/2026 11:16

I think we are all curious about different things. Mine interest is people. My stepdad’s is how things work etc. So we come away and I’ll say ‘I think that girl who works on the slushie stand has a crush on the guy who works on the dodgems as she keeps coming over and checking when his lunch break is and they had a little joke over their walkie talkies’ and he will not listen to that and start talking to me about cogs and pistons, which I will listen to but not understand. I always spend holidays abroad almost rigid with fear about being a stereotypical Brit abroad and being rude or ignorant. So I sit watching local people most of the time.

@maxslice you could get your DH a weather map. It’s live. DH got me one and put it on the wall. So good !

and lucky @Poppingby for seeing the parasols coming out of a cave ! I love that! I wonder how many years they have been doing that, based on the fact that Italy has had tourists for about 1000 years

I discovered today that whenever we go abroad on holiday my DH looks up the details of the system for car number plates in that country. This happened because we have a visitor from another country who asked him what the letters and numbers on British car number plates mean. He doesn't tell me because he knows I'd glaze over.

noodlezoodle · 09/08/2026 20:01

I'm another person who's really interested in how things work. I love a 'behind the scenes' documentary, the one about the Savoy was fascinating.

I take photo of where we park in a big airport car park what row we're in and then feel very smug about that while he panics about it

I did that at Center Parcs. We still wandered around for far too long, looking for AE.

DH and I once parked at an Outlet Village, came back and could not find the car at all - we must have walked all round this large car park five times looking for it.

I was on the verge of wondering who we could possibly call to take us back home as our car had apparently been stolen when the penny dropped that there was a near-identical car park next to the one we were in - we had been looking in the wrong car park.😆
