(Maybe it's just mine)
assesses the parasols at the Beach
"I suppose they'd take all these out in winter, wonder where they put them"

later
"wonder what the staff to guest ratio is at this hotel "

later still
"think the sprinklers come on at 7.30 am alternate days"

Where do they put all the parasols in winter though? That’s a very good question!

Aww. I'll tell him that it was only his wicked wife laughing at his ponderings

I take photo of where we park in a big airport car park what row we're in and then feel very smug about that while he panics about it

I always think about a friend of mine who, when they are facing a queue say at an airport or somewhere, his catchphrase is "choose by the demographic not the length" (of the queue )

Edited

I definitely do this at the supermarket.
I look at who is on the till, the demographic and the basket contents. It makes a massive difference!

I 100% do that. It saves that "oh shit, where's the car?" moment

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 03/08/2026 10:35

Eugh...my libido just nosedived.

"Would you like a multi-plug adaptor for your side of the bed? I've brought one for each of us and a spare one."

You made me think of my DF, who said things like that all the time! I miss him, and I love when people think about things around them!

I just came on to say the same about my late DF. I loved the fact that he was so curious about the world right til the end. ❤️

iCod · 03/08/2026 10:55

Every time I go away, my husband just makes me what we call "the tech bag" of chargers/plugs and shit.

Obviously, I can do it myself, but I love that he does it for me because I'm a tit with USB cables.

Good q @Lomonald
I think it's the nature of what I would think about, I might wonder about whether someone was going out with her coworker or less kind of "structural" stuff

Maybe then you are the anti-nerd or polar opposite. Aka chav.

I choose by the look of the person at the end of the queue e g.at the supermarket I will try to get in the line with a young guy working the checkout - far less likely to be chatting away to the customers.
I want focussed on the job - get the line moving!
😂

iCod · 03/08/2026 11:08

A line with kids is never a good choice

This is one of the most endearing mumsnet threads in ages.

Definitely gonna judge lines by the demographics in future.

I apologise for my ingrained sexism. Maybe I've blurred the line between nerd and man 😃😃

Where do they put all the parasols in winter though? That’s a very good question!

A) the closed cafe
B) a shed round the back

Would be my guesses

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 03/08/2026 11:55

I might be able to get an answer to this ... left a message for a lovely chap I know online who has a beach resort on Crete, asking him what he does with the sun parasols in winter.

I will report back forthwith! (And probably have to explain about Mumnsnet)

Will I win Lady Nerd of the Week Award?

It's the same as picking a queue in a cash and carry or big supermarket, are there a lot of fully loaded trolleys, do they have lots of duplicate items that won't all need scanning, does it look like they have more than one person's shop so they have to split it up at the till it's not just about four ahead in one queue and six in another. I still always pick the wrong one though!

In railway stations in Eastern European countries, never choose the ticket office queue with the older woman behind the counter, unless you have balls of steel and can speak fluent Romanian/ Bulgarian. They did their customer service training under Communism, and if they speak a second language it will be Russian.

A younger person will be both far more likely to speak English and far less likely to just walk off because they can't be bothered with you 😆

TheCurious0range · 03/08/2026 12:05

No these are random musings, nerdy is I wonder if there is a niche dungeons and dragons/table top gaming scene on this greek island, there is and I've looked up an independent shop i'd like to go into and talk to nerdy greek men about our mutual hobbies and then buy some limited edition gaming dice. Ask me how I know 😂

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 03/08/2026 12:14

Answer: [he gave me a very full answer, but im just putting the beach resort bit down. But apparently in Greece people actually train vines over a balcony or gazebo to provide shade - so lovely! And ordinary families store portable ones in the garage or shed)

But for beach resorts:
A good parasol kit is usually stored in the car storage space, and probably left there throughiut the year. If not, its stored in the house garage or storage room, on a designated “camping / summer stuff” shelf or corner.
Bigger and heavier umbrellas are typically avoided and are mostly used by resorts and beach bars.
Some are fixed into the ground, have metal skeleton and bamboo shading, and are left on location throughout the year, others are set ONCE at the beginning of the summer season and are dismantled and stored in the resort / beach bar closing only.

So there you go, @iCod , you can answer your husband's first question at least thanks to the power of mumsnet and a very nice beach person / leather worker in Greece

Oh dear I think i am the family nerd. I tend to say things I'm pondering out loud without realising. On one holiday I spent some time staring at the roof of the hotel from my sunbed. There seemed to be a third, smaller storey but the lift and stairs didn't go up another floor. I wondered if these were staff bedrooms with a hidden staircase.

Then I noticed a ladder and pondered further aloud.

Then realised eventually that this was actually a covered roof for air con plant/ventilation. I was delighted to work it out. My family humoured me by nodding along to my nerdy comments.

My husband makes grumpy rather than nerdy observations. At one hotel he was asked by the receptionist if there was anything he needed to make the stay more enjoyable. He moaned that the "birds tweeted too loudly in the morning". I don't know what he expected her to do about it. Tell the chief bird to turn down the volume perhaps?

ThisBoldFinch · 03/08/2026 12:18

Need to find some topics to waffle about to keep up with the DWs frantic stream of consciousness.

there’s a good mickey Flanagan bit about exactly this

That reminds me of a hotel in India, there seemed to be a hut on the roof and eventually found out there was a young French guy living up there for a few months, much cheaper than the hotel apparently. But it must have been incredibly hot up there.

Lol, I have a photo of our fully packed boot, saved in my favourites, that we are to refer to each time we need to pack up to ensure we get the right bags in the most efficient places. I laugh, but i concede it's helpful at 2am, after a long flight, in the airport car park!

I feel like I need to curtsy to you! Great idea!
